Things Get Rocky in Denver

Jared Diamond writes that Colorado Rockies fans 'miraculously' still support the team ('The Rockies Are a Major Disaster,' Sports, May 12). Yet there are nuances to those Coors Field attendance numbers. At the Saturday night 21-0 embarrassment against San Diego that Mr. Diamond cites, casual observation showed that about half of the attendees were wearing Padres gear. This is the Rockies' business plan: Come to the ballpark, all you late arrivals to the Colorado Front Range, and cheer for the team you loved in the area you were priced out of. Dodgers, Giants, Cubs and Phillies all make their home away from home in Denver. When our high-school baseball team sold Rockies tickets as a fundraiser, we had a difficult time getting rid of them except to fans of other teams.
Rockies fans, in reality, are disgusted by front-office decision-making. The list of Colorado Rockies fans' grievances is long, but ownership still fills seats.

Nuggets Trade Idea Lands Nikola Jokic Perfect Co-Star

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Denver Nuggets are coming off a disappointing end to their postseason run, falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the second round. This marked the second straight year that Denver fell in the second round, and the team is expected to be very active this offseason. More NBA news: Suns Preparing to Make Big Decision on Devin Booker Amid Roster Rumors With star Nikola Jokic still in his prime, the Nuggets will look to maximize this core group in place. But there could be some changes coming to Denver following another failed title run. In a new trade idea from NBA writer Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report, the Nuggets land a perfect co-star for Jokic. Swartz has Denver landing All-Star big Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz. Here is what the deal could look like: Denver Nuggets Receive: F Lauri Markkanen Charlotte Hornets Receive: F Michael Porter Jr. Utah Jazz Receive: G/F Josh Green, PF Grant Williams, F Josh Okogie, F/C Zeke Nnaji, 2027 first-round pick (lottery-protected via Miami Heat, from Charlotte Hornets), 2032 first-round pick (unprotected via Denver Nuggets) PHOENIX, ARIZONA - FEBRUARY 07: Lauri Markkanen #23 of the Utah Jazz attempts to steal the ball from Devin Booker #1 of the Phoenix Suns during the second half at Footprint Center on February 07,... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - FEBRUARY 07: Lauri Markkanen #23 of the Utah Jazz attempts to steal the ball from Devin Booker #1 of the Phoenix Suns during the second half at Footprint Center on February 07, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More Photo byLanding Markkanen could take some of the pressure off Jokic in the frontcourt for Denver. Jokic isn't the best defender, and teams will directly attack him to give themselves a better chance at scoring. But with Markkanen in the mix, teams would need to figure out a different way to gain an advantage. Markkanen could take on the tougher defensive assignments, giving Jokic more energy to run the offensive attack. A trio of Jokic, Markkanen, and guard Jamal Murray would be lethal to deal with offensively as well. All three can space the floor extremely well, and it would force teams to pick their poison on which big man to focus more on. Markkanen is a very capable shooter from deep, which would give the Nuggets even more room to space the floor. But he can also take defenders off the dribble to the basket, giving them a different type of big man than they have been used to. Losing Porter Jr. would be tough, but the writing has been on the wall for him in Denver for some time. Porter Jr. has been in trade rumors for years, and it seems that the Nuggets may want to move on. Denver has multiple different routes that it can go this offseason, but this could be a move to get them closer to winning another title. Louisville makes 6th CWS with 3-2 win over Miami on King's RBI double in 7th

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Eddie King Jr. doubled in the winning run in the seventh inning to lift Louisville to a 3-2 win over Miami on Sunday, advancing the Cardinals to their sixth College World Series. King's clutch hit came after Jake Munroe's two-out single and a wild pitch. Neither team was among the top 16 seeds, but the Cardinals (39-21) were the surprise winners of the Nashville Regional hosted by overall No. 1 seed Vanderbilt and Miami won Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg Regional. Louisville will face the Oregon State-Florida State winner in Omaha, Nebraska, later this week. Miami (34-26) was hoping for its 26th CWS appearance. Miami took the lead on Max Galvin's two-run homer in the third. The Cardinals got those back in the fourth on an RBI double by Zion Rose and a fielder's choice. Miami starter Ethan Eberle went five innings, allowing six hits. Jake Schweitzer (4-2) gave up two hits and two walks in three innings. Justin West got two outs in the ninth but also walked two before Brennyn Cutts got a flyout for his second save. Will Smith (3-1), the third of five Miami pitchers, took the loss. ___ AP college sports:

White caps rally in 8th with 2-run single, Arizona to CWS with 4-3 win over Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Mason White's two-run single capped a three-run eighth inning, lifting Arizona to a 4-3 victory over North Carolina on Sunday to earn the Wildcats their 19th trip to the College World Series. Arizona (44-19) dropped the opener of the Chapel Hill Super Regional 18-2 to the fifth-seeded Tar Heels (46-15) before winning 10-8 on Saturday and rallying on Sunday. The Wildcats, whose last appearance in the CWS was in 2021, will face Coastal Carolina in Omaha, Nebraska, later this week The final game belonged to the pitchers as both teams mustered just five hits. Arizona starter Smith Bailey gave up three runs and all five hits in his six innings. Two of the hits were singles ahead of Jackson Van De Brake's home run in the third. Julian Tonghini (5-2) pitched a perfect seventh, Casey Hintz gave up a pair of walks in a scoreless eighth, and Tony Pluta faced three batters in the ninth for his 14th save. Garen Caulfield gave Arizona a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home run. The Wildcats had one hit from there until Andrew Cain singled leading off the eighth. An error put two on base before Walker McDuffie relieved starter Ryan Lynch. That's when Easton Breyfogle beat out a bunt to third with Cain scoring when the third baseman threw the ball away. A walk loaded the bases before McDuffie (3-3) recorded an out with an infield fly. White greeted reliever Aidan Haugh with a single up the middle for the lead. Arizona is heading to the finals for only the fifth time since winning its third national title in 1986. The Wildcats also won in 1976, 1980 and 2012. North Carolina failed to advance to the CWS for just the third time in the 10 super regionals the Tar Heels have hosted. ___ AP college sports:
