Police investigate shooting at Northland KC apartment after man dies at hospital
Police are investigating a shooting that killed one man in Kansas City's Cooley Highlands neighborhood Saturday morning.
Officers responded just after 11 a.m. to the 3000 block of Northeast 37th Street after a call about the sound of gunfire.
While officers were on their way to the scene, they were notified that a man arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds, said Jake Becchina, a Kansas City Police Department spokesman. Hospital staff told police the man was dropped off in a private vehicle and left there by himself.
A short time later, the man died at the hospital from his injuries, Becchina said.
Police have not yet publicly identified the man.
Officers later found evidence that a shooting likely occurred inside an apartment building on 37th Street, Becchina said.
Detectives have been canvassing the Northland neighborhood for witnesses and processing the scene for evidence.
The killing is Kansas City's 70th homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 67 homicides.
Becchina said KCPD is asking for the public's help with information about the shooting.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call homicide unit detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.

Former NFL player Kelvin Joseph facing charges after crash that killed motorcyclist
DALLAS — Former NFL player Kelvin Joseph is facing charges for his involvement in a crash that killed a female motorcyclist on a Dallas-area freeway, The Dallas Morning News reported. Police in the Dallas suburb of Richardson said on social media that Joseph, who has been playing in the United Football League this spring, called police in Plano, another Dallas suburb, to report his involvement in the predawn crash Saturday. The 25-year-old Joseph, who was driving a BMW, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and collision involving personal injury or death, a second-degree felony. Police said 27-year-old Cody Morris of Plano was killed in the crash. Joseph was drafted by the Cowboys in 2021 and spent two seasons with them before he was traded to Miami. He also played briefly for Seattle and Indianapolis. The cornerback has been playing for the DC Defenders, who were set to play in a UFL conference championship game Sunday. The UFL said in a statement sent to Dallas TV station WFAA that it was aware of Joseph's arrest, but declined further comment. During the 2022 offseason with the Cowboys, Joseph was the passenger in an SUV from which two people fired shots into a group of men in Dallas, fatally striking one of the men in the head. Police concluded Joseph wasn't the shooter, and the NFL didn't suspend him. An attorney who previously represented Joseph didn't return a phone call from The Dallas Morning News. It wasn't immediately clear whether Joseph had an attorney following his arrest Saturday. ___ AP NFL:

Lithium-Ion batteries cause fire in Hernando County home: HCFR
BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — A fire broke out in a Brooksville residence Saturday afternoon after lithium-ion batteries were left charging inside the home. Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to the 800 block of Live Oak Drive to find smoke billowing out from the front door. Two people were inside the home at the time but escaped safely with no injuries. As an important safety reminder, continuously charging lithium-ion batteries can cause the battery to fail, which creates a very deadly gas release that can not only incapacitate people but also overheat and spontaneously catch fire.
