Govt seals Rs 1,982 crore deals for defence hardware to beef up Army's counter-terror capability
New Delhi: In a significant move to strengthen the Indian Army's operational readiness in counter-terrorism operations, the Ministry of Defence has concluded 13 contracts worth Rs 1,981.9 crore under the Emergency Procurement mechanism, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.
The key equipment being procured includes Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems, Low Level Lightweight Radars, Very Short Range Air Defence Systems and Remotely Piloted Aerial Vehicles.
Loitering Munitions, including Vertical Take-Off and Landing systems, various categories of drones, Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles, Night Sights for Rifles, Bullet Proof Jackets and Ballistic Helmets also form part of the list.
These contracts, amounting to Rs 1,981.90 crore, have been finalised against an overall sanctioned outlay of Rs 2,000 crore for the Indian Army.
Executed through fast-track procedures under the EP mandate, the procurement aims to enhance situational awareness, lethality, mobility, and protection for troops deployed in CT environments. The acquisitions were completed within compressed timelines to ensure rapid capability augmentation, according to the statement.
These procurements reflect the Ministry's commitment to equipping the Indian Army with modern, mission-critical, and completely indigenous systems to meet emerging security challenges. The emergency procurement route continues to be a key enabler in bridging urgent capability gaps and ensuring the timely induction of vital operational equipment, the statement added.
The acquisition comes in the backdrop of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir carried out by Pakistani terrorists in which 26 tourists were massacred. Investigations have revealed that the terrorists were Pakistani nationals, and one of them was a former army paracommando.
The backing of the Pakistani Army for terrorist activities was also very evident when the country's top military brass attended the funerals of terrorist leaders killed during Operation Sindoor.
After Pakistan carried out a barrage of drone strikes across the western border, India retaliated by striking its 11 airbases.

Citing a media report and voicing strong criticism on social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote, 'Sanskrit gets the crores; Tamil and other South Indian languages get nothing but crocodile tears.' The criticism follows a media report that quoted the reply to an RTI query, which said that the Union Government allocated Rs 2,532.59 crore between 2014-15 and 2024-25 for the promotion of Sanskrit. In contrast, a total of only Rs 147.56 crore was spent on all five other classical Indian languages combined--Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia--over the same period, claimed the report. MH Jawahirullah, the president of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), alleged that the funding disparity revealed a discriminatory and biased approach by the BJP-led Union Government and called for urgent corrective measures. He said, 'This amount is 17 times higher than the total funding of 147.56 crore allocated for all five other classical languages combined, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia, according to data obtained through an RTI query, as reported by an English daily. On average, Sanskrit has received 230.24 crore per year, whereas the other five classical languages have received only 13.41 crore per year on average, revealing the Union BJP government's discriminatory and biased approach.' He urged the Centre to provide equitable funding and fair recognition for Tamil and other classical languages. 'Recently, Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah stated in Madurai that Tamil is the 'best language in India'. But these statistics expose that such remarks are mere lip service without substance. I urge the Union Government to immediately provide due recognition, equitable funding, and developmental programs for Tamil and all other classical languages,' he said. (ANI)

Wi-Fi segment to be worth $22 billion by 2035 in India: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia
New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, in his keynote address at the World Wi-Fi Day Conference organised by the Broadband India Forum, stated that Wi-Fi will be a $22 billion segment in India by 2035, playing a transformative role in the nation's digital journey. Describing Wi-Fi as 'an invisible force capable of powering visible change,' Scindia hailed India's rapid strides in digital inclusion, noting that India now contributes 46 per cent of global digital transactions. He emphasised that connectivity is no longer a luxury, but a fundamental tool of empowerment, akin to access to capital and infrastructure in previous eras. 'Wi-Fi is not just about internet access; it's about widespread inclusion in India in the future. Every hotspot must become a hope spot,' said Scindia, outlining a vision for grassroots entrepreneurship driven by affordable devices, ubiquitous networks, and deregulated spectrum. He underscored Prime Minister Modi's vision behind PM-WANI (Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) as a game-changer that democratises digital access, especially in villages. Citing the success of India's low-cost data model, Rs 9 per GB compared to the global average of $2.49, he praised India's leadership in telecom affordability. Highlighting the recent de-licensing of the 6 GHz spectrum, the Minister said this move will enable multi-gigabit speeds and low-cost digital highways across India. Policy rules for the same will be announced before Independence Day 2025, he added. Scindia also called on industry stakeholders to innovate for affordable devices, ensuring that hardware does not become the next barrier to connectivity. 'Connectivity is not a commodity; it is an act of nation-building,' he concluded, urging collective commitment to light up every rural home, empower every aspiring mind, and fortify public services with the power of Wi-Fi. Karnataka MLA Raju Kage backs BR Patil's allegations of housing scam, says
Belagavi (Karnataka) [India], June 24 (ANI): The divisions in the Siddaramiah-led Karnataka government are now out in the open. Congress MLA Raju Kage on Tuesday slammed his government as he backed the allegations raised by party leader BR Patil regarding alleged irregularities in allotment of houses. Kage said that it 'wouldn't be surprising' if he resigns within 2 days. 'What BR Patil said is true... The same situation is being created for me too... It wouldn't be surprising if I submit my resignation to the CM in the next two days', Kage told ANI. He claimed that government officials are not working properly and that the administrative system in the state has failed. 'Officials are not working properly in our government. The Chief Minister's special grant has been sanctioned. Rs 25 crore was granted, but even after two years, the work order has not been issued. The administrative system in our state has completely failed. Because of this, I am deeply hurt. Even I am in a situation where I might resign,' he added. BR Patil had earlier levelled serious allegations against the Housing Board, stating that houses under the Rajiv Gandhi housing scheme are allotted only when bribes are paid. According to Patil, he is supposed to meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah tomorrow (June 25) after the latter invited him for a meeting, possibly to discuss the allegations raised. Patil acknowledged that it was his voice in the audio clip that went viral on social media, where a phone conversation purportedly between Patil and Sarfaraz Khan, the personal assistant (PA) to Karnataka Housing and Minority Welfare Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan, has brought the Congress government under fire due to allegations of irregularities in the housing allotment. 'The CM called me for a meeting. I will meet him on the evening of June 25. He asked me where I was and whether I was coming to Raichur. He asked me to meet him. He did not ask me anything about the audio. I have owned that it was my voice,' Patil told reporters here. Earlier today, another Congress MLA, Sivaganga Basavaraj, expressed dissatisfaction with the government, claiming that while thousands of crores of projects were inaugurated, the work is not being completed without bribes. He, however, did not agree with CR Patil publicly raising the issue, whereas it should have been done during the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meet. 'Thousands of crores of work have been launched in Davangere. It is not possible to launch the work without money, but everything is fine. Some elders have spoken; they should not have spoken to the media. all this can be discussed in the CLP meet,' the MLA said. Talking about the allegations raised by BR Patil, he added, 'They should not have spoken like that. They should speak during the CLP meeting. I have seen who does not speak at the CLP meeting. They sit quietly in the meeting and speak against the government in the media outside.' (ANI)
