The Indian Test captain secured the award ahead of England's Ben Stokes and South Africa's Wiaan Mulder. The 25-year-old Indian captain demonstrated exceptional form in July, accumulating 567 runs at an average of 94.50 in three Tests. His remarkable performance included a double century and two hundreds across six innings. This recognition holds special significance as it marks Gill's first series as India's Test captain. "It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I will cherish forever and will be one of the highlights of my tour to England," Gill said. "The Test series against England was a learning experience for me as captain and we had some outstanding performances from both sides, which I am sure players from both sides will remember for a long time. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo I would like to thank the jury for selecting me for this award and my teammates who have been with me during the course of this exciting series. I look forward to continuing my form in the season ahead and bring more laurels for the country. " This achievement marks Gill's fourth ICC Player of the Month award, following his wins in February 2025, January 2023, and September 2023. He becomes the first male player to receive this honor four times, joining female cricketers Ash Gardner and Hayley Matthews who have achieved the same feat. At Edgbaston, Gill played a pivotal role in India's historic victory. He scored 269 in the first innings after coming in at 95/2, followed by 161 in the second innings, leading to a 336-run win. His combined match total of 430 runs stands as the second-highest in Test history, only behind Graham Gooch's 456. The Edgbaston innings saw Gill set multiple records. He became the first Indian captain to score a Test double century in England and only the second Indian skipper to achieve this feat outside India, after Virat Kohli. He surpassed Sunil Gavaskar's previous record of 221 runs, setting a new benchmark for the highest Test score by an Indian in England. Additionally, he broke Sachin Tendulkar's 21-year record for the highest overseas score by an Indian outside Asia. Despite modest scores of 16 and 6 at Lord's, Gill bounced back at Old Trafford with a crucial second-innings century of 103. This innings helped secure a draw and ultimately led to a 2-2 series result. Gill's Old Trafford performance was particularly significant as India faced a challenging situation. The team had lost two wickets without scoring while needing 311 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Batting at number four, Gill showed exceptional leadership in his first series as captain. His performance has helped India secure the third position in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. His ability to convert starts into substantial scores, particularly during challenging situations, proved crucial in India's comebacks throughout the series. This contributed significantly to the eventual drawn series outcome. Gill finished the five-Test series with an impressive 754 runs in 10 innings, averaging 75.40, earning him the Player of the Series award. His series total stands as the second-highest in World Test Championship history. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
