Chennai: The debate over abolishing the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title has its pieces set on opposite squares. While legendary Judit Polgar has thrown her weight behind it, Indian star Tania Sachdev, a WGM herself, believes there's no need to take away the titles as they encourage many young girls.
'I don't think I'm particularly against women's titles, but I do feel young girls should play in as many open tournaments as possible. They should train with boys, compete against them and not focus just on women's tournaments. There is no need to take away women's titles because it does encourage young girls to take up the sport,' said International Master (IM) Tania, who is commentating at the Chennai Grand Masters event.

While seeing the case for a change in the bigger picture, she mentioned it should be a 'slower transition'. 'I get it in the long run, there is something to be said for that, but I think it will take away an entire generation of chess players. So maybe you have to make that into a slower transition. I also feel that young girls playing only women's tournaments can kind of limit your potential.'
Poll
Should the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title be abolished?
Yes, it should be abolished
No, it should remain
Only if more girls compete in open tournaments
Unsure / Need more information
Tania feels the shift towards girls competing more in open events is already underway, a stark contrast from her own playing days.

The 38-year-old from Delhi said: 'The more girls do it (competing in men's tournaments), the more comfortable it gets. This change in thought process is already happening compared to even five years ago. In my time, that was not even a question; there were barely any open tournaments. Now, the younger generation is of this mindset that they want to compete with the boys.
It's slowly going in the right direction.'
'WOMEN AREN'T LAGGING BEHIND'
Teenager Divya Deshmukh's recent FIDE Women's World Cup victory over her senior Koneru Humpy has given fresh impetus to women's chess in India.
Tania said that victory made it clear women aren't lagging behind in this shining era of Indian chess.
'To see both Humpy and Divya taking part in the Candidates will be a big moment for Indian chess fans. Having two Indians from different generations in the final, it's just so inspirational. I think the girls are also proving that they're not going to be left behind in this golden generation,' said Tania.
Regarding her own playing career, Tania said she still has some chess left in her but now relishes commentating more. 'I love commentary. I feel like I don't love playing as much as I used to, but I still love the game just as much,' said Tania.

Irfan Pathan reveals Gary Kirsten's 'exact words' that confirmed MS Dhoni dropped him: 'If it had been anyone else...'

When Irfan Pathan first burst onto the scene, the expectations were sky-high. He was just 19 when he made his Test debut in Australia – a daunting stage for any newcomer – and immediately caught attention with his aggression, swing, and accuracy. Within a year, he was drafted into the ODI squad and soon became a regular across formats, even featuring in India's first-ever T20I in 2006 against South Africa. Irfan Pathan spoke about MS Dhoni's role in his being dropped from Team India(AFP) But in 2009, the promising script took an abrupt turn. Having already been sidelined from the Test side a year earlier, Irfan faced another major blow when he was dropped from the ODI setup after a series against Sri Lanka. The setback was crushing – he would spend the next three years away from the format, which enjoyed a significantly higher priority than the T20Is at the time. By the time his recall came in 2012, the landscape of Indian fast bowling had shifted. New faces like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma had staked their claim with consistent performances, making the competition stiffer than ever. Irfan managed just 12 more ODIs in that comeback before his international career quietly wound down, culminating in his retirement in 2020. 5 years since his retirement, Irfan has finally opened up on the circumstances that led to his departure from the national team. The left-armer, who was handy with the bat in the lower order, too, revealed the reasoning he was given about being dropped, and how MS Dhoni – the Indian captain at the time – took the call to sideline the pacer. 'It was back in 2009, when we were in New Zealand. Before that, my brother (Yusuf Pathan) and I had won matches in Sri Lanka. The situation in which we had pulled a win – if it had been anyone else in our place, they wouldn't have been dropped for a year. In that match against Sri Lanka, we needed 60 runs from just 27–28 balls, and we won it from there,' Irfan began as he narrated the story during a chat with TheLallantop. 'In New Zealand, I was benched for the first match, the second match, and the third match as well. The fourth match was a draw because of rain. I wasn't in the final match either. Then I asked Gary sir why I had been dropped. If there was something I needed to improve, he could tell me, but I wanted to know the reason I was left out.' Gary's two reasons Kirsten was India's head coach at the time, and Irfan revealed how it became clear to him through the South African's explanation that Dhoni was involved in his being dropped. 'Kirsten gave me two reasons. He said, 'There are things that are not in my hand.' Those were Gary's exact words. I asked whose hands it was in, but he didn't tell me. I already knew whose hands it was in. The playing XI is decided by the captain's choice. The decision rests with the captain, coach, and management. Dhoni was the captain at that time. I won't get into whether that decision was right or wrong, because every captain has the right to run the team in his own way,' Pathan said. 'The second answer was that they were looking for a batting all-rounder at No. 7. Fair enough — my brother was a batting all-rounder, while I was a bowling all-rounder. The two were different from each other, but there was only room for one in the team. Nowadays, if you ask whether two all-rounders are needed, people would gladly take both.'

