Dubai announces new AI-powered traffic system

We all know that the traffic in Dubai is not great at the moment, and that's why it's amazing to see so many efforts by the city to improve it. Dubai's Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that it has started work on on the next-generation traffic signal control system (UTC-UX Fusion), incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and digital twin technologies.
According to RTA, the project aims to improve travel time and reduce congestion by 10 to 20 per cent and overall enhance the travel experience for all motorists in Dubai including public transport passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists, while also prioritising emergency vehicles and public transport.
Features of this new system include predictive traffic analysis to optimise signal timings in anticipation of expected traffic movements. It also incorporates digital twin technology, allowing signal adjustments to be simulated and their impact assessed before actual implementation, while also enabling priority-based traffic management. Additionally, the system will use data from road sensors to further refine signal timings with greater efficiency.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, stated:'The UTC-UX Fusion system dynamically adapts to real-time traffic changes by analysing data and making intelligent decisions to optimise signal timings. It also supports future technologies and initiatives, such as Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X), which facilitate communication between smart vehicles and traffic signals to enhance traffic flow efficiency. This will play a key role in reducing journey times, improving traffic fluidity, and enhancing the overall mobility experience across Dubai,
There have been lots of announcement recently to assist in the traffic movements around the emirate, such as improved public transport options like the RTA Rail Bus, the Dubai Loop underground system. Additionally, there is constant development of roads with a Dhs798 project been announced to cut Dubai traffic and reduce some motorists travel time from 9.4 minutes to 2.8 minutes.

RTA conducts motorcycle inspection campaigns
As part of its ongoing commitment to training quality and learner safety, the Licensing Agency at Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) carried out a series of comprehensive inspection campaigns across driver training facilities in the emirate. Held over a period of three months under RTA's routine inspection schedule, the campaigns focused on motorcycles used for training driving licence applicants, as well as the condition of training tracks and practice yards. The inspections aimed to ensure full compliance with RTA's approved standards governing track conditions and practical training procedures. These efforts are designed to uphold public safety and ensure a secure, high-quality training environment across all facilities and equipment used in practical driving lessons. The inspection campaigns covered 26 training facilities, during which a total of 2,391 inspections were conducted and several violations were recorded. Among the most notable violations were failure to meet the technical standards for motorcycle tyre maintenance and non-compliance with the training session durations specified by the RTA. Saeed Al Ramsi, Director of Licensing Activities Monitoring at RTA's Licensing Agency, stated: 'One of the key objectives of these campaigns is to stress the importance of regular motorcycle maintenance and the correct placement of directional signage on training tracks, as both are critical to delivering a smooth and safe training experience that meets the highest standards of safety and training quality.' 'These campaigns are part of RTA's efforts to improve service efficiency and ensure that all relevant entities comply with the applicable regulations in a way that enhances the customer experience and their trust in the quality of services delivered.' Recently, the RTA activated the Vehicle Inspection Appointment Booking service on the 'RTA Dubai' app and the website . Effective June 2, 2025, the booking will be mandatory for all vehicle inspections at technical testing centres across the emirate. For customers who prefer to visit without a prior appointment, an optional walk-in service will be available at 19 centres, subject to an additional service fee of Dhs100.

RTA set to upgrade Al Wasl Road in Dubai
In line with the directives of the wise leadership to accelerate the development of infrastructure projects and enhance the capacity of Dubai's road network, thereby improving traffic flow and keeping pace with the emirate's comprehensive development, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an integrated project to upgrade Al Wasl Road. The initiative also aims to address urban expansion, accommodate population growth, and enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The development spans 15 km, from the intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to the junction with 2nd December Street. It includes the upgrade of six intersections, comprising enhancements to one junction and the construction of five tunnels totalling 3,850 metres. The street will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction. The project is expected to reduce travel time along Al Wasl Road by 50% and increase capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, stated: 'Al Wasl Road Development Project forms part of a master plan developed by the RTA to upgrade the road network in the area, which also includes enhancements to Umm Suqeim and Al Safa Streets. These projects are designed with a focus on creative and aesthetic elements, incorporating dedicated pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, boulevards, and vibrant urban public spaces that promote community interaction. The plan also features decorative landscaping and the creation of dynamic urban environments. The project serves a vital district that offers a broad array of modern tourism and lifestyle destinations, including beaches, luxury hotels, fine dining venues, and residential neighbourhoods, home to over one million residents.' Al Tayer added: 'The project involves the development of Al Wasl Road from its intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to its junction with 2nd December Street, spanning a total length of 15 km. The street will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction. It also includes the upgrade of six intersections along Al Wasl Road, specifically at Al Thanya, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, Umm Amara, Al Orouba, and Al Safa Streets. This will be achieved through the construction of five tunnels with a total length of 3,850 metres.' He continued: 'The intersection with Al Thanya Street will undergo improvements, while a unidirectional tunnel will be constructed at the intersection with Al Manara Street. This tunnel will consist of three lanes and branch into two separate routes: two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street, and two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road to Umm Suqeim Street, with a total capacity of 4,500 vehicles per hour.'
