
Former Skudai assemblyman welcomes second RTS proposal
The proposal was raised by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during his meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at The Istana in Singapore on Thursday.
The second RTS, he said, would help speed up the development of Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone by integrating the connectivity between the two countries.
The former DAP Johor chairman also praised Onn Hafiz's openness in listening to opinions from the grounds and his down-to-earth approach in resolving the hardships faced by the ordinary Johoreans.
Dr Boo said back in February, he issued a press statement pertaining to the same issue, suggesting a second RTS after having received input from the grassroots and the local guilds' leaders.
"I am delighted that the Johor government has taken the suggestion into consideration and officially proposed it to the Singaporean government.
"It was hoped that Putrajaya and the Singaporean government would consider the proposal seriously. It would be beneficial to not only Johoreans but also to the development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone."
Dubbed RTS2, the proposed link, if realised, follows a similar system along the Causeway that is nearing completion and will be part of a broader plan to improve mobility and investment synergy between the two economies. (Link: )
Dr Boo said he does not oppose the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) projects, but it requires more in-depth due diligence studies as it involves an enormous amount of investments which is beyond Malaysia's financial capacity at the moment.
"Nonetheless, it could be reconsidered when Malaysia's financial standings would have improved and the geopolitical environment is more conducive for such a mega project, considering the strategic position of the Johor-Singapore Economic Zone," he said, adding that the policy makers would have to gauge as to whether the geopolitical factors are favourable for such a mega project.
He added that the feasibility and demands for HSR could be better reassessed after the double-track Electronic Train System is in full operation and the cost-effectiveness and economic benefits of the HSR could be better reassured.

Cross-border RTS 2 to spur development in Iskandar Puteri: HLIB
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed RTS 2 link between Tuas and Iskandar Puteri, could be a major catalyst for Iskandar Puteri region, especially amid rising cross-border activity under Johor-Singapore Speciali Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB) said while still at an early discussion stage, the RTS 2 proposal was timely and strategically important. HLIB said the JS-SEZ is expected to drive substantial cross-border economic activity and workforce mobility, and a second RTS link would play a key role in easing congestion, improving connectivity and supporting sustained growth in cross-border commuting. However, no specific details on alignment, stop locations or implementation timelines have been disclosed at this juncture. "If realised, RTS 2 could be a major catalyst for Iskandar Puteri, similar to the impact seen around the existing RTS link in JB. "Residential property prices near the current RTS station surged significantly, doubling in just a few years prior to operations commencement, highlighting the powerful value uplift potential of cross-border transit infrastructure," it said. HLIB believe RTS 2 could replicate this trend in Iskandar Puteri, benefitting developers with strategic landbank exposure in the area, notably Sunway Group and UEM Sunrise Bhd. Meanwhile, the firm said for perspective, new high-rise launches near the existing RTS corridor are now commanding prices of RM1,000 to RM1,500 per square foot. In contrast, there have been few recent high-rise launches in Iskandar Puteri. For comparison, it said Sunway's Maple Residences, a landed project launched in late 2024, was priced at just RM550 per square foot. HLIB added that the introduction of RTS 2 would not only uplift property prices in the region but also shift development dynamics. It noted that improved accessibility would justify a move from low-density landed homes to higher-density high-rise developments, improving land efficiency and allowing developers to extract greater value from their landbank.

Johor, Singapore propose cross-border e-hailing service for commuters
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Johor and Singapore have proposed introducing cross-border e-hailing services as an alternative mode of transport for commuters. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the proposal was among the matters discussed during his meeting with Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on Friday. 'This service not only offers more flexible, on-demand mobility options for users but also has the potential to ease congestion on major routes and create income opportunities for local drivers,' he said in a statement yesterday. 'It could also serve as a catalyst for a more user-friendly, safe and competitive transport system, while strengthening integration between both countries' public transport networks.' Onn Hafiz said discussions also touched on the progress of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project, which is scheduled to begin operations in January 2027. 'This includes the physical development of the project, coordination of operating schedules, determination of fare structures, and integration of public transport systems between Johor and Singapore. 'There were also proposals to align operating hours and increase the number of cross-border buses, with services starting earlier than the current 5am schedule, to ease congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow at the Johor Causeway and immigration complexes,' he said.

