Hammondsport and Urbana to receive $4.5m in community development funding
HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (WETM) — Two municipalities in Steuben County were awarded millions in funding to help better the communities as part of the NY Forward Projects initiative, according to a release from Governor Kathy Hochul's Office.
The Village of Hammondsport and the Town of Urbana are set to receive $4.5 million in total funding for six projects designed to uplift the community and local economies.
The projects are six out of 31 happening across the state and are part of two programs, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and NY Forward.
'From revitalizing historic landmarks to expanding housing and creating new civic spaces, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward are driving smart, including growth to the Southern Tier,' Governor Hochul said.
The town and village were awarded the funding after being recognized for having a strong sense of community and rich history in areas like winemaking while having a unique blend of scenic beauty and local character.
Millport to receive state aid to strengthen water infrastructure
The following projects were listed for Hammondsport and Urbana as NY Forward Projects:
Reconstruct Liberty Street and Mill Street in Hammondsport to be pedestrian-friendly and improve existing drainage issues. ($1,606,000)
Replace Champlin Beach Pier to increase access to Keuka Lake. ($1,357,000)
Renovate the historic Curtiss School into rental housing and multi-purpose community space. ($885,000)
Create a branding and marketing plan and a historic heritage trail with wayfinding signage. ($362,000)
Establish a bike-friendly neighborhood coffee shop and cafe at a former service station. ($172,000)
Renovate 31 Shethar St. to include additional means of egress to support a restaurant and bar on the lower level. ($118,000)
The NY Forward Program was part of the 2022 state budget as a way to build on the momentum created by the DRI. The program works with smaller communities to accelerate and expand the revitalization of smaller and rural downtowns in the state.
Urbana Town Supervisor, David Durepo, is thankful for the support and is hoping to attract new people to the town.
'The New York Forward projects bring a major economic support to Urbana's business community that is reinvigorating a new area to attract customers and families alike,' he said. 'We thank Governor Hochul for her great vision in revitalizing downtown areas in the state that will lead Urbana to become a thriving community for our residents, businesses, and visitors,' Durepo said.

Alstom opens $75m manufacturing plant in Hornell, New York
French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom has unveiled a new Plant 4 manufacturing facility in Hornell, New York, US. Alstom has invested $75m in the new facility, which will produce stainless steel car body shells for passenger rail vehicles. Spanning 12,542sqm, the site will further enhance the firm's manufacturing capabilities to support other initiatives. The investment in Plant 4 will relocate production from Brazil to the US, reaffirming New York's Southern Tier as the epicentre for rail innovation. Furthermore, it will also boost domestic supply chains within the US rail industry. Initially, the new site will begin production on 200 multilevel commuter rail cars for Chicago's Metra system. The new facility will create 258 new jobs, including those in mechatronics engineering and robotics-related fields. It will also help retain 390 existing jobs in Hornell. Alstom received $3.4m in federal funding for the expansion. Additionally, it received grants, job credits and tax credit programs from agencies including the New York Empire State Development, the US Economic Development Administration, City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency, the US Department of Treasury CDFI Fund, US Department of Housing and Urban Development, New York State Electric & Gas, and the US Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. Michael Keroulle, president of Alstom Americas, thanked New York Governor Kathy Hochul and the state, local and federal partners for their support. 'Plant 4 upholds our commitment to making trains in America, also expanding our ability to deliver rail solutions,' he added. Congressman Nick Langworthy expressed his gratitude towards Alstom for its investment boost in the region. 'The Southern Tier is the capital of rail car and train manufacturing, and this investment is a critical next step in continuing this legacy,' he added. Chemung County Sheriff's Office invites local businesses to sign up for emergency contact program
CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — Businesses in Chemung County now have the opportunity to proactively help their establishments when it comes to the event of a potential emergency, according to a release from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday. Announced in a release on Wednesday, June 4, the Chemung County Sheriff's Office explained that businesses in Chemung County are invited to sign up for a program that helps county emergency officials get in touch with said places when it comes to a possible emergency. Sign ups open for Firefighter Experience Camp in Corning The key manager, and/or the person responsible for managing critical things at local businesses in Chemung County, has an opportunity to register their establishment's name and contact information with the Chemung County Communications Office. The release said that if people decide to sign up, this would help the county emergency crews contact the person in charge of a business that may have experienced a fire, break-in, or any other emergency. People can access the form on the sheriff's office's website or its app, the release said. People must fill out the 'Business Contact Form' and either mail it to the sheriff's office at 203 William Street, P.O. Box 588, Elmira, NY 14902, or submit it via fax. Wisner Market kicks off first day in Elmira
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The Wisner Market in downtown Elmira launched its first day of the season and was held on a Wednesday for the first time in more than 25 years. The market schedule was moved from Thursday to Wednesday to allow more vendors to be featured at both Wisner and the Corning Farmers Markets. A couple of first-time vendors at the Wisner Market expressed how the change could allow more foot traffic and believe it will benefit both markets' opportunities to attract visitors. 'I do like it having it on Wednesday because it gives us an opportunity and more people can come in down in Elmira,' said Leon Jones. 'It's a great day and it helps us to get together on Wednesday when we don't have to worry about Thursday.' Elmira's Wisner Market changes schedule for 2025 season Another vendor Paul Marcellus added, 'I like that the management has decided to make a change, you know, hopefully it'll be for the better, and judging by the number of vendors and the people that have turned out, it's going to work.' Julie Delgrosso said how she felt unsure about the change but was amazed by the variety of food trucks and vendors that showed up. 'There's certainly more vendors than what I've seen in the past, not just food vendors but also craft vendors and gift vendors as well so that's going to be a lot more fun going through the booths this year compared to other years,' Delgrosso said. 'We hope they all do well.' The Chemung County Department of Veteran Affairs is also distributing $17 worth of vouchers such as the ones in the image above to veterans, widows, and widowers to spend at the market. People are required to provide proof of service to receive them (i.e. DoD Card, a VA Health Care Card or a DD-214 form). Last day of Wisner Market in downtown Elmira The Wisner Market is scheduled to run every Wednesday until Sept. 24.
