Veteran broadcaster Tommo cheers home a 66-1 Redcar winner he owns with his wife

VETERAN racing broadcaster Derek Thompson, who steps down from commentating this summer, had a moment to savour at Redcar today when his horse Cheerleader won at 66-1.
'Tommo' owns Cheerleader with his wife, Caroline, and the filly is trained at Loftus by Tina Jackson, the partner of his brother, Howard.
The three-year-old won the Join Racing TV Now Handicap comfortably in the hands of Joanna Mason, with a delighted Thompson frantically cheering his winner home from the press box.
He revealed that the Dandy Man filly had been bought after his wife 'fell in love with her', adding: 'She'll be watching from home, and the tears will be streaming down her face.'
Jockey Ben Robinson and North Yorkshire trainer David O'Meara also had a good day, landing a double with Willowinghurn in the opening racingtv.com EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (Division 1), and old stager Muscika in the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap (Division 1).
Willowinghurn, owned by the Hurn Racing Club from Beverley, was impressive on only her second run, with Robinson reporting: 'David thought she'd run very well today. She's a nice filly who's on the up, and I never thought we'd lose.'
Muscika, now 11, was winning for the 18th time after getting the better of Michael Herrington's Papa Cocktail by a nose. Robinson, who thought he'd been pipped, said: 'I get on great with this horse and he always gives 110 per cent.'
On a day for veterans, long-serving jockey John Egan was shown to good effect when Davvy, trained in Wales by David Evans, outstayed favourite Calafiori in the racingtv.com EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (Division 2).
'I'm enjoying it more than ever,' said Egan, who's had four winners in 10 days.
Rising star Billy Loughnane came with an attractive book of rides and didn't leave empty-handed thanks to George Boughey's Newmarket raider, Cadarn, scoring for the second successive Redcar meeting.
'It was a very nice performance – he's coming to himself now,' said the teenage jockey after the gelding had made all to beat John Quinn's Tropez Power by a length in the Marske Fabrication & Engineering Straight Mile Handicap.
The step up to a mile and six proved to be the key to the success of another Newmarket raider, the Alice Haynes-trained Bellator Bullet, in the Celebrate The Life of Joe Newton Handicap.
The son of Saxon Warrior stayed on well to upset Sir Mark Prescott's 2-5 shot Analogical, with winning jockey Rowan Scott saying: 'When we turned in, he came alive and has seen out the trip really well.'
Despite a tardy start, Willolarupi, trained at Malton by Declan Carroll, came home well to under three-pound claimer Zak Wheatley in the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap (Division 2), denying Peter Niven's Sugar Baby a second successive Redcar win.
Wheatley said: 'If anything, he got there a bit too early in the end because he can be a bit quirky.'
The finale, the racingtv.com Handicap, was an exciting finish, with Faye McManoman landing the spoils by a neck on Nigel Tinkler's I Can Boogy from Tim Easterby's Perfidia, with the Ivan Furtado-trained We've Got This a nose away in third.
We've Got This was running in the colours of The Graham Lee Racing Club, run by The Good Racing Company, which has raised £40,000 for the jockey, who suffered life-changing injuries when he was unseated at Newcastle in November 2023.
Graham was guest of honour at Redcar – the first time he has visited a racecourse to see the club's colours in action – and there were touching scenes in the parade ring as members and well-wishers showed their support.
(Image: Peter Barron) Graham said: 'I'm very humbled by all the support I've had from The Good Racing Company and all the members.'
Former dual champion jockey Paul Hanagan, a director of The Good Racing Company, said: 'We've Got This has run a great race. She's still green but we're getting there, and it's meant a lot to Graham to be here in the sunshine.'

Cat Ferguson breaks new ground to take Tour of Britain lead after crash-packed stage