Singapore: Jail and fine for Myanmar man linked to case involving three bank accounts that received over US$531mil in total
SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): A man linked to a case involving three bank accounts that received more than US$531 million (over S$680 million) in total was sentenced to two years' jail and a fine of S$109,000 on July 30. Myanmar national Nyan Win, 61, who had pleaded guilty to two counts of carrying on a business of providing a payment service in Singapore without a licence, will have to spend an additional six months behind bars should he fail to pay the fine. His Singaporean accomplice Zin Nwe Nyunt, 58, was sentenced to a year and six months' jail on July 14. Court documents stated that Nyan Win, a Singapore permanent resident, and Zin Nwe Nyunt's husband were childhood friends. At the time of the offences, Nyan Win was a director at Piyar International, a company that dealt with motor vehicles. In 2019, another Myanmar national known as Ko Phillip, who operated a commodities trading business, told Nyan Win he was looking for someone to incorporate a company in Singapore to assist in the operations of Ko Phillip's business. This company would then create corporate bank accounts that would be used to receive and transfer funds under Ko Phillip's instructions. He offered Nyan Win a commission of 0.5 Myanmar kyat (S$0.0003) per US dollar received under this arrangement. Nyan Win, who was interested in this opportunity, was uncertain whether he could set up a corporate bank account through Piyar International. Without revealing details, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ryan Lim said this was because banks had previously closed the company's corporate bank accounts. Nyan Win approached Zin Nwe Nyunt's husband and told him about this potential business opportunity with Ko Phillip. As the husband was holding a full-time job, details of which were not disclosed in court documents, he suggested that his wife could assist in the firm's incorporation. It was later agreed between Zin Nwe Nyunt and Nyan Win that the corporate bank accounts would be controlled by Nyan Win. Commissions would then be split between the pair. Zin Nwe Nyunt incorporated wholesale trading company Unione, and from July 2019 to May 2021, she opened accounts with three different banks through the firm. She then handed the banking details to Nyan Win, the court heard. DPP Lim said: 'Across 2020 and 2021, Nyan Win would liaise with Phillip to make arrangements for money to be received into Unione's corporate bank accounts. 'Nyan Win would also receive instructions from Phillip on where to transfer the money once it had been received into the bank accounts. Nyan Win would provide Zin with information regarding the incoming transactions for her to compute the commission amount.' Between January and July 2020, Nyan Win used one of Unione's bank accounts to receive more than US$150 million before the money was transferred out. Following these transactions, Zin Nwe Nyunt made more than $56,000 in commissions while Nyan Win received more than $34,000. On July 21, 2020, the bank closed the account because of the large number of suspicious transactions. The DPP told the court: 'Zin, Nyan Win and Unione did not have in force a valid licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore and were not an exempt payment service provider.' Following the closure of this account, Zin Nwe Nyunt took instructions from Nyan Win and opened a corporate account with another bank. Between late July 2020 and April 2021, Nyan Win used this account to receive more than US$250 million before the money was transferred out. Zin Nwe Nyunt received nearly $76,000 in commissions, while Nyan Win pocketed more than $50,000. DPP Lim said that between August 2020 and March 2021, a third bank account was used to receive more than US$127 million. Over $119 million was then transferred out. In August 2021, the police received information that an Australian scam victim had transferred US$1.8 million to several bank accounts maintained by companies in Singapore. Investigations revealed three of these firms had transferred more than $480,000 to the third bank account. Investigators then uncovered links between Zin Nwe Nyunt, Unione and Nyan Win. The pair were charged in court in 2023. On July 30, Nyan Win's bail was set at $20,000, and he was ordered to surrender himself at the State Courts on Aug 7 to begin serving his sentence. - The Straits Times/Asian News Network
