What did Trump say about Sydney Sweeney/American Eagle backlash?
Trump addresses Diddy pardon decision, but questions remain
Trump said that "advertising's a very funny thing," telling Finnerty that "I've done ads where I thought they were lousy, and they turned out to be iconic. And then I've done some that I thought were beauties that were going to be fantastic and they weren't so good, so to each his own."
Before addressing his thoughts on advertising, Trump told the conservative cable host earlier in the interview that "I think the Dylan Mulvaney ad was perhaps the most unsuccessful ad in history. It knocked $35 billion off the value of a certain company if you know what I'm talking about."
Trump continued: "(The Mulvaney ad) was one of the great disasters of all time. I would say that's probably the most unsuccessful ad, worst ad ever."
It is unclear what exact $35 billion valuation the president is talking about, but sales for Bud Light - owned by Anheuser-Busch - tanked after the backlash began.
American Eagle breaks silence on Sydney Sweeney jeans ad controversy
Why is the 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans' ad sparking backlash?
The Sweeney ad has been the subject of both online praise and anger for over a week. On July 23, the brand launched the new campaign starring Sweeney, which American Eagle originally described as "a return to essential denim dressing," with Sweeney sporting 1970s-style flare jeans paired with a denim jacket.
In one of several videos for the campaign, Sweeney, clad in a denim-on-denim fit, dabbles in some word-play, telling cameras: "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color." "My jeans are blue," Sweeney said in the video.
Each promotional video ends with the tagline, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans." The Trump comments aired the same day that American Eagle broke its silence on the backlash and doubled down in an Instagram post following days of discourse about the Sweeney ad blitz.
"'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way," the statement read. "Great jeans look good on everyone."

Spice Girl Mel B celebrates marriage with ‘spiritual' ceremony in Morocco
It comes after the 50-year-old, whose real name is Melanie Brown, married hairdresser Rory McPhee at St Paul's Cathedral in July, having announced their engagement in October 2022. In a post on Instagram, Brown said: 'We got married, again! 'A wedding so good we keep the celebration going with our closest and dearest in our fave place at @selmanmarrakech we had the time of our lives.' A post shared by 'scary spice Mel B' (@officialmelb) The singer wore a red dress with crystals and bugle beads made in a collaboration between Evelie Bridal and wedding dress designer Justin Alexander at the ceremony at the Selman Hotel on Saturday. Her choice of dress was guided by Caroline Black from London-based Evelie Bridal, who aimed to reflect her life in the US, where she is a judge on America's Got Talent. Black told the PA news agency: 'For Mel's Morocco wedding dress, we focused on trying Justin Alexander gowns with a little extra sparkle. 'Mel loved the idea of a red dress — something bold, with lots and lots of shimmer — but it also had to feel light and easy to move in. 'We drew inspiration from a variety of dresses she tried on at Evelie South Kensington, then went back and forth brainstorming with Justin Alexander and his design team. 'After several conversations and sketches, the first design took shape. Mel gave us clear feedback on what she liked and what she didn't, and the final result was beautiful. 'Mel had such a strong sense of what she wanted — it was a joy working with her and Justin Alexander to bring her vision to life.' The dress required a team of six artisans and took more than 850 hours to complete. Her husband wore an Alexander McQueen outfit featuring a white shirt and jacket with black trousers and shoes. The London wedding saw Brown joined by guests including bandmate Emma Bunton, model Daisy Lowe, and comedians Tom Allen and Katherine Ryan. The singer was previously married to Stephen Belafonte until she filed for divorce in 2017 following allegations of abuse. They have a daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte. Brown also has two daughters, Phoenix Chi Gulzar and Angel Iris Murphy Brown, from two previous relationships. With the Spice Girls, the singer had nine UK number one singles and two UK number one albums. The group was best known for songs such as Wannabe, 2 Become 1 and Who Do You Think You Are?.

