Lennon Miller: It's easy to brush off speculation, but I don't know where my future lies

Daily Record08-05-2025
The Motherwell midfielder has been linked with a big-money move this summer
Motherwell star Lennon Miller says it's easy to brush off constant transfer speculation – because he's now used to it.
The 18-year-old midfielder was last weekend crowned PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year, and he's also up for the Scottish Football Writers' Association gong, following a solid season that has seen him linked to a summer move at various clubs.

Miller, who is in the final 12 months of his Motherwell contract, knows there could be a life-changing transfer on the horizon for him, with clubs in Germany, Italy and Belgium keen to land him.

But Miller says playing football is his only goal at the moment, and the Wishaw youngster has always said dad Lee keeps him grounded.
Miller, who has seen Scots like Lewis Ferguson, Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour flourish abroad, said: 'You look at these players who have gone abroad and tried a different challenge. Most of them have worked.
'I don't mind where I am, as long as I'm playing football. That's what I want to do – I want to play football.
'[Speculation] becomes easier once you've had it. It's easier just to put it to one side once you've had it for two years now. It's easy enough.
'It's nice to have these teams linked with you, but I try to put it to one side and focus on every day.

'My dad has been brilliant. I tend to speak to him quite a lot about even game stuff. I talk to him about everything. He helps with most stuff.
'My dad is a massive part of what I do. It will ultimately be my decision, but I will definitely look for advice.
'He has been brilliant, my whole family have been brilliant with it.'

When asked if Miller thinks he will be at Fir Park next season, the midfielder said: 'Honestly, I don't know. I don't even ask my agent, I just let him deal with it.
'We have three games left this season, that's my main focus, to pick up points for Motherwell, and see where that takes us.
'I'd just like to thank everybody at Motherwell that has helped me in any way.
'Have I progressed quicker than I imagined? Yeah, I think so. You dream of playing at 16 and securing your name on the team-sheet every week, and to be doing that now at 18 is nice.
'I try to get better every day.'

