Bengals assessing options at safety with starter Geno Stone sidelined because of injury
Those recent developments gave the Bengals a lot to discuss and work on heading into their second preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Monday night.
Coach Zac Taylor said that the Philadelphia Eagles' success against the Bengals in last week's preseason opener showed the Bengals defensive backs some areas to focus on going forward. Penalties from the Bengals also made a big difference last week, and Taylor wants to see those cleaned up in Washington.
'We were just in a lot of one-on-one positions where we were fingertip away a lot of times,' Taylor said. 'Continue to be competitive, continue to be detailed up on scrimmage. I think overall, operationally, there were some things on offense, defense and special teams that we've we've got to be better at. That had nothing to do with Philly, and that's, that's one of our primary focuses right now as a team, not having a joint practice this week.'
Without Stone in the short term, Tycen Anderson, Daijahn Anthony and PJ Jules have been battling for first-team reps on defense.
Even though the Bengals didn't utilize their safety depth last season, they only added undrafted free agents into that position group. As a result, the backups behind Stone who are now contenders for a first-team role are getting their first real chance to show what they're capable of in a starting opportunity.
Anthony played some backup slot cornerback during the first two weeks last season. But after he committed a key penalty, he lost that role and didn't play much during the rest of his rookie season.
He has received a fresh start in 2025 with a new defensive coordinator, and he has been Stone's primary backup as the second-team free safety.
'Safety is just slowing down for me now,' Anthony said. 'What's changed the most is that Coach Al (Golden) has given us our own freedom. He gives us the tools and played to run. Then, he gives us the opportunity to make those plays and run the show back there. That's the biggest change for me. There's not as much stress with this is exactly what we have to do.'
Anderson, a fifth-round pick in 2022, has played one career defensive snap while establishing himself as the team's top special teamer. He has played in 24 total games, and Anderson has 18 total tackles in the NFL on special teams.
Jules was an undrafted free agent last season who spent 2024 on the Bengals' practice squad. An interception last Sunday during practice with the second team opened some eyes and led to him getting more opportunities.
'I don't care who you are, how you got here, I'll give you the same promise my coach gave me 15 years ago,' safeties coach Jordan Kovacs said. 'The best players will play. Every spot is open. Let's go compete and let's see how good we can get. Because competition is ultimately what's going to make us better players.'
Taylor also didn't rule out the Bengals adding a free-agent option at the safety position.
'That's a group that we're looking to make sure we're deep enough there, so they're gonna continue to get a lot of opportunities,' Taylor said.

Cooper Rush tosses TD pass and pick-6 in return to AT&T Stadium as Ravens beat Cowboys 31-13
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Cooper Rush threw a touchdown pass and a pick-6 in his return to AT&T Stadium, and rookie Tyler Loop kicked five field goals as the Baltimore Ravens beat the Dallas Cowboys 31-13 on Saturday night. D'Ernest Johnson ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Ravens (2-0). Loop — the likely replacement for Justin Tucker, who was released in the offseason after he was accused of inappropriate behavior by massage therapists — connected from 53, 52, 42, 36 and 29 yards while missing from 50. Cornerback Andrew Booth picked off Rush and returned it 40 yards for a TD, and Brandon Aubrey kicked field goals of 47 and 36 yards for the Cowboys (0-2). Rush, who spent the previous seven seasons as Dak Prescott's Dallas backup before signing as a free agent with Baltimore, flipped a 1-yard TD pass while backpedaling to Keith Kirkwood on a fourth-down play early in the second quarter. Rush played the first half, going 20 of 30 for 198 yards with two interceptions. Rush's first pick was a throw behind receiver LaJohntay Wester. Booth grabbed it and raced down the left sideline, avoiding tacklers during the final 10 yards. Joe Milton, looking to assume Rush's role with the Cowboys this season, was 9 of 18 for 122 yards and one interception while playing 3 1/2 quarters. He connected with Jonathan Mingo for 49 yards to set up Aubrey's first field goal. Milton's interception immediately followed one by Dallas' Kemon Hall that deflected off the hands of running back Rasheen Ali. Milton's heave from midfield into the end zone was picked off by safety Reuben Lowrey. The fourth field goal by Loop came on a possession extended by a roughing-the-passer penalty against linebacker Darius Harris. Neither Prescott nor Ravens starting quarterback Lamar Jackson was in uniform. Prescott received a few seconds of screen time on the stadium's enormous videoboard, urging the fans to make noise before the fourth-down Baltimore play that resulted in Rush's TD pass. The Ravens outgained the Cowboys 273 yards to 31 in building an 18-7 halftime lead. They ran 50 plays to the Cowboys' 19 during the first half and totaled 16 first-half first downs to the Cowboys' two. Keyon Martin gave the Ravens a 2-0 lead by sacking Milton in the end zone on the Cowboys' third offensive play on third-and-13 from the 3-yard line. Right guard Tyler Booker, Dallas' first-round draft choice, made his preseason debut. He started and played into the third quarter. Mingo, who led Dallas in receiving yards with the one 49-yard catch, left in the third quarter with a knee injury. In tribute The Cowboys, playing in their first home preseason game, observed a moment of silence before kickoff for the victims of the July 4 flooding in Texas. Stetson Bennett rallies Rams to 23-22 preseason win over Chargers, overcoming D-line interception
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Stetson Bennett rebounded from throwing a fourth-quarter interception to 305-pound defensive tackle TeRah Edwards, hitting Tru Edwards with an 8-yard touchdown pass with 5 seconds left while leading the Los Angeles Rams to a 23-22 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night. Bennett passed for 324 yards and three scores in his second straight sharp preseason performance — even if he failed to anticipate the ball-hawking skill and silky lateral movement of the hulking Edwards, who never had an interception in five seasons split between Northwestern and Illinois. The rookie picked off Bennett's throw, thundered downfield and even threw a head fake before plowing over Bennett and finally tripping at midfield to end his 29-yard return with 6:35 to play, setting off an unsurprisingly unhinged celebration on the Bolts' sideline. But Bennett shook it off with the poise of a two-time national champion and drove the Rams (2-0) downfield in the final seconds. Brennan Presley made an acrobatic 40-yard catch between two defenders with 11 seconds to play, setting up Edwards' winning catch on the next play. Justin Herbert went 2 of 5 for 46 yards while playing the opening series in his first-ever preseason game for the Chargers (2-1), who were the visiting team at the clubs' shared stadium. Luke Grimm returned a punt 66 yards for the Bolts' go-ahead touchdown with 12:36 left. Trey Lance passed for 121 yards, and second-round pick Tre Harris had six catches for 85 yards. Herbert never played in an exhibition game before his first five NFL seasons, but the Chargers' $262.5-million quarterback asked for some limited action in this outing to get some work with the Bolts' revamped offense, which is now missing starting left tackle Rashawn Slater. Herbert's only series was interrupted when receiver Quentin Johnston went down hard and left the field on a cart. Herbert also took a sack two plays before the Chargers kicked a field goal. Raheim Sanders rushed for a 1-yard TD in the third quarter set up by Lance's exceptional 34-yard completion to Harris. Bennett hit Mario Williams for a 38-yard touchdown on the final play of the third, putting an exceptional downfield throw directly in the hands of the former USC receiver. The two-time national champion quarterback at the University of Georgia also threw a 2-yard TD pass to rookie Konata Mumpfield in the first half. Grimm, an undrafted rookie receiver who only returned five punts in five seasons at Kansas, broke through the Rams' coverage unit and got down the Chargers' sideline for a score. Aubrey Pleasant served as the Rams' head coach for the game, with Sean McVay handing the reins to his assistant head coach and passing game coordinator.
