Gautam Gambhir
kept it simple but powerful. Posting a picture with the tricolour, he wrote, 'My country, my identity, my life! Jai Hind!🇮🇳' — a message that resonated with fans across India.
It was more than a patriotic caption; it was a reflection of a man whose cricketing journey has always been intertwined with the nation's pride.

Now serving as India's head coach, Gambhir carries the same passion he once showed as an opener. His tenure, which began in July 2024, has already been full of highs, lows and intense scrutiny. In Test cricket, results have been mixed. India has played 15 Tests under him, winning five, losing eight and drawing two.

The most recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England was a thrilling battle — India lost the first and third Tests, bounced back to win the second and final matches, with a high-scoring draw in Manchester sealing a 2-2 series result. It was a contest filled with tense finishes, resilient comebacks and moments that reminded fans of India's fighting spirit.
Poll
How do you feel about Gautam Gambhir's impact as India's head coach so far?
Very Positive
Somewhat Positive
Neutral
Negative
In white-ball cricket, Gambhir's impact has been more immediate.
India has dominated in T20Is, winning 13 out of 15 games, remaining unbeaten in series. ODIs saw an early stumble with a home series loss to Sri Lanka, but the team rebounded strongly, winning eight consecutive matches and lifting the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Gambhir's leadership style has sometimes drawn criticism for too much chopping and changing, but he remains steadfast in taking responsibility, famously saying, 'We lose together, we win together.' For a man who scored 97 in the 2011 World Cup final and 75 in the 2007 T20 World Cup final, that sense of accountability and love for the country is nothing new. His Independence Day post was a reminder that, for him, cricket and patriotism have always gone hand in hand.

'No Designated Finisher, All-Format Captain Soon': Gambhir's Roadmap To Transform India

Last Updated: Head coach Gautam Gambhir will focus on T20Is as India prepares for the Asia Cup, aiming to rebrand the team by emphasizing players' skillsets over designated roles. Following a successful England tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir will shift his focus to the T20Is as India's next assignment is the Asia Cup, which begins next month. The shortest format has always been the former opener's strength, both as a player and as a coach, with plenty of facts to back it up. T20 has brought him recognition. A decade ago, he led Kolkata Knight Riders to back-to-back title victories. Last year, he stepped into the mentor's shoes and helped the franchise clinch its third. Even before taking up the role of India's head coach, Gambhir was vocal about the selection of the T20I team based on the IPL performances. As he gears up to guide the men in blue in the Asia Cup and the series against Australia and South Africa, the mentality for team selection seems the same. According to The Times Of India, Gambhir is determined to rebrand the T20 side. As the team has often received criticism for not keeping along with time, Gambhir is believed to address that primarily. 'The chatter in Indian cricket is that he would prefer an all-format captain soon to build a common culture. Gambhir has been very clear with his vision. He walked in with an idea to rebrand the T20 team. India have often been accused of not being able to move with the times in the shortest format. Gambhir has decided to address it with players who can be branded as T20 specialists," the report said. The report further stated that there are no more designated finishers in the dressing room. Instead, the roles are assigned as per the skillset of the players. 'There's no room for getting comfortable. Roles are assigned as per skills, not batting numbers. He is comfortable with this facet of a modern-day T20 cricketer," the report said. 'Shivam Dube, for one, will always get preference since he can go up the order and blast the bowling if the openers get off to great starts. There are no designated finishers," it further read. After the Champions Trophy success and a decent England tour, things seem to be falling in place for Gambhir. The upcoming T20I assignments will be crucial for him, especially when the team looks to defend the T20 World Cup title at home in a few months. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ex-India cricketer hits out at Indian spearhead - 'Two Tests India won were two matches Bumrah...'

Manchester: India's Jasprit Bumrah celebrates with teammates after taking the wicket of England's Liam Dawson during the fourth day of the fourth Test match between India and England, at the Old Trafford cricket ground, in Manchester, England. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar)(PTI07_26_2025_000207B) Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has joined the bandwagon of ex-cricketers criticising Indian spearhead Jasprit Bumrah , who played only three Tests in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. "The game will always show us the mirror however much we try and gloss over things," Manjrekar wrote in his column for HT. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "It was poetic justice that the two Tests India won were the two matches Bumrah did not play. "This should embolden the Indian selectors to make some hard choices when it comes to big-name players. "This series has been a great lesson to them and to us too. The two Test victories India achieved did not feature Virat (Kohli), (Cheteshwar) Pujara, Rohit (Sharma), (Mohammed) Shami or Bumrah! IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill on Oval thriller, Siraj's spell, and missing Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah "It reminded us of the eternal truth of sport and life — no one, however great, is indispensable. And this is how India must handle Bumrah,' he added. Manjrekar also maintained that Indian cricket should not adjust for Bumrah. Poll Do you agree with Sanjay Manjrekar's criticism of Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the Tests? Yes, he should have played better No, he is a key player Partially, he needs to improve I don't have an opinion 'As for Bumrah, of whom I am a fan, if he really wants to serve Indian Test cricket, longevity and durability are imperative for him. After all, the true test of a great athlete is to still turn up when not 100% fit and deliver,' said Manjrekar. 'Indian cricket must not adjust for Bumrah — Bumrah must. That is, if he wants to,' he added. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
