Dundee United deliver good night in Vienna as Rapid response sets up Tannadice cracker

Daily Record14 hours ago
Jim Goodwin's men twice responded to going behind to pick up a 2-2 draw with a spot in the play-offs on the line next week
Dundee United produced another big European performance against Rapid.

Jim Goodwin's side went to the Allianz Stadium and came away with a morale-boosting 2-2 draw.

Max Watters cancelled out Petter Dahl's opener and then Zac Sapsford, late on, repeated the trick after captain Matthias Seidl had put them back in front.

It means it is all to play for going into the Conference League third round qualifier at Tannadice next week, with the winners to take on the victors between AIK Stockholm and ETO Gyor, with the Swedes holding a 2-1 lead from their home clash.
United had famously taken out Rapid in the 1984 European Cup.
They had lost 2-1 in Vienna but then beat them at home thanks to a Davie Dodds' goal that put them through on away goals to the European Cup semi-finals.
Goodwin went on better and got a result away and is now looking to push through home advantage.
The Dundee United support brought a nice touch of Tangerine to Vienna. Over 1,000 fans had made the most of their trip to the Austrian capital and all its pleasures. It was a night they won't forget.
The older generation may have been brought up on it but for the younger ones it is a new experience.

Goodwin admitted he almost signed for Rapid Vienna as a player. He was invited across under Lothar Mattheus but the German boss was sacked soon after and he missed out on his Austrian move.
The Irishman finally had to make do with a managerial bow in the Allianz Stadium and he more than made his mark.
It proved to be a good night in Vienna for everyone connected with United. Now they will be hoping it can be, quite literally, Goodnight Vienna next week.

More pain for United and Pappoe
Goodwin and his squad were already down to the bare bones. He confirmed before the game that Kristijan Trapanovski and Ryan Strain had both joined captain Ross Graham on he long-term injury list. That was on the back of Amar Fatah and Dario Namoo who weren't fit enough for this game.
The last thing they needed was another injury, but that is exactly what they got in the 14th minute. Isaac Pappoe won a tackle in a challenge with Romeo Amane but it came at a cost. He was left grounded and the physios immediately called for a stretcher. The Ghanian's night was over and how long will he be out for? Ivan Dolcek replaced him.
A Rapid response
Dundee United started the game really well and the 5-3-2 formation was nullifying Rapid. The home side got into good areas but were met with some resilient and disciplined defending. Pappoe's injury, however, forced United to change shape. Goodwin went to a 4-5-1.

It almost brought instant joy when Dolcek skinned a defender and put in a low cross that Rapid managed to scramble clear. United were coming into the game when they were undone in the 29th minute. Bendeguz Bolla put in a low cross and Petter Dahl managed to get away from his maker to knock into the net from close range.
United turn it up to the Max
It began to look a bit precarious for United until Zac Sapsford produced some individual magic. He furrowed up the left, beat Romeo Amane, snaked into the box and put the perfect low ball across the six yard box for Watters to put low under Niklas Hedl in the 33rd minute. It sent the travelling support into delirium, as Goodwin and his backroom team quite rightly gave each other high fives. It also stunned the home support into the bargain.
A big blow before the break
Goodwin would have been looking for his team to weather the storm, get to the interval and then he could rearrange them. Rapid had other ideas and they scored their second two minutes before the break. Bolla again caused the damage up the right. His cross was cleared by Vicko Sevelj, who blocked out Dahl but it fell to Seidl and he fired in into the United net. The visitors then had to withstand another five minutes of pressure before they got back inside.
Super Sapsford
It looked like United would be happy to get away with a narrow defeat but Goodwin and his players had other ideas. Sapsford had run himself into the ground. The Australian also got his just rewards. Stirton found Dolcek and he found the run of the striker who managed to hook it low and brilliantly past the keeper and into the net. He ran to the United fans who couldn't believe their eyes.
Sub Louis Schaub had the ball in the net in stoppage time but luckily it was chopped off for offside and United were able to see it out. The United players fell to their knees at the final whistle. There was frustration from Rapid coach Peter Stoger and the home fans who reacted with boos. He then took his team into a huddle before Goodwin and his heroes went to salute their fans. This tie is very much in the melting pot with everything to play for.

