Karnataka govt. withdraws MoS rank to Sahitya Parishat president Mahesh Joshi
The State government has on Saturday withdrawn the Minister of State rank and all the facilities applicable to that rank to Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) president Mahesh Joshi.
Shortly after Mr. Joshi was elected president of the Parishat, the then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Basavaraj Bommai had accorded MoS rank to him. This move was criticised by many writers then. This was the first time a KSP president was given a MoS rank.
Reacting sharply to the government revoking the MoS rank to KSP president, Mr. Joshi said that the Parishat was working as a voice of Kannada and thereby withdrawing this honour to its president was an insult to Kannadigas. 'This will create a problem in the cordial relationship between the KSP and the government,' he added.
He further said he had not asked for a MoS rank to be given, but the government accorded this honour following a letter by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to then Chief Minister Mr. Bommai.

Kamal Haasan's ‘Thug Life' in trouble: Producers move HC as Karnataka film body says movie won't release without apology
Actor Kamal Haasan continues to be in the centre of controversy after his comment on the Kannada language, with pro-Kannada groups announcing a ban on the release of his film 'Thug Life'. Now, a plea has been moved at the Karnataka High Court to allow the movie's screening without any disturbance in Karnataka, as per a report. According to a report by Bar and Bench, co-producer of the film Raajkamal Films International has moved the Karnataka HC, citing concerns regarding the ban on the film's screenings in Karnataka. During a promotional event of Thug Life in Chennai, Kamal Haasan allegedly said that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil', leading to massive uproar among pro-Kannada groups and a ban by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) on the movie. Meanwhile, a Karnataka film organisation has targeted his upcoming film 'Thug Life', saying it won't let the movie release unless the actor provides an public apology. 'People of Karnataka are angry with Kamal Haasan. We have also sent a message to the South Film Chamber. The distributors have decided that if he does not apologise before the release of his film on the 5th, it will not be allowed to release here,' KFCC president M. Narasimhalu was quoted as saying by ANI. Thug Life is directed by Mani Ratnam and stars Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, and Silambarasan TR in the lead roles. In response to the growing backlash, Haasan defended his statement, saying he believes in law and democracy. Calling India a "democratic country," the Thug Life actor maintained that he wouldn't "apologise" to anyone for his actions if he is "not wrong." Speaking to media personnel outside the DMK party headquarters in Chennai on Friday, Haasan said, 'It (India) is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala is genuine. Nobody will doubt it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise; if I'm not, I won't.'

Kamal Haasan moves Karnataka HC after KFCC bans release of movie Thug Life
Veteran actor and politician Kamal Hasaan on Monday moved the Karnataka high court seeking the release of his upcoming film 'Thug Life', which has been stalled by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce over his controversial remarks on the Kannada language. As per news agency ANI, the actor filed this petition through the CEO of his company - Rajkamal Film International. The actor has appealed to the court to restrain the government, police department and Film Chamber of Commerce from stopping the screening of the movie. Furthermore, he has also petitioned for proper security for the movie screening. Kamal Haasan stoked controversy after he, during a promotional event for Thug Life last month, said that "Kannada was born out of Tamil." The remark triggered massive row in Karnataka with politicians and film associations slamming the actor. Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra called on Haasan to issue an apology. "One must love their mother tongue, but flaunting arrogance in its name is a mark of cultural bankruptcy. Especially for artists, it is essential to possess the ethos of respecting every language," the BJP leader wrote on X. The actor later clarified his remark amid the row and stated that politicians are not "qualified to talk about language." "I think what I said was said out of love and with a lot of historians who taught me language, history and that I didn't mean anything. Politicians are not qualified to talk about language. They don't have the education enough to talk about it. That includes me. So let's leave all these very in depth discussions to historians, archaeologists and language experts. We are a family and so are the languages," he was quoted as saying by PTI.
