Artist Azza Al Qubaisi: Liwa Date Festival is an opportunity to reconnect with UAE heritage
MAYS IBRAHIM (LIWA CITY)For visual artist and designer Azza Al Qubaisi, the Liwa Date Festival is more than a harvest celebration; it is a conscious act of cultural preservation and remembrance. For over two decades, she has returned, blending desert stories, ancestral echoes and modern artistry into works that speak of who she is and where she comes from.Originally from Al Qutuf, Al Dhafra, Al-Qubaisi views the festival as an opportunity to reconnect with her heritage and to reflect the evolving identity of the UAE through her contemporary artistic creations.
"This festival is not about selling or marketing my products," she told Aletihad. "It is about saying I belong. I am here to present my identity."
At this year's festival, Al Qubaisi is exhibiting a range of works that fuse traditional Emirati elements with modern design. Among them are chairs made from palm fronds, artistic pieces inspired by the desert landscape, and silver and gold accessories shaped like the Emirati burqa, traditionally worn by women in the region.A highlight of her exhibit is the design of the festival's award trophies, which incorporate palm frond motifs and, for the first time this year, feature one of Liwa's iconic castles. She also designed the rutab (fresh date) hangers used across the festival – pieces that turn functional objects into cultural statements."I don't like to see things without design and intention," she said. "We have a wealth of ideas and creativity. I like to make sure our traditional motifs are part of our everyday experiences."Al Qubaisi's work is inspired by the UAE's Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's words: "A nation without a past is a nation without a present or a future." She channels this philosophy into each of her creations, transforming heritage elements into pieces that are both visually compelling and culturally significant."My goal is to reflect my identity through my artworks, and at the same time present and preserve it for the future," she said. "A simple object like a hanger can become a visual connection for children, something that carries emotion, history and identity."Arabic calligraphy is another signature feature of Al Qubaisi's work. By incorporating letters into her designs, she hopes to inspire a renewed appreciation for the Arabic language among younger generations.All of her pieces are produced locally, and collaboration remains central to her artistic philosophy. This year, she is working with fellow Emirati artist Moosa Al Halyan, who contributed illustrations on palm stalks for a joint exhibition."I always try to move away from 'me' and focus on 'we.' Collaborating with other artists helps develop the local artistic experience and contributes to a shared cultural vision," she said.
"As individuals and institutions, we must give and create together."

Cultural diplomacy through poetry Ambassador Hamdan Al Naqbi emphasised the strong bilateral ties between the UAE and Senegal, noting that events such as this poetry forum are genuine bridges for cultural cooperation. He commended Sharjah's civilisational initiatives and their role in advancing the Arabic language in Africa. Strategic partnership with Sharjah Dr Fadhel Ghay, President of the Senegalese Literary Club, voiced his pride in hosting such an important event, especially one connected with Sharjah, the Capital of Culture. He praised the participating poets and underlined the importance of strategic partnerships with Sharjah in ensuring the forum's success. More than a celebration of language Several participants viewed the forum not just as a celebration of Arabic but as a powerful African cultural platform. They praised Arabic's ability to reflect reality, express thought, and radiate beauty, noting that such initiatives significantly uplift the cultural landscape of the continent. The poetry readings offered a heartfelt glimpse into the poets' emotions and patriotism. The verses touched on personal and collective struggles, love for the homeland, and attachment to identity. Together, the poets created a vivid tapestry of hope and belonging that deeply moved the audience. Poetic voices united by hope and love The forum opened with an emotionally rich atmosphere, where poets of various backgrounds came together. Their poems were infused with hope and affection, underscoring poetry's role in renewing cultural thinking and strengthening human ties. Female voices were notably present and powerful at the forum. Through tender and profound poems, women poets addressed themes of self and reality with emotional depth. Their participation added a distinct aesthetic to the evening and highlighted the richness of the poetic experience in Senegal. The Summer Camp is designed to deliver an immersive reading experience, centering on one selected story per library, and will be deeply explored over the four-day agenda. The programme features two captivating daily activities that will cover the story's characters, narrative, and valuable lessons. Lyrical documentary ‘From Abdul to Leila' to screen in Berlin
The film traces Leila, a French-Iraqi woman, who after an accident and years in exile, reconnects with her dissident father by learning Arabic and singing her story. French-Iraqi musician and filmmaker Leila Albayaty will present her lyrical documentary From Abdul to Leila at a special screening in Berlin on July 22 at 7 PM, hosted at Divan (Arabic Kulturhaus). The event will be followed by an exclusive Q&A session with the director herself. The deeply personal film traces Albayaty's search for her lost Arabic identity, a journey set in motion by music passed down from her Iraqi father, Abdul. After surviving a traumatic accident that left her with memory loss and enduring years of exile, Leila returns to her family home in the south of France. There, she confronts both her father's past, marked by the Iraq war, and her own fragmented identity. Determined to understand where she comes from, she begins learning Arabic and sets to music the poems Abdul once wrote for her. Through this act of artistic and linguistic reconnection, long-buried memories begin to resurface. From Abdul to Leila follows the emotional and physical odyssey of a woman who reclaims her story through music. As Leila travels from France to Iraq and Cairo, the narrative unfolds through intimate moments, blending documentary realism with poetic musicality. The film reveals her evolving relationship with her father, her struggle to overcome personal trauma, and her growing love for the Arabic language and culture. The documentary has already received critical acclaim, winning the Best Documentary Award at the Arab Film Festival Rotterdam and the Annual Aarhus Film Festival in Denmark, along with the Grand Jury Prize at the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival. The film was made possible with support from several cultural institutions, including Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM), the Centre du cinéma et de l'audiovisuel de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), the Doha Film Institute, Filmkunstering, the Goethe Institute of Cairo, and the French Institute of Tunis.
