Organic carrots recalled over E. coli outbreak, leaving 15 hospitalized

Al Bawaba20-11-2024

A California grower has issued a nationwide recall of organic carrots it produced for some of the country's leading supermarkets over an E. coli outbreak, including Albertsons, Kroger, Publix, Trader Joe's, Walmart and Whole Foods.
The recall issued by Grimmway Farms on Saturday comes after reports from 18 states documenting nearly 40 cases connecting its baby carrots with the illness. The cases have led to one death and 15 hospitalizations.
"Interviews with sick people and traceback findings show that organic whole and baby carrots sold by Grimmway Farms are making people sick," the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.
"Multiple brands and sizes of bagged organic whole and baby carrots were recalled. These products are no longer for sale at stores but may still be in people's homes. Check your refrigerators and throw them away."
The CDC said most people infected with E. coli will experience cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, with those symptoms running up to four days. The agency said most people recover in seven days.
It added that more severe cases could include kidney problems that may lead to hospitalization.
The baby and whole carrot products being recalled, with the use by date of Sept. 11 to Nov. 12, are branded as 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature's Promise, O-Organic, President's Choice, Raley's, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trade Joe's, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry.

Why Does Heartburn Increase With Age? - Jordan News

As we age, our bodies undergo a range of changes—some more frustrating than others. One common and often uncomfortable issue that tends to become more frequent with age is heartburn. Foods that once caused no problem may now require an antacid afterward. اضافة اعلان While heartburn can affect people of any age, gastroenterologists confirm that it becomes more common with aging. According to a report by HuffPost, understanding the causes behind age-related heartburn is the first step toward reducing its frequency. What Is Heartburn, Exactly? Heartburn occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus—the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach. This is typically due to a weakening or relaxing of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscle ring that normally acts as a valve to keep acid in the stomach. Dr. Vivek Lal, a microbiome scientist and founder of ResBiotic, explains that when this valve fails to function properly, acid reflux happens, causing the characteristic burning sensation in the chest—hence the name heartburn. 3 Reasons Heartburn Becomes More Common With Age 1. Weaker Esophageal Muscles Dr. Mikhail Yakubov, a gastroenterologist, notes that one major reason heartburn is more prevalent in older adults is that esophageal muscles naturally weaken over time. This includes the LES, making it easier for acid to escape into the esophagus. Additionally, the digestive system slows down with age, allowing more time for acid to move in the wrong direction—further increasing the chances of heartburn. 2. Medications As people age, the likelihood of developing conditions like high blood pressure increases. According to the CDC, over 70% of adults aged 60+ have high blood pressure. Dr. Ali Kazemi explains that some medications for high blood pressure, especially nitrates and calcium channel blockers, can relax the LES, increasing the risk of heartburn. Other drugs—including opioids, certain antibiotics, and over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin—can also irritate the stomach lining and contribute to heartburn. 3. Weight Gain It's common to gain some weight with age. Studies show that between the ages of 40 and 66, both men and women typically gain about half a pound to a pound per year. Kazemi and other doctors note that weight gain, especially around the waist, can increase intra-abdominal pressure, pushing stomach acid upward and worsening reflux. Additionally, slower digestion associated with obesity increases the time acid stays in the stomach—another trigger for heartburn. GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic and Mounjaro) used for diabetes and weight loss have also been linked to reflux symptoms due to their delayed gastric emptying effect. What Can You Do If You Have Frequent Heartburn? The good news: you can manage heartburn, regardless of age, by adjusting a few habits: Talk to your doctor if you suspect your medication may be contributing to heartburn. Alternatives may be available. Maintain a healthy weight, especially around the midsection. Eat smaller meals, avoid lying down right after eating, and limit trigger foods (like spicy, fatty, or acidic items). Avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake—both can worsen heartburn. If symptoms persist, a healthcare provider may recommend prescription treatments or further testing to rule out more serious conditions like GERD.