Jamie Carragher says Chelsea transfer decision will cost them shot at title

Jamie Carragher says Chelsea will never win the Premier League until they sign a new goalkeeper to replace Robert Sanchez. A number of pundits have named Chelsea as dark horses to win the title next season after the Blues' encouraging form over the past six months. Chelsea qualified for the Champions League on the final day of the season while winning the Conference League. During the off-season, Chelsea won the controversial Club World Cup. The big-spending west Londoners have bolstered Enzo Maresca's squad this summer with a number of new signings, including Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato. Chelsea look set to complete more business before the transfer deadline as they pursue RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons and Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Carragher doubts Chelsea's heavy spending will result in a Premier League trophy until they sign a new goalkeeper to replace error-prone Sanchez. Chelsea were in talks to sign France No. 1 Mike Maignan earlier in the summer but talks with AC Milan broke down. Speaking on The Overlap, ex-Liverpool and England defender Carragher said: 'Man United started winning league titles after they signed Peter Schmeichel. 'I think of Everton as a kid and Neville Southall. Man City changed the keeper and started winning the league. We brought in Alisson and started winning the league. Chelsea started winning the league when they signed Petr Cech. 'That's why Chelsea can't win the league. No matter what Chelsea do or how much they spend, they can't win the league because they haven't got a goalkeeper to win the league.' Discussing the importance of goalkeepers, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes added: 'I don't think enough is mentioned about goalkeepers. 'Look at the best team last year, they had the best goalkeeper in the world. Ederson worries me for Man City and I'm not sure James Trafford is the answer. 'Ball-playing is a big part of it these days but I think it's still secondary, you still need to be a presence in the goal. 'I look at Alisson and I'm not sure how to score past him, I don't think that with any other goalkeeper in the Premier League.' Jamie Gittens – £48m from Borussia Dortmund Joao Pedro – £55m from Brighton Liam Delap – £30m from Ipswich Town Mamadou Sarr – £12m from Lyon Dario Essugo – £18m from Sporting CP Estevao Willian – £29m from Palmeiras Kendry Paez – £17m from Independiente del Valle Jorrol Hato – £37m from Ajax While questioning Chelsea's No. 1, Carragher also raised doubts over the club's summer signings. 'When I look at Chelsea, I think about what you did in the Club World Cup – everyone wanted to win it,' he said. 'Real Madrid really wanted to win, PSG did, and so did Manchester City, all those that we class as the best teams. 'So I do think it's a big thing and it will help build a connection between Enzo Maresca and the supporters, which wasn't really there last season. More Trending 'I'm not sure it'll push Chelsea any closer to the title though. When Chelsea do business, over the last couple of years, it feels like a lot of players are changing without anyone really lifting the level. 'I know Cole Palmer has been amazing, but all your wingers feel the same. 'A perfect example is [Jamie] Gittens coming in and Madueke leaving – there is no elevation, and I see that with a lot of positions at Chelsea.' And then wondered if he was going to end up nursing a concussion as bottles rained down from the Gravediggers end at the Partizan Stadion. Even before the second half of last night's uproarious European triumph in Belgrade kicked off, then, the visiting skipper wanted to clarify something with Maltese referee Philip Farrugia. If he should just happen to score again, Boyle asked, would it be OK to go and celebrate with the Hibs fans in the far corner? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad You want your strikers to be confident. And, even as he nursed a heavily strapped left knee guaranteed to cause him some discomfort on the flight back to Edinburgh, Boyle had every right to feel as if he could make the journey in a single bound; he might as well have been wearing Superman's famous S under his yellow away shirt. Boyle, full of pride in how Hibs stood up to an intimidating atmosphere, followed up that back-post finish – more on that later – with a second-half penalty that carried David Gray's team a long way towards the UEFA Conference League play-offs. Pending events in Edinburgh next Thursday night, of course. And the experienced Socceroos international, a man who has become such a big part of the Hibernian story in this 150th anniversary season, revealed just how crazy things had felt out on the field. Asked about the moment when he could lead the entire Hibs team over to celebrate his second goal, a well-taken penalty won by the presence of Kieron Bowie, Boyle said: 'It was better than the first one when I was getting vodka bottles off my head! But like you say, it was brilliant. