Quebec premier calls new Trump tariff threats on steel and aluminum 'completely unjustified'

Quebec Premier François Legault is calling U.S. President Donald Trump's latest tariff threat on Canadian steel and aluminum producers "completely unjustified." He made the remark in a post on X, after Trump announced his intention to double the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 per cent next Wednesday. "If he goes ahead with this tariff increase, it will harm our economy, as well as the American economy," Legault wrote in French. Legault added the situation was being closely monitored as they await to see the details of the executive order. In the meantime, "assistance programs continue to be available to businesses in need," he said. Both the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) and United Steel Workers Canada condemned the increase in U.S steel tariffs. "We're already in a dire situation with the 25 per cent tariffs imposed on us in March, so an additional 25 per cent will be catastrophic for our industry," François Desmarais, the CSPA's vice-president of trade and industry affairs, told CBC in an interview. Meg Gingrich, assistant to the national director for the United Steel Workers, agreed, saying the move could deliver a "potentially devastating blow" to the industry. Gingrich and Desmarais pointed to hundreds of layoffs across the country as a result of the current tariffs and Desmarais noted a "massive drop" in steel shipments to the United States. Desmarais said in April there were 30 per cent less shipments compared to the same time last year. "You have to keep in mind that over 50 per cent of Canadian steel production is sold in the United States," he said, adding he worries Canadian producers will be shut out of the market if Trump makes good on the proposed increase. Both organizations are calling on the federal government to take strong action and reinstate counter tariffs immediately, but some are hoping for a more measured response. WATCH | International trade lawyer weighs in on Trump's threat: Trump says he will double tariffs on steel and aluminum 2 days ago Duration 1:29:02 U.S. President Donald Trump said he will double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 per cent next Wednesday. Hanomansing Tonight spoke with an international trade lawyer about the announcement. Response needs to be targeted "We understand that we need to have a political answer to the situation," said Julie White, CEO of the Manufacturiers et Exportateurs du Québec — a business association whose mission is to promote the growth of the Quebec manufacturing sector. She said, however, that any response needs to be targeted and take into account how it will impact different sectors. White explained that producers of steel and aluminum are in a different situation than the manufacturers who transform those products. "If it's inputs on the production that are affected by counter tariffs it's going to up the prices of production a lot and there's going to be an impact on businesses in their costs," she said. "Are they going to be able to keep producing? Are they going to be able to keep all their workers in place?" White says the uncertainty from the threat of tariffs has hurt manufacturers and exporters in Quebec more than the tariffs themselves, with those taxes leading to lost contracts and investments being delayed. "At the beginning a lot of people were afraid of the situation, but we've seen that even if Donald Trump has said a lot of things, not all of them happen," she said, adding it's important to take a step back, think longer term and try to find new opportunities. As an example, White said, the federal government is set to increase its defence spending, so "how are some manufacturers going to shift their production to make sure they respond to those new contracts?" Counter tariffs not the only solution Both Desmarais and Gingrich agree that counter tariffs are only part of the solution. Addressing issues surrounding the sectors' competitiveness and ensuring the integrity of the market in Canada are paramount. That, according to Gingrich, would require stemming the flow of unfairly traded steel and aluminum into our borders and could perhaps be achieved with a surtax on countries that don't play by the same rules. She explained how some steel producers affected by American tariffs are looking for new markets to unload their production. There's a risk of the Canadian market being flooded and undercut by products that are made for cheap abroad through practices such as overproduction, poor labour and environmental standards as well as currency manipulation, Gingrich said. Desmarais added another solution to boost the sector would be for governments to require domestic products be used for infrastructure projects.

Should You Buy Ford While It's Below $11?

It might come as a surprise to investors, but Ford (NYSE: F) is outperforming the broader market this year. As of May 28, the stock is up nearly 3% in 2025. This small win doesn't take away from the fact that the company has a poor track record over an extended period of time. Nonetheless, it's best to view the situation with a fresh perspective. Ford shares currently trade below $11. Does this setup mean that you should be a buyer right now? Let's look at the most important factors about the business and the stock that long-term investors should be paying attention to. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Economic moat In my view, one of the first things investors should try to identify when looking at a potential stock to buy is the presence of an economic moat. Capitalism creates fierce competition. And the companies that have built up durable competitive strengths are able to outperform rivals in the long run. Even the legendary investor Warren Buffett would likely agree. Turning the attention back to Ford, it's an easy argument to make by saying the company does not have an economic moat. A quantitative representation can be had by looking at the return on invested capital (ROIC) of 8.6%. It's best to own businesses that generate a figure well over 20%, as this indicates a huge spread between ROIC and the weighted average cost of capital. Producing a much higher ROIC showcases the ability to create real economic value, as opposed to destroying it. Understanding the industry backdrop will also give investors pause. The market is incredibly competitive, with domestic and foreign auto makers vying for consumer wallet share. The rise of electric vehicle (EV) enterprises only complicates the landscape. Some consumers might have an affinity to a brand, but other factors like price, features, and reliability can matter more in certain circumstances. It's hard to gain any sustainable advantage over rivals. Show me the growth Ford has been around for over a century, a nod to its staying power. However, this also reveals just how mature the auto industry is. Yes, there has been some innovation in recent decades with the introduction of hybrid cars and EVs. But the overall industry's growth isn't anything to write home about. In 2024, Ford brought in $185 billion in total revenue. This is just 28% higher than exactly one decade earlier in 2014. There were 17.8 million cars sold in the U.S. in April on a seasonally adjusted annual rate. That number is the same as exactly 25 years ago. The takeaway is that investors shouldn't expect Ford to miraculously start to supercharge its unit growth in the years ahead, unless, of course, there is a surge in the global population that warrants the need for more vehicles being on the road. I wouldn't bet on it. There is one bright spot under Food's hood, though, which is the Pro segment. This commercial-focused operation put up 15% sales growth in 2024, with an operating margin of 13.5%. Management touts its ability to bring in recurring revenue for the business. Ford stock is cheap At under $11 per share, investors might be drawn to the current valuation. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 8.1, which is a massive discount to the overall market. Consequently, investors can get a dividend yield of 5.9%. As enticing as that sounds, Ford typically won't command a multiple that's in line with the market just because of how capital-intensive and cyclical the company's operations are. And that dividend payout could take a hit in an economic downturn if revenue and earnings plummet. Ford is a stock that long-term investors should avoid. Prediction: This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Company Will Be Worth Over $5 Trillion in 10 Years

