We won't splash Lennon Miller cash, but it will stabilise the club, says Motherwell boss
Jens Berthel Askou says the club record fee from Udinese will be used sensibly Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou says he won't be splashing the cash from Lennon Miller's £5m move to Udinese – but it will help to stabilise the club. Miller, 18, moved to the Serie A club for a club record fee, on a five-year deal, and while Askou wants to strengthen his squad, he's not going to splash money about carelessly. On Miller's life-changing move, Askou said: 'The big headline is it's a fantastic deal for Motherwell FC and everybody who's involved in the club, the supporters, everyone who has played a part in his development, his pathway. 'Obviously for Motherwell in the future it will also benefit us, and it's a fantastic deal for Lennon himself, and also for Scottish football to send one of its most promising talents into a very good and competitive league. 'We are really happy on his behalf, and on everyone's behalf, who is a part of Motherwell FC. 'In the short time I've been here I've seen a very intelligent football player, who is also very composed and relaxed and good at dealing with pressure, and I expect him to do really well there. 'Coming to Italy there is a bit of adapting to the language, the style and a higher level, but I think he will adapt really well. 'I'm excited on his behalf, and I think we should be, all of us, and it's going to be really interesting to see him grow. He's still very young. 'I'm quite convinced that he's got a very bright future ahead of him at Udinese, and he will be able to take the next step as a football player.' Askou says there will be aspects of the Fir Park club that will be strengthened with the cash, and they'll future-proof themselves. He said: 'We still have a few things to do [with the squad], we've been open about that, but we're not going to name specific positions. 'We're doing our best and things are moving on in the right direction, and we're still working within our framework and budget, and driving this club forward, sustainably. 'When you make a big deal like we've done now, it's not going to be splashed, it's going to be benefiting Motherwell, a little bit short-term, but in general on the long-term, so we can produce the next Lennon Miller in the future and we'll be able to be more competitive as a club and keep progressing. 'We're not going to risk the club and the balance within the club, and the structure, because we've been in the Premiership for many years and we want to keep doing what we do. 'But we've taken some steps to modernising the club, within the framework that we have, and we're not going to risk that by over-spending and taking quick decisions. 'We're doing things at the right speed and tempo, so that we have a good and healthy club in months, years and decades to come. 'I'm not going to expose how we approach that [transfer fee], but there's a good and healthy plan, which I back up completely, how to get the best out of the possibilities it has given the club, both in short and long-term. 'We're not going to change our approach to the way we drive the football club, from a financial point of view, but it gives us some stability and opportunities to maybe think of some of the long-term investments we know we need to do, and maybe speed that process up a little bit, which is very positive.'

‘I'm sorry' – Brendan Rodgers reveals exactly why he didn't wear Celtic tie against Aberdeen amid fan conspiracy theory
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE sight of Brendan Rodgers not wearing a tie in the dugout at Pittodrie was enough to send some Celtic fans into a frenzy. A frenzy, that is, leading to the conclusion that the lack of tie was Rodgers sending some kind of coded MESSAGE to club chiefs. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 4 Brendan Rodgers stepped off the bus at Pittodrie without a tie Credit: PA 4 The tie was still absent as the Celtic boss arrived in the dugout Credit: Kenny Ramsay 4 He's usually always seen in a full suit and tie Credit: PA The Celtic boss is known for being particularly well turned out in the dugout. He's rarely seen without a full suit, shirt, club tie and smart shoes. While he was still well-dressed as the Hoops faced Aberdeen last Sunday, the lack of tie was a glaring omission for many Celts supporters. And several fans feared Rodgers was sending a message to the board, sharing their thoughts on social media. As the game against Aberdeen took place, one fan said: "Perhaps it's me looking too much into it but Rodgers not wearing the club tie might be saying something." Another worried supporter added: "I think the Rodgers tie-less look today was a message. Didn't want to be in the board uniform." A third said: "Brendan Rodgers isn't wearing a tie with his suit and I feel like it's a sign of something." Then on the Monday night following the 2-0 win over the Dons, a fan dialled-in to Clyde Superscoreboard with the same sentiment. The caller described Rodgers' lack of tie as "alarming for every Celtic fan" and that it said to him that the manager wouldn't be there next season. Rodgers' contract at Celtic Park is up at the end of this season and he revealed earlier this month that no new deal is currently on the table. Celtic hero Neil Lennon spotted singing and dancing to Oasis song at Murrayfield gig The Hoops boss has also voiced his frustrations at this summer's transfer activity, repeating calls for his squad to be strengthened further. A couple of weeks ago, Rodgers said: "It's my responsibility to convince the club that we really need them and clearly I'm not doing that job as well as maybe what I can." So COULD the lack of tie be a message to the Celtic hierarchy after all? Well, to put it simply, no. Rodgers himself was quizzed on the conspiracy talk as he addressed the media ahead of Friday night's Premier Sports Cup clash with Falkirk. And putting any suggestion of coded messages to bed, he insisted the only message he was sending was that he was too WARM! Acknowledging he was aware of the furore, Rodgers replied: "It's unbelievable. Someone has told me this here. "I'm supposedly sending messages - it's unbelievable! "I'm basically like everyone else. See when it's really hot, you either take off your jacket or your tie. "See when it's really cold, you wear a jumper. "I remember last year I wore a jumper and people said 'he's sending a message.' "What message? It's bloody freezing! "I had a jumper on and my big coat and it was up to there and I'm fine. "There's two grounds I've realised in my career that are absolutely boiling. 4 "If you get it at the time and the sun's hitting your dugout - Pittodrie and Preston, Deepdale. "I went there once before and I got absolutely roasted on the day and Pittodrie is the same, the sun hits you. "So I thought 'I better take off my jacket or take off my tie.' "So I took my tie off, I don't know what message that is, I'm just warm!" Rodgers then apologised - but only for people wasting their time on being WRONG. He then revealed it's ALWAYS his intention to wear a suit and tie - a tradition that goes all the way back to his younger days. Rodgers continued: "I'm sorry if I've wasted people's energy and time on being wrong but I was just a wee bit hot and that's why I was no tie?" Asked if the tie would be back tomorrow night, he continued: "I'll look at the temperature and it should be back on tomorrow. "I've always been the shirt and tie man, my father always brought me up to be respectful. "When he sent me on trial to clubs when I was younger, at 13 or 14, he'd send me away with a shirt and tie. "From that, I've always represented him in respect level. "So it's always shirt and tie where it can be." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Edinburgh braced as ultras who 'injured own manager' set to descend for Hibs clash
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Hibs secured a huge 2-0 away win last week as they bid to secure qualification for the Europa Conference League. David Gray's side put in a clinical performance against Serbian outfit FK Partizan, also known as Partizan Belgrade, with a brace from Martin Boyle giving the away side a considerable advantage heading into Thursday's second leg. If the Easter Road side progress they will face wither AEK Larnaca or Legia Warsaw in the next qualifying round on August 21. Hibs can be certain of one thing heading into Thursday's match, however, and that is Partizan fans making their presence known in the capital, with the team's ultras making the headlines on numerous occasions back home. Head coach Aleksandar Stanojevic was left with facial injuries after fans broke into the dressing room following a 4-0 defeat to city rivals Red Star Belgrade in September 2024. The manager appeared with a plaster on his head and nose during a post-match press conference as he confirmed: "disgruntled fans broke the glass, it was unpleasant." A group known as Grobari are one of the two major supporters groups in Serbia and are considered to be among the loudest groups of ultras in European football. In the 2007-2008 UEFA Cup Partizan Belgrade were disqualified from further competition due to football hooliganism against Zrinjski Mostar. Grobari travelled in numbers to Mostar where they fought with the police and Zrinjski fans. Some Hibs fans have already had a run-in with the opposition's ultras as a video shared on social media last week, during the first leg, appeared to show a handful of Partizan fans charging past stewards to confront away fans. Partizan fans then stole a flag hanging over the railing of the away section. In November 2013 footage filmed during another clash between Partizan and Red Star saw flares fired towards both sets of supporters before a huge blaze broke out in the stands and play was halted. Hibs will take on FK Partizan at Easter Road on Thursday night, August 14, with the game kicking off at 8pm. After just three games in the Serbian Superliga, Partizan find themselves level on points with Red Star with both sides having taken the maximum nine points.