The 19-year-old Cat Ferguson prevailed in foul conditions at the finish to claim victory on a crash-packed stage three of the Women's Tour of Britain and with it the general classification lead. It was her first UCI Women's World Tour stage victory. Ferguson (Movistar) from Skipton, North Yorkshire, surged clear across the cobbles in Kelso to lead home a British one-two in front of Josie Nelson (Picnic-PostNL). New Zealand's Ally Wollaston (FDJ-Suez) finished third, with the Dutch rider Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ) in fourth. Wollaston trails by three seconds in the provisional general classification, with Swinkels a further nine seconds back, and Riejanne Markus (Lidl-Trek) fourth, 40 seconds behind Ferguson. The stage was marred by a number of crashes with several riders forced to abandon, among them previous race leader Kim Le Court. Advertisement 'This was one of the races I was most excited to do this season. I really wanted to come here in good form and show Britain how good I can be and I think I proved that,' said Ferguson. 'It's really emotional, even talking about it now. 'We worked well together as a group and I knew that if I positioned myself well into that final corner I could probably win the sprint. It was useful we'd done it before, in the intermediate sprint. I knew it was better to be second wheel and then launch first because you lose some momentum on the cobbles and it's hard to build it back up.' On the final stage Ferguson said: 'I'm a little bit nervous. It's going to be a rough night's sleep, I really want to hold on to this jersey. We'll see how it goes around the streets of Glasgow. I've raced there before and we've got a strong and motivated team. We'll do our best to defend it.'

Outdoor seawater swimming pool could get go-ahead

A campaign to create an outdoor tidal swimming pool in a coastal town could be given the go-ahead after being backed by councillors. The Scarborough Safe Sea Swimming Project was discussed by the Scarborough and Whitby Area Planning Committee of North Yorkshire Council at its meeting on Friday. The plan is to build a three-sided seawater pool at the Children's Corner, at the top of Scarborough South Bay, which would have sand running into it and a sheltered beach and bathing area for children. Councillor Rich Maw said that outdoor swimming in Scarborough was already "growing rapidly in popularity". He said: "This idea began in the simplest of ways – with a letter from two local sea swimmers who asked me, 'How do we build a swimming pool?' "That one question has grown into a meaningful conversation, and now, the foundations of a community-led and deliverable plan. "Scarborough's South and North Bays are already loved by sea swimmers year-round. Cold water swimming is growing rapidly in popularity and for good reason." He acknowledged that there were some risks to sea swimming, as "currents, and cold water shock make it inaccessible for many and potentially dangerous for some". The site at Children's Corner, which is located just south of the busy town centre beach and adjacent to the historic Scarborough Spa, was agreed as the preferred location by the Scarborough Sea Swimming Community Interest Company (CIC) andcouncil officers. A feasibility study was also presented to councillors, while campaigners who had initiated the project looked on from the public gallery above, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The study was commissioned by North Yorkshire Council and was completed by outdoor swimming specialists and architects Studio Octopi. Other committee members, including councillors Heather Phillips, Liz Colling and Roberta Swiers, also spoke in favour of the plan. According to All the Lidos, there are five other public outdoor swimming pools in Yorkshire, including Alpamare Waterpark in Scarborough's North Bay area. The feasibility study recommended the submission of a pre-planning application, "given the unique and rare nature of tidal pool projects". The Scarborough Sea Swimming CIC will now work through the next stages of development, but the committee said it was eager to assist the group if it could. RAF pilot's final flight after 45 years in the air

An RAF pilot has said he was "quite emotional" after making his final solo flight after a 45-year flying career which saw him amass about 16,000 hours in the air. Flt Lt Richard "Ricko" Offord, 64, from Richmond, North Yorkshire, first took to the skies for the air force in 1980 and has been based at RAF Leeming since 1998. During his career, he piloted several different models of fast jet and in 1995 was forced to eject from his Tornado F3 after a mid-air collision. Flt Lt Offord said he was "a bit sad" about his retirement, and was saluted by fire engines upon landing at RAF Leeming and surprised by colleagues, family and friends, but added: "I've had a pretty good innings." After his final flight, Flt Lt Offord, who is RAF Leeming's longest serving fast jet pilot, said: "I started flying fighters in 1982. It's quite a long time, so I'm not too upset." However, he said his time in the sky had not fully come to an end. "I'll carry on flying, but I can't do it in military planes," he explained. "You can only do it up to age 65, unfortunately, and I'm 65 on Tuesday, so this is it." Asked about any dramatic incidents during his long career, Flt Lt Offord said: "I was once knocked out and woke up on the ground in Lincolnshire. "We were doing air combat and I bumped into the other aircraft, so his tail and my wing came off. They don't fly very well without tails or wings." Pondering his lucky escape further, he added: "I didn't fly for a year due to back injuries, but all four of us ejected and everyone walked away, so that's the main thing." Speaking about the surprise welcoming committee and celebrations waiting for him after he landed for the final time in his Hawker Hunter at RAF Leeming, Flt Lt Offord said: "I had a little tear, to be fair." "I had no idea they were going to be here," he said. "The whole reception with mates and fire engines, it's made me a bit emotional."