Shakira concert sparks Measles scare—Here's everything that happened

ALBAWABA - Measles alert issued after Shakira 's MetLife concert in New Jersey. An urgent health warning has been issued to Shakira concertgoers in New Jersey after officials claim they may have been exposed to measles. Anyone who attended Shakira 's May 15 performance at MetLife Stadium may have been exposed to the sickness that has been sweeping the United States in recent months, according to a warning released by the New Jersey Health Department on Tuesday. The possible exposure was "linked to a recently discovered case of measles in a non-NJ resident who attended a concert in NJ while infectious," according to officials. Shakira Instagram profile The capacity of the MetLife Stadium is 82,500. Although there are currently no verified cases linked to the concert, officials cautioned that symptoms could appear in affected individuals as late as June 6. The CDC reported that 1,024 measles cases had been diagnosed in 31 U.S. states as of last week. The highly contagious sickness has now claimed the lives of three people. Shakira concertgoers were advised by the NJDOH to be cautious of any potential measles symptoms, which include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that typically develops three to five days after symptoms start. Additionally, they advised people to make sure their measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccinations are current. The outbreak panic coincides with concerns about Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s personal opinions regarding vaccines and how he handled the recent outbreak. During the House Appropriations Committee hearing last week, he was interrogated by Democratic lawmakers about his past vaccine-related assertions, such as the falsehood that the MMR vaccine contained "aborted fetus debris," and his choice to cut funding for vaccine programs. "My opinions about vaccines are irrelevant," Mark Pocan said at the hearing, adding, "I don't think people should be taking medical advice from me." Pocan also stated that he would "probably" vaccinate his children against measles today, but he continued to back down on the issue. Measles may be lethal and has now crossed the U.S. border into Canada and Mexico. It can cause serious health problems, including pneumonia and encephalitis, especially in young children who have not had vaccinations. It can also cause miscarriages in pregnant women, early birth, or low-birth-weight babies. Those who have never had measles or who have not had all recommended vaccinations are the most vulnerable. Experts concur that receiving the MMR vaccine is the safest and most efficient method of preventing measles. Global citizens with independent minds are independent readers. 6 Benefits of Consuming Apple Cider Vinegar Before Bed - Jordan News

6 Benefits of Consuming Apple Cider Vinegar Before Bed The benefits of using apple cider vinegar at night, or specifically before bedtime, are more based on personal experiences rather than extensive research, although there are some limited studies. Some people claim that apple cider vinegar promotes sleep, along with other health benefits. اضافة اعلان According to Health Magazine, it is recommended to consume apple cider vinegar 2-3 hours before bedtime, taking one or two tablespoons diluted in water. Blood Sugar Control A small study looked into the effects of apple cider vinegar on adults with type 2 diabetes. It was observed that participants who consumed apple cider vinegar with a serving of cheese (28 grams) before bed had a greater reduction in fasting blood sugar compared to those who had water and cheese. A recent review found that apple cider vinegar led to a significant decrease in fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c levels. The more apple cider vinegar they consumed, the better the results. Cholesterol A research review found that apple cider vinegar might help lower total cholesterol levels. The review didn't specify whether consuming it at night played a role in these effects. However, researchers suggested that regular consumption over time may be key to achieving cholesterol benefits. Weight Management A recent study found that participants experienced significant reductions in body weight, waist and hip circumference, and body fat percentage with regular apple cider vinegar consumption. If you tend to have your last meal or snack earlier in the day and feel hungry at night, it might make sense to consume apple cider vinegar at that time, as it's best taken on an empty stomach. Reduces Nighttime Appetite The aforementioned study also found that consuming apple cider vinegar before meals may help reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness. Consuming it in the evening could help curb nighttime cravings. Gut Health In an experiment examining the impact of diet on gut and immune system health in young adults, participants followed two diets for 3 weeks—one rich in short-chain fatty acids and the other low in them. The high short-chain fatty acid diet included a drink containing apple cider vinegar after meals. Those on the high short-chain fatty acid diet had more short-chain fatty acids in their stool and blood, along with reduced ammonia levels, suggesting improved gut fermentation and health. Antibacterial Properties A study found that apple cider vinegar helped stop the growth of two harmful bacteria: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli).
