Aerospace, aviation booths prove a crowd puller
Over 20 booths related to the field attracted interest from various groups, including individuals without backgrounds in science, engineering, or technology, during the three-day programme held at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) here.
Visitor Iqbal Ahmad Shukri, 20, said the booths provided insightful information and exposure, enhancing public understanding of TVET and showcasing available pathways to anyone interested in exploring them.
The Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) undergraduate majoring in Islamic Finance and Banking said despite his non-technical field of study, the variety of booths at the event helped him gain a deeper appreciation for the development and impact of technology, especially in the aviation sector.
'For example, the booth featuring flight simulation provided us with a hands-on experience that ignited our interest in aviation. It not only informed us how to become pilots but also highlighted other aviation-related careers that many may never have considered,' he told Bernama.
His friend, Muhammad Ikmal Tamimi Jamaludin, 21, said such programmes enhance his learning as a Technology Management student.
'Here, I can see the direction and potential of my course. More importantly, I now better understand what I've been learning, as my course includes subjects like electrical studies, information technology, and engineering – all of which are closely related to TVET,' he said.
Admal Aviation College's Student Recruitment Officer, Mohammad Rizal Zalkaply, said large-scale programmes like this could create more opportunities for students, especially SPM school leavers, to explore further education in fields that are often less popular.
'Many want to enter into aviation but lack access to information and are often concerned about the costs involved in pursuing such studies. However, programmes like this provide an excellent platform to raise awareness among students about opportunities they may not have been previously aware of.
'For us exhibitors, this is also a great opportunity to share information about the many pathways available through TVET-related courses,' he added.

SIBU (Aug 17): The Ministry of Human Resources has developed the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Admission Unit System as the main channel for TVET course intake across Malaysia, with two methods of student enrolment. Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the two methods are 'Premier Intake' and 'Lifelong Intake'. 'TVET opens up opportunities for students to further their studies in skills-based fields, with the government providing training and strengthening TVET to equip them with multi-tasking skills in line with labour market demands, particularly to meet the needs of the nation's industrial sector. 'As of Dec 31, 2024, there are 1,345 TVET institutions in Malaysia, covering over 1,200 public institutions under 12 ministries, 23 state government institutions and 652 private institutions. 'Enrolment into TVET programmes increased from 166,577 in 2022 to 212,022 in 2024, while overall enrolment rose from 394,976 in 2022 to 436,285 in 2024,' he said when officiating the Education Office Expo and Open Day 2025 in Meradong yesterday. The programme was organised by the Meradong District Education Office. According to him, the latest graduate employability rate has reached 94.5 per cent under the 13th Malaysia Plan. 'Currently, the government is actively developing TVET by emphasising the people's wellbeing, income growth, education and development while also strengthening strategic collaboration between TVET institutions and industries to enhance skills and technological knowledge. 'Through this opportunity, we urge all students and former students to register for MyDigital ID as a digital identity verification. This is to improve security, efficiency, and convenience of online services, strengthen trust in the digital landscape, empower smart data-driven digital government, and support the growth of the nation's digital economy,' he said. Private Healthcare Sector Faces Rising Medical Inflation Pressures, CIMB
Malaysia's private healthcare sector is grappling with rising medical inflation and potential structural changes as discussions advance on the adoption of a diagnosis-related group (DRG)–based hospital payment system, according to insights from a recent meeting between CIMB Securities and Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh, President of the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM). Private hospitals currently cater to about 30% of Malaysia's patient load—funded primarily through self-payment, personal insurance, and employee benefits—while the public sector supports the remaining 70%. Dr Kuljit highlighted that Malaysia's healthcare quality remains on par with, or better than, many ASEAN peers, sustaining the nation's appeal as a medical tourism hub. Medical Inflation Above Global Average Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) data shows that medical inflation hit 15% in 2024, surpassing the global average of 10% and the Asia-Pacific average of 11%. Key cost drivers include the adoption of advanced medical technologies, rising medical supply costs, manpower shortages, and overall inflationary pressures. Between 2021 and 2023, claims in the Medical and Health Insurance/Takaful (MHIT) segment surged 73%, outstripping the 21% growth in premiums. Claim frequency more than doubled to 25 per 100 policyholders in 2023 from 11 in 2018. In response, BNM has capped annual premium increases at 10% until the end of 2026, with hikes staggered over three years. Dr Kuljit cautioned that prolonged premium caps could prompt insurers to tighten reimbursement terms and limit hospital or treatment options, potentially curbing investment in private healthcare. To mitigate rising claims, private hospitals are offering negotiated discounts to insurers, which in turn lower out-of-pocket costs for insured patients compared with self-paying patients. Exploring DRG to Curb Costs The proposed DRG system would replace the traditional fee-for-service model with fixed prices for treatments based on case complexity and industry benchmarks. APHM is working with the Ministry of Health to collect and standardise data for a private healthcare DRG database. However, implementation challenges remain due to the lack of a universal healthcare financing framework and comprehensive private-sector data. Globally, DRG models are largely confined to public healthcare systems, with limited adoption in private healthcare. Dr Kuljit noted that complications or additional care beyond the DRG package often create billing and coverage issues in private settings. Sector Outlook CIMB Securities noted that KPJ Healthcare Bhd could be more exposed to DRG-related risks, with 98.1% of its revenue derived locally in 1Q25, compared with IHH Healthcare Bhd's 18–21% Malaysian revenue contribution. The brokerage maintains an Overweight stance on Malaysia's healthcare sector, citing its defensive nature, resilient demand, organic expansion, and favourable demographics. IHH remains its top pick with a Buy rating and a target price of RM8.50, trading at attractive valuations relative to historical and regional averages. KPJ is rated Hold with a TP of RM2.90, as its current share price is seen to have priced in recent operational improvements.

KKDW aims to strengthen Agro TVET for competitive agro-entrepreneurs
NILAI: The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) aims to reinforce the Agro Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) @KKDW programme to cultivate competent and competitive agro-entrepreneurs. Deputy Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang stated that this initiative would elevate Malaysia's agricultural sector globally. She highlighted the programme's focus on smart agriculture aligned with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, farm mechanisation, and AI integration. Rubiah also emphasised its role in developing agro-based halal industries and fostering global industry partnerships. She spoke at the 21st Convocation Ceremony of Kolej Universiti Agrosains Malaysia (UCAM) in Nilai. Rubiah added that UCAM is instrumental in realising Desa MADANI aspirations by empowering rural communities. She noted UCAM's success in producing graduates skilled in agriculture, livestock, rural development, and business. The government envisions UCAM as a leading agricultural TVET institution in Southeast Asia. A total of 467 graduates from various programmes received their scrolls at the convocation.