Bill Maher tears apart 'online social justice girls' trying to end Sydney Sweeney's career over 'great jeans' advert
Comedian Bill Maher mocked 'online social justice girls' in a blistering monologue slamming criticisms of Sydney Sweeney 's new 'great jeans' advert. The talk show host waded into the controversy surrounding the actress in his latest episode of 'Real Time', slamming liberals for overreacting to Sweeney's new advertising campaign for American Eagle jeans. Sweeney made a pun about her 'good genes/jeans' in the promo, which created a media firestorm as some accused the clothing company of suggesting that Sweeney's 'good genes' was her whiteness. But Maher disagreed, saying in his monologue: 'She talks about the fact that she has blue eyes, and then she says, 'I have great jeans'... Ya know, because she's wearing jeans.' 'According to the woke people - this means that she's a white supremacist,' Maher continued. 'It also doesn't help that her bra size is 36KKK.' The comedian confessed that the marketing team at American Eagle 'should've been aware' when they wrote the ad that backlash could ensue, but argued that the company 'didn't do it on purpose.' Maher also didn't hesitate to take shots at 'online social justice girls' who believed there was 'no such thing as good genes.' Maher defended the ad as a play on words for 'jeans/genes' and mocked 'online social justice girls' as hypocrites for criticizing Sweeney 'Right - and then you go on Tinder and swipe left on every bald guy,' Maher said sarcastically. 'America,' he concluded with an exacerbated sigh. The segment went viral on social media, with many praising Maher's candor, while others claimed the comedian went too far. 'Hahahaha. He nails this one,' one social media user commented on X. 'Okay that was funny,' another confessed. 'I don't find that funny at all. It's rather crude and creepy to be honest,' a third added. 'Bill Maher's got some fire in his belly tonight, and I'm here for it. The woke mob needs a good roasting every now and then. But let's be real, 36 KKK? That's just low,' a fourth commented. Sweeney's American Eagle ad became the viral story of the week, creating a worldwide debate over the nuances behind the phrase, 'great genes.' In a video advertisement for the campaign, the camera pans close to Sweeney as she buttons up her American Eagle jeans. 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color… my genes are blue,' Sweeney says before looking to the camera. She continues: 'My body's composition is determined by my genes...' before exclaiming: 'Hey, eyes up here' as the camera cuts back to her face. Critics of the ad pointed to the historic connotation behind the phrase, linking 'great genes' to celebrating whiteness, thinness, and conventional attractiveness, a report in Salon argued. The company responded to the backlash with a statement that read: '"Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans" is and always was about the jeans'. 'Her jeans. her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone'. Sweeney has yet to comment on the controversy, but shared a cryptic post on Instagram of a photo of pink roses with a white heart sticker.

Lions star Bundee Aki reveals he missed arrival of his daughter during Australia tour after wife gave birth in a CAR
Aki admitted he played poorly in the defeat to Australia YOU'RE KIDDING Lions star Bundee Aki reveals he missed arrival of his daughter during Australia tour after wife gave birth in a CAR Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BUNDEE AKI has revealed he became a dad again during the Lions' series win in Australia — with his wife giving birth in a car. The Irish centre held his hands up on his shocker in Sydney on Saturday in a 22-12 defeat, which saw the tourists miss the chance of a Wallaby whitewash. 3 Bundee Aki's wife has given birth to a daughter Credit: Instagram 3 Aki now has five children Credit: Instagram After the Lions failed to clinch a series clean sweep, Aki then announced he had become a father for the fifth time two weeks ago. The 35-year-old has yet to meet new daughter Aine, who was born in the build-up to the opening Test win in Brisbane. Wife Kayla was in New Zealand with family when she got in touch to say she was ready to give birth before he helped the Lions to a 27-19 triumph. Aki recalled: 'Credit to my wife. She's a powerful woman. I was in the hotel in Brisbane and I knew we were overdue. 'Ten minutes later, she video calls me and I was like, 'S**t, what's going on?' I saw a baby on the video call, so she had it in the car. 'They're both healthy. But their old man admitted he put in nothing close to an A-star performance in Sydney as the Lions were mauled in a monsoon. The game was suspended after half-time for 38 minutes due to lightning, with the Aussies 8-0 up through Dylan Pietsch's try and a penalty. Finn Russell was spotted in the dressing room flicking through his phone and Aki had his feet up on a bean bag before play resumed. But the Wallabies struck twice after the delay to get the victory. Aki had his worst game in an international shirt but fronted up. He said: 'I wasn't great. It was a poor game but you have those days and you have to live with it. 'We won the series and that's all we came for. 'Now, I want to enjoy my break. I haven't seen my family for eight weeks. I have a newborn child I haven't met yet.' Australia got it over the line thanks to a turbo-charged display from lock Will Skelton, who was on the wind-up all match, and second-half tries from Max Jorgensen and Tate McDermott. Jac Morgan and Will Stuart crossed to give the Lions some consolation — but Skelton had shown the Aussies the way. Wallabies scrum-half Nic White said: 'For once, someone stood up to them.'
