Hammondsport and Urbana to receive $4.5m in community development funding
HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (WETM) — Two municipalities in Steuben County were awarded millions in funding to help better the communities as part of the NY Forward Projects initiative, according to a release from Governor Kathy Hochul's Office. The Village of Hammondsport and the Town of Urbana are set to receive $4.5 million in total funding for six projects designed to uplift the community and local economies. The projects are six out of 31 happening across the state and are part of two programs, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and NY Forward. 'From revitalizing historic landmarks to expanding housing and creating new civic spaces, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward are driving smart, including growth to the Southern Tier,' Governor Hochul said. The town and village were awarded the funding after being recognized for having a strong sense of community and rich history in areas like winemaking while having a unique blend of scenic beauty and local character. Millport to receive state aid to strengthen water infrastructure The following projects were listed for Hammondsport and Urbana as NY Forward Projects: Reconstruct Liberty Street and Mill Street in Hammondsport to be pedestrian-friendly and improve existing drainage issues. ($1,606,000) Replace Champlin Beach Pier to increase access to Keuka Lake. ($1,357,000) Renovate the historic Curtiss School into rental housing and multi-purpose community space. ($885,000) Create a branding and marketing plan and a historic heritage trail with wayfinding signage. ($362,000) Establish a bike-friendly neighborhood coffee shop and cafe at a former service station. ($172,000) Renovate 31 Shethar St. to include additional means of egress to support a restaurant and bar on the lower level. ($118,000) The NY Forward Program was part of the 2022 state budget as a way to build on the momentum created by the DRI. The program works with smaller communities to accelerate and expand the revitalization of smaller and rural downtowns in the state. Urbana Town Supervisor, David Durepo, is thankful for the support and is hoping to attract new people to the town. 'The New York Forward projects bring a major economic support to Urbana's business community that is reinvigorating a new area to attract customers and families alike,' he said. 'We thank Governor Hochul for her great vision in revitalizing downtown areas in the state that will lead Urbana to become a thriving community for our residents, businesses, and visitors,' Durepo said. Gouverneur gets $4.5 million in NY Forward funds
GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (WWTI) – The village of Gouverneur will be getting a boost from New York State to invest in its historic downtown area. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the Village of Gouverneur will each receive $4.5 million as one of the North Country winners of the third round of NY Forward. For the eighth round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and the third round of the NY Forward Program, each of the State's 10 economic development regions are being awarded $10 million from each program, to make for a total state commitment of $200 million in funding and investments to help communities boost their economies by transforming downtowns into vibrant neighborhoods. American Red Cross aids one person after Massena fire According to the state, 'Gouverneur will capitalize on its historical charm, vibrant and expanding downtown business community, safe, friendly, and walkable environment and its proximity to major regional employers to enhance quality of life, strengthen resilience and increase economic opportunities for both current and future residents. Additionally, Gouverneur aims to attract visitors to experience its rich recreational, cultural and retail assets, positioning the village as a regional destination.' Gouverneur Mayor Ron McDougall In the press announcement from the governor's office, the village was called 'is a charming historic community located along the Oswegatchie River. The Village embodies the feel of community with a beautiful downtown and park area. The Village is home to many festivals and events, including the St. Lawrence County Fair, that entertains residents and attracts visitors from across the region. 'Gouverneur is a true treasure to the 117th Assembly District,' Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush said. 'I always like to see NYS invest in our rural villages. When you invest in downtowns you invest in small businesses and residents. I am always in support of that.' Malone and Keeseville were also winners of the latest round with Malone getting $10 million and Keeseville receiving $4.5 milllion. The three municipalities will now start the process of developing a Strategic Investment Plan to revitalize their downtowns. A Local Planning Committee made up of municipal representatives, community leaders and other stakeholders will lead the effort, supported by a team of private sector experts and state planners. The Strategic Investment Plan will guide the investment of DRI and NY Forward grant funds in revitalization projects that are poised for implementation, will advance the community's vision for their downtown and that can leverage and expand upon the state's investment. The North Country Regional Economic Development Council conducted a thorough and competitive review process of proposals submitted from communities throughout the region and considered all criteria before recommending these communities as nominees. Corning receives $480,000 for wastewater treatment plant
CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) — The City of Corning will soon be able to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant thanks to a grant for nearly half of a million dollars. Congressman Nick Langworthy announced that the City of Corning was awarded $480,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency to modernize its wastewater treatment plant. According to Langworthy, the money will be used to upgrade the plant so it meets discharge regulations, community resilience, and sustainability practices. Village of Bath to receive funding through NY Forward Program 'The City of Corning's wastewater treatment plant has been in need of upgrades for some time,' said Langworthy in his statement announcing the grant. The tax-funded grant was awarded through the 2022 Consolidated Appropriations Act, and Langworthy's predecessor put the funding request in for Corning in 2022. Village of Bath to receive funding through NY Forward Program

(WETM) – The Village of Bath has been awarded funding through Round 3 of the NY Forward Program, which aims to help communities in New York State boost local economy by building a lively downtown neighborhood. On Thursday, Feb. 27, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Village of Bath, amongst other municipalities, is receiving funding from the state as a part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward Program. Corning's Gaffer District announces executive director's retirement The Village of Bath will receive $4.5 million in funding for the village's Liberty Street Historic District revitalization, which seeks to support growth by creating an active downtown community. With the provided funds, the village will work to create growth by building an active downtown with enhanced public spaces, strategic placement of amenities and new housing opportunities that will attract visitors. Steuben County Clerk launches alert system to prevent deed fraud Each of New York State's 10 economic development regions is being awarded $10 million from each program for a total state commitment of $200 million in funding and investments to the initiative. To receive funding from either DRI or the NY Forward Program, the region must be certified under Governor Hochul's Pro-Housing Communities Program, which allocates $650 million each year in discretionary funds for communities that agree to increase housing supply. Canandaigua, Brockport & Phelps receive millions for downtown revitalization
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The winners of the Finger Lakes Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward Program have been revealed! Canandaigua will be receiving $10 million after becoming the Finger Lakes winner in the eighth round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The villages of Brockport and Phelps were also winners of NY Forward's third round and will receive $4.5 million each. According to NYS, the City of Canandaigua received the $10 million as it became more of a 'residential and recreational hub of the Finger Lakes region.' The state cites its focus on the semiconductor industry as a major reason for the award. 'I look forward to seeing the projects we supported in our DRI proposal unlock opportunities that create new jobs, add housing, and public amenities in our downtown,' said Canandaigua Mayor Bob Palumbo. Brockport received its funding for being a 'thriving and culturally rich future for the region' and its efforts to transform its downtown into a tourist attraction. As for Phelps, it is focusing on its streetscaping and aesthetic upgrades. The Brockport of our NY Forward dreams is one that works for all – young, old, university student, resident, visitor, tourist. The water brings people, Brockporters say, and we will invest in our waterfront to establish Brockport as the premier, inclusive recreation community on the Erie Canal,' said Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman. 'What I'm especially proud of today is that 6 people, including our grant writer, crafted a successful proposal, in-house, in 2 short years.' 'This investment by the state will help push us over the top in our revitalization efforts,' said Phelps Mayor Jim Cheney. 'It is important for small communities, such as the Village of Phelps, to receive statewide taxpayer support such as this, to revitalize and thrive.'
