Lynch resigns for City and has key role
Edin Lynch has signed a new contract with Edinburgh City and the Glasgow-born defender has a new role. The 24-year-old player will take over captaincy of the club from 36-year-old, Edinburgh-born midfielder, Jon Robertson. Last season was Lynch's first with the Meadowbank-based outfit after being part of Stenhousemuir's title winning side in season 2023/24. City have also said that goalkeeper Mark Weir has signed a new contract with the club who finished third Scottish League Two last term, collecting 56 points from their 36 games, nine behind second-placed East Fife and ten adrift of champions, Peterhead. They failed to earn promotion to Scottish League One through the play-offs, winning 1-0 at home to East Fife in the semi-final, first-leg in the Capital but losing 3-0 at Methil in the second-leg. Season tickets are now available and the club have confirmed their Premier Sports Cup fixtures. They open on Saturday, July 12 (3pm) against Partick Thistle in Edinburgh, then they travel to Queen of the South on Tuesday, July 15 (7.45pm). Their next outing is at home to Stranraer on Saturday, July 19 (3pm) and they then play Ross County, recently relegated from the William Hill Premiership, in Dingwall on Tuesday, July 22 (7.45pm). Annan Athletic relegated after play-off final defeat
Annan Athletic have been relegated after defeat in the Scottish League One play-off final. A 1-1 draw in the second leg against East Fife meant a 4-3 aggregate loss - and a return to League Two. Wullie Gibson's side, trailing 3-2 from the first leg, levelled the final in the early stages at Galabank on Friday evening when Tommy Goss scored. Ex-Carlisle United midfielder Josh Dixon was millimetres away from an Annan second when he hit the crossbar. But East Fife regained the aggregate lead when Adam Laaref made it 1-1 on the night before half-time. 🎉 Tha East Fife a' dol shuas gu Lìog a h-Aon!@EastFifeFC are going up! Look at what it means 👇 — BBC ALBA (@bbcalba) May 16, 2025 And Dick Campbell's visitors held off Gibson's men after the break to clinch promotion as Annan's two-year stay in the third tier came to an end. A 1,304 crowd packed into Galabank with the majority hoping Annan, who finished ninth in League One, could overturn League Two's second-placed finishers. But afterwards player-boss Gibson, speaking via Annan's official channels, said: "I'm incredibly disappointed. "The play-offs is an extra life and we've not managed to stay up. "We're in the position we're in because we've conceded poor goals all season, and tonight was no different. "I take the responsibility - over the course of the season it's been my team and it's not been good enough. "We now need to do a very good job in terms of recruitment. We'll need to build on a tight budget and try to come back up again. "That will be the desire in the changing room, from the boys, from myself and the staff. "We don't want to be in League Two, and its going to hurt for a long time, but we need to bounce back."

East Fife promoted to Scottish League One by seeing off Annan in play-off final
East Fife secured promotion to Scottish League One after a 1-1 draw at Annan clinched them a 4-3 aggregate win in their two-legged play-off final. Dick Campbell's Fifers, who won the first leg 3-2 on Tuesday night at Bayview Stadium, fell behind on the night to an early opener from Tommy Goss, but Adam Laaref's first-half equaliser proved decisive. Annan, without suspended pair Scott Hooper and Layton Bisland after they were both sent off in the first leg, made a flying start at Galabank as Goss headed home Ryan Muir's cross to put them 1-0 up in the sixth minute. The Fifers restored their aggregate advantage in the 37th minute when Annan goalkeeper Jamie Smith failed to gather a free-kick into the box and Laaref fired the loose ball into the top corner. Laaref struck a post with an angled shot three minutes later, while East Fife goalkeeper Liam McFarlane made several crucial second-half saves and Muir hooked a golden chance for Annan in stoppage time over the crossbar.