'My country, my identity, my life' – Gautam Gambhir's powerful Independence Day message

India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir (Ben Whitley/PA via AP) On Independence Day , Gautam Gambhir kept it simple but powerful. Posting a picture with the tricolour, he wrote, 'My country, my identity, my life! Jai Hind!🇮🇳' — a message that resonated with fans across India. It was more than a patriotic caption; it was a reflection of a man whose cricketing journey has always been intertwined with the nation's pride. Gautam Gambhir tweet on X Now serving as India's head coach, Gambhir carries the same passion he once showed as an opener. His tenure, which began in July 2024, has already been full of highs, lows and intense scrutiny. In Test cricket, results have been mixed. India has played 15 Tests under him, winning five, losing eight and drawing two. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The most recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England was a thrilling battle — India lost the first and third Tests, bounced back to win the second and final matches, with a high-scoring draw in Manchester sealing a 2-2 series result. It was a contest filled with tense finishes, resilient comebacks and moments that reminded fans of India's fighting spirit. Poll How do you feel about Gautam Gambhir's impact as India's head coach so far? Very Positive Somewhat Positive Neutral Negative In white-ball cricket, Gambhir's impact has been more immediate. India has dominated in T20Is, winning 13 out of 15 games, remaining unbeaten in series. ODIs saw an early stumble with a home series loss to Sri Lanka, but the team rebounded strongly, winning eight consecutive matches and lifting the 2025 Champions Trophy. Gambhir's leadership style has sometimes drawn criticism for too much chopping and changing, but he remains steadfast in taking responsibility, famously saying, 'We lose together, we win together.' For a man who scored 97 in the 2011 World Cup final and 75 in the 2007 T20 World Cup final, that sense of accountability and love for the country is nothing new. His Independence Day post was a reminder that, for him, cricket and patriotism have always gone hand in hand. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

NFL's social justice campaign enters sixth year with refreshed messaging

For the sixth straight season, the NFL will feature on-field social justice messages at all games. Each of the league's 32 teams will display one of four approved slogans - 'End Racism', 'Stop Hate', 'Choose Love' or 'Inspire Change' - in one end zone during home games. The opposite end zone will read ' It Takes All of Us ' at every game. The only change from 2024 is that 'Inspire Change' replaces 'Vote.' International games will continue to feature 'End Racism' and 'It Takes All of Us' in the back of both end zones. These messages are part of the league's broader cause campaigns, including Salute to Service and Crucial Catch, which will appear during select weeks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sleep Apnea Ruined My Life – Then I Found This Simple Trick Health Insight Undo Talking to The The Associated Press, Anna Isaacson , the NFL's senior vice president of social responsibility, emphasised the league's commitment to amplifying player voices and fostering unity, noting that football has long brought people from diverse backgrounds together to enjoy America's most popular sport. They will rotate all four messages during the season. Players will again be allowed to display one of five messages - including 'It Takes All of Us' - on helmet decals. Since launching the Inspire Change initiative in 2017, the NFL has contributed over $460 million to grant partners and grassroots organisations. The league views these combined on-field and off-field efforts as a serious responsibility to promote unity and drive positive community impact.