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I asked the ref at half-time if I could go over and celebrate in front of our fans, if I scored, after he told me not to celebrate in front of the home fans. So I already knew in my head that there could be another goal for me here. 'It's all down to big Kieron causing havoc in the box. That decision comes so there was no doubt in my mind that I was going to take it. Yeah, lovely feeling. 'It's great to celebrate with the fans. They can have that memory, hopefully something that lives with them for a long time. But that will mean us finishing the job off next week 'Told you the 100th goal was coming! Yeah, incredible feeling. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'The atmosphere was brilliant. It was a joy to play in front of that. 'The boys didn't crack or crumble in intimidating environment' 'It was intimidating. But the boys never cracked, never crumbled. It was a professional performance. 'Defensively, a great display. A clean sheet away from home. Everything you ask for. 'And obviously, the red card comes from Rocky putting his body on the line, which is perfect. You can see how he's matured as a defender. He's a real leader for us. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Big Rocky does love a Sliding Doors moment, as you say. He really does. 'But that's because he's just so tenacious. He puts his body on the line. Exactly what he did against Partizan. So yeah, we're very lucky to have him. Post-match victory celebrations caught on camera 'And then it's big dum-dum (Bowie) running through people at the other end who wins the free-kick! Kieron is such a threat up front, a really big boy for his age. 'He's a joy to play with. He'll only get better. He'll score a lot of goals for us. I'm sure he's got a terrific career ahead of him.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Explaining the planning that had gone into the opening goal, a back-post finish from a corner, Boyle said: 'It happened so quick. Obviously, flicked off Warren's head. 'But I've been telling them to put me at the back post because for corners - because I reckon there's 10 goals a season there! 'We've worked a lot on set pieces through the week. We know we're an attacking threat and we know defensively that we're really good. Thankfully, it paid off tonight and I was lucky to tap it in.' A moment up there with Scotland ace John McGinn's goal in Greece If anyone can add perspective to the achievement – still only halfway completed, admittedly – pulled off by Gray's men, it's Boyle. A player who has been around for some pretty decent European adventures. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Recalling a famous aggregate win over Asteras Tripolis back in 2018, he said: 'Yeah, it's fantastic for the club. Like you say, I've experienced it before, John McGinn scoring that goal in Greece. But this was a perfect night. 'Credit to the manager and the way he wants us to play. We were brave tonight, and we executed the game plan perfectly. 'We stayed composed. We kept our heads at the right time and obviously, we took advantage of that. 'We maybe got a bit sloppy in the second half. We could have done better. But like you say, it's historic for the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Delighted for the fans that travelled. Hopefully, a safe journey back home and we can see them next week. But yeah, all round brilliant night. 'As a player it's just amazing to play in front of that sort of crowd. I mean, playing at an international level you get the feeling of that. Playing at Tynecastle, Ibrox. It's intimidating. 'I've played Jordan away with Australia. So I knew exactly what to expect. It can be quite intimidating. 'But there's a lot of people in the squad that haven't experienced that. And that's a great experience for them. Everyone rose to the occasion. It's perfect. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It's the crowd you want to play in front of. Intimidating. It can only give you that buzz and keep you going.' Boyle, who has backed Grant Hanley to bring even more experience and leadership to Hibs following the Scotland defender's decision to sign a two-year contract despite having offers elsewhere, looked in a bit of discomfort as his left leg was bandaged from upper shin to lower thigh. Given his injury history with that knee, a little concern is only natural. The 32-year-old, who went down in some distress after turning sharply on a slightly sticky pitch, said: 'The knee's alright. I had a bit of a scare. Slipped and hyperextended it. So hopefully it settles down well. 'I've got no time to dwell on it. We've got a game in a few days. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Yeah, I think that is your first thought (to worry). And then I knew when it was alright. 'I was just telling them to waste time a little bit. So yeah. Like you say, it's always a bit of a scare. 'These things can happen in a game. Touch wood it doesn't happen again. And I'll be alright. 'But it's just precautionary at the moment. So yeah, I'm ready to go again. I'm ready to hopefully score more goals.'