10 Scots who took English Premier League by storm – including Champions League winners and surprise inclusion

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE new English Premier League season kicks off on Friday night with reigning champions Liverpool hosting Bournemouth at Anfield. Scotland captain Andy Robertson is likely to start on the Reds' bench after Arne Slot's £40million summer swoop for Cherries left-back Milos Kerkez. Here SunSport Online looks at ten Scots who have made a massive impact on the top flight south of the border. DUNCAN FERGUSON Big Dunc is the top-scoring Scot in EPL history with 68 goals from 269 games with Everton and Newcastle. The Scotland striker initially moved to Goodison in a double loan deal from Rangers with Ian Durrant in October 1994. He famously netted a hat-trick against Bolton three years later - the first time a trio of headers had been scored in a Premier League match. The one-time Dundee United kid was sold to Newcastle in 1998 without the knowledge of then Toffees boss Walter Smith. But he returned to Everton in 2000 and made such an impact that he was honoured with a testimonial match 15 years later. DARREN FLETCHER Manchester United great Fletcher holds the record for most appearances by a Scot in the EPL era - 314. Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson as a schoolboy from Dalkeith, the midfielder won five Premier League titles under the legendary Scots boss. In 2005, he scored the only goal at Old Trafford to end Chelsea's 40-game unbeaten run in the league. Darren Fletcher's Son Jack Follows Dad's Footsteps Fletcher, who won 80 caps for Scotland, ended his EPL career with spells at West Brom and Stoke City. He scored 23 goals in his Premier League career and won every domestic honour with United as well as the Champions League in 2008. KEVIN GALLACHER Strike star Gallacher was a title winner under Sir Kenny Dalglish in Blackburn Rovers' historic triumph in 1994/95. The former Dundee United ace made just one appearance during the campaign as he twice broke a leg. But he scored in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace and was handed a title medal for his role in the success. Gallacher, a Scotland hero under Craig Brown, is second behind Ferguson on the list of all-time Scots scorers with 56 goals from 198 games. He also played for Coventry and Newcastle in the EPL and scored nine goals in 53 international appearances. He helped Rovers into the top flight and was a key figure in their only title win under benefactor Jack Walker before his 1998 switch to Rangers. Hendry played 218 EPL games, including brief spells at Coventry and Bolton, and scored eight goals. He led Scotland at the World Cup of France 98 after injury ruled out Gary McAllister, and won 51 caps in all. GARY McALLISTER No other Scot has played more Premier League minutes than the 27,199 managed by McAllister in his career. He won the old First Division title with Leeds United - alongside pal Gordon Strachan - in the final season before the EPL came into existence. The former Scotland captain played 325 games and scored 49 goals for Leeds, Liverpool and Coventry. The former Motherwell kid won every domestic honour with the Reds, apart from the Premier League title. He also netted five times in 57 Scotland caps, starring at Euro 92 - where he scored against the CIS - and Euro 96. JAMES McARTHUR A graduate of Hamilton Accies' academy, midfielder McArthur became a Premier League hero with Wigan and Crystal Palace. He stands third on the list of Scots appearance makers - behind Ferguson and McAllister - with 323 games. Capped 32 times by Scotland, the Glasgow-born star was an FA Cup winner with Wigan and runner-up at Wembley with Palace. He moved from Wigan to Palace for £7m in 2014 and was later joined at Selhurst Park by ex-Accies team-mate James McCarthy. McArthur hung up his boots two years ago at the age of 35 but is rightly recognised as one of the most prominent Scots of the EPL era. BRIAN McCLAIR Sir Alex Ferguson's first signing for Manchester United, McClair is a four-time Premier League title winner. Man Utd legend looks like a new man with bushy beard and grey hair He was a key figure for the Red Devils as they captured four championships out of five between 1992/93 and 1996/97. McClair made 162 EPL appearances and contributed 18 goals and 13 assists in an era of domination for Fergie and Co. The former Motherwell and Celtic attacker won ten other trophies with United and later took on a backroom role at the club. He also scored twice in 30 caps for Scotland, including one against the CIS at Euro 92 - the same game in which McAllister scored. JOHN McGINN Aston Villa captain McGinn is one of just two current players on this list of great Scots in the Premier League. Villa were still in the Championship when they signed him from Hibs in 2018 - but he's played a key role in hauling them to the top end of the EPL. The 30-year-old Scotland midfielder has made 203 appearances, with 17 goals and 23 assists, ahead of Saturday's lunchtime kick off against Newcastle at Villa Park. He helped Villa into last season's Champions League - and a clash with boyhood heroes Celtic - after a sparkling season. The former St Mirren kid is also fifth on the all-time list of Scotland scorers with 20 goals from his 77 caps. ANDY ROBERTSON A two-time title winner with Liverpool, the Scotland captain began his EPL career with Hull City in 2014. 3 Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold with the Premier League trophy Credit: Alamy The former Queen's Park and Dundee United left-back has captured championship medals under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. Now 31, the 84-cap star has played 308 games and scored 11 goals ahead of Friday night's Anfield curtain-raiser against Bournemouth. He's also won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Community Shield, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup with the Reds. He needs 34 more EPL appearances to eclipse former Scotland team-mate Fletcher at the top of the all-time list. PAUL TELFER This may surprise a few folk - but former Celtic and Scotland right-back Telfer is fourth on the all-time EPL list of Scots with 319 appearances. Telfer had six seasons with Coventry and four with Southampton in the top flight before a reunion with former boss Gordon Strachan at Celtic. The Edinburgh-born defender, who won a single Scotland cap against France in 2000, was a virtual ever-present during a decade in England's top flight. No other Scottish defender has played more EPL games than Telfer, who also scored seven goals in the league. He heads the likes of James Morrison (311), Phil Bardsley (303), Dominic Matteo (276) and Neil Sullivan (247) in the top ten. Heather McEwan slotted to earn Scotland women a draw with top-ten ranked Spain in the EuroHockey Championships, Pool B. McEwan, who plays in Belgium, bravely found the net after a driving run down the left and into the circle from Surbiton player Ellie Mackenzie who sent a perfectly weighted ball in the direction of the South African-born forward to level at 1-1. Heather McEwan The Wimbledon star was a major player in the 3-0 opening day defeat by England, and the Great Britain squad member, who was a travelling reserve for the Paris Olympics, could again be an ace card as Scotland square-up to Belgium on Wednesday in Monchengladbach. Chris Duncan, the side's head coach, said the squad showed great character and grit to respond positively after the England defeat and he was particularly pleased with their determination to fight back after losing an early goal to the highly-ranked Spanish combine. Everybody, he said, played their part and athletes stepped-up, particularly in the dying minutes of the final quarter when Edinburgh-raised, Great Britain defender, Amy Costello, was on a yellow card. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Katie Birch (Wimbledon) and club-mate Buchanan were among the players who kept their cool alongside Dundee-born Charlotte Watson, a Paris Olympian, and, despite the intense pressure, but this, stressed the coach, was a team effort and he added: 'We are still in this tournament, fighting for a semi-final place.' Duncan's side, may have slipped to No 16 in the world rankings, but they are competing at a high level and took the game to the Spanish side, ranked No 7 in the world, one place ahead of England, in the opening quarter. He added: 'They should be proud of their performance against Spain, and against England. I feel we have played well in both games and the England result did not reflect the performance. We created chances (against England) and they cleared one off the goal line. We made two errors which were punished. 'However, we showed great character and grit to come back against Spain and we played some good hockey defensively and with the ball. We got the job done.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scotland pressed early in the game, Jen Eadie (Clydesdale Western) coming close with a driving run and shot. Ruth Blaikie (The University of Edinburgh) then tried to feed Fiona Burnet in the circle, but the Watsonians player was inches from connecting with the pass. Spain struck against the run of play, their captain, Lucia Jiminez beating 23-year-old Buchanan to break the deadlock after 12 minutes. Scotland did not buckle and Mackenzie and Costello, her Surbiton club-mate, were pivotal in keeping the scoreline the same despite pressure from the opposition along with goalkeeper Buchanan. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Tartan Hearts were in the contest and they pressed hard in search of a breakthrough. It arrived four minutes from the final whistle when Mackenzie kept her cool to find Durban-born McEwan (Royal Victory, Belgium), who qualifies because of her Oban-raised father. She made no mistake, deflecting the ball home. Now come Belgium, ranked in the world's top three, in their final Pool B game on Wednesday (BST 11.15am) before the cross-over ties which determine the final placings.