Shares of Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) have been impacted by several factors, including increasing macroeconomic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, ongoing tariff wars, export controls, and rising competition from Chinese companies in the past few months. However, the recent earnings performance -- including its recent impressive result in the fiscal first quarter of 2026 -- demonstrates why investors should not let the short-term noise distract them from the company's long-term growth prospects. Nvidia's first quarter fiscal 2026 earnings performance (ending April 27) validates its position as the clear leader in the artificial intelligence (AI) -powered hardware, software, and infrastructure services market. Revenue soared 69% year-over-year to $44.1 billion, while data center revenue surged 73% year-over-year to $39.1 billion in the first quarter. These tailwinds can propel Nvidia's market value to over $5 trillion in the next decade. Leadership in AI hardware Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market, where it still controls a more than 80% share, should remain unchallenged at least for the next few years. The company's latest Grace Blackwell 200 (GB200) graphics processing units (GPUs) enable organizations to run computationally heavy reasoning AI models with 25 times higher performance and at a twentieth of the cost of Hopper H100 chips. The Blackwell ramp-up has been the fastest product launch in Nvidia's history and accounted for nearly 70% of data center compute revenues in the recent quarter. Major hyperscalers are already deploying nearly 72,000 Blackwell GPUs weekly across their data centers and are planning to further ramp output in this quarter. Furthermore, Nvidia is sampling GB300 systems at major cloud service providers and expects production shipments to commence by the end of the second quarter. While these systems have the same architecture, physical footprint, and mechanical and electrical specifications as GB200, they offer 50% more high-bandwidth memory capacity and a 50% increase in inference computing performance. Hence, cloud service providers can transition from GB200 to GB300 systems while benefiting from higher performance Software ecosystem Nvidia's software ecosystem has also become a strong moat, ensuring that customers will find it prohibitively costly to switch to competitors' chips. The company's comprehensive CUDA parallel programming platform is currently used by 5.9 million developers to accelerate GPUs for various general-purpose applications effectively. CUDA is currently used to accelerate all AI models and over 4,400 applications. Subsequently, CUDA helps prevent significant infrastructure investments from becoming obsolete in an exceptionally fast-evolving market. Additionally, the company launched its TensorRT software package for inference (real-time deployment of trained AI models) optimization and the TensorRT-LLM software library to ensure the fast and efficient running of large language models. Strategic partnerships Nvidia partnered with Humain, a newly launched AI company owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, to build AI factories with 18,000 of its latest GB300 Blackwell chips in the first deployment phase. Nvidia is also playing a key role in the Stargate Project, through which OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle have said they plan to invest $500 billion into U.S.-based AI infrastructure over the next four years. These strategic alliances could be significant growth catalysts for Nvidia in the long run. How can Nvidia reach a $5 trillion valuation by 2035? In its fiscal 2025, which ended Jan. 26, the chipmaker's revenues grew by 114% to $130.5 billion. While analysts are projecting lower revenue growth rates for future years, the consensus expectation is still for the company to grow quickly. Nvidia's revenues are forecast to increase by 52.8% and 23.9% in its fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027, respectively. And the company's already off to a good start by recording 69% revenue growth in Q1 of fiscal 2026. In that context, it is reasonable to expect Nvidia to grow at a compound annual rate of nearly 20% over the next decade. If it does, it would wind up with about $808 billion in revenues in its fiscal 2035. Nvidia reported an exceptionally high net income margin of 55.8% in its fiscal 2025. The company has been able to steadily expand its margins in the past couple of years, largely due to its dominance in the AI market. Even if we assume that it will have to accept some margin contraction due to increasing competition and scale, it is reasonable to expect it to produce a net income margin of nearly 27.9% -- its 10-year median margin -- in fiscal 2035. With a top line of $808 billion, that would give it a net income of around $225 billion that year. Nvidia is trading at around 32.6 times forward earnings. Analysts have projected 5-year forward P/E multiple of 23.5x for Nvidia. Assuming this valuation multiple for the next 10 years , the company can reach a market value of $5.29 trillion by 2035. Hence, the company is well positioned to cross the $5 trillion market capitalization, even under conservative expectations. There are reasons to suspect its market value could grow even higher, too -- consider Nvidia's upcoming AI initiatives, such as Sovereign AI, agentic AI, and physical AI. Other growth catalysts Nvidia is also benefiting from the increasing demand for high-performance chips in gaming and AI PCs. Gaming revenue rose 42% year-over-year to $3.8 billion in the first quarter, driven by strong adoption of Blackwell architecture systems from gamers, creators, and AI enthusiasts. Enterprise AI is also becoming a significant growth catalyst, with Nvidia bringing AI-powered storage, computing, and networking capabilities directly to corporate environments. The company's RTX Pro, DGX Spark and DGX Station enterprise AI systems are targeting the $500 billion market opportunity. Nvidia's Omniverse and robotics platforms are also powering factory automation and humanoid robotic systems. With all that in mind, long-term investors should consider picking up at least a small stake in Nvidia to profit from the AI wave over the next decade. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now?
