‘Mapping Memories' exhibition to begin today
Opening on August 9 at 4 PM at Lalit Kala Akademi, Egmore, the exhibition brings together works by both emerging and established artists, offering a rare confluence of perspectives, mediums, and stories. Spanning paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations, Mapping Memories is a layered exploration of how personal recollections and collective histories shape the urban landscapes we call home.
'The artworks on display weave together personal and collective narratives, revealing the complex textures of life. From the nostalgia of forgotten places to the vibrancy of everyday experiences, the artists capture this essence and the memories that define it,' says, Upasana Asrani, Founder of Madras Art Weekend. She has also curated the exhibition, along with Pinky Jain.
Chess Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand and Inspector General of Police, Chennai, A. Kayalvizhi will be the chief guests for the exhibit. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the exhibition stands as an important platform for underrepresented artists, amplifying voices that often go unheard in the mainstream art world. In doing so, Mapping Memories also mirrors the mission of Made of Chennai - to chronicle and celebrate the many layers of the city's identity.
The exhibition will run until August 14, open daily from 11 AM to 7 PM.

Get your copy of The Hindu's rare 1947 Independence Day edition
On the morning of August 15, 1947, India awoke to freedom — and to the pages of a newspaper that captured the moment in ink. That day's edition of The Hindu was more than a record of events; it was a mosaic of voices, from leaders and freedom fighters to ordinary citizens and businesses, each marking the birth of a nation in their own words. This year, to mark the 78th anniversary of Independence, The Hindu is making that historic edition available once again. A faithful reprint of all 32 pages, exactly as they appeared on that first day of a free India. Every headline, every message, every advertisement appears just as it did in 1947, preserving not only the news of the day but the spirit with which it was shared. The edition contains Independence Day greetings from national and international leaders, like Lord and Lady Mountbatten, Sardar Patel, Babu Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru and C Rajagopalachari. Reports detail how the first Independence Day was celebrated across the country, from official events to local gatherings, including flag hoisting ceremonies, processions, and speeches that drew thousands into the streets. A centre spread brings together rare photographs tracing the journey from the struggle for freedom to the years of progress that followed. Advertisements from brands like Tata Industries, the India Electric Works, Bosotto Hotel, Colgate, Amrutanjan, Philips, Hind Cycles and several others pledge their commitment to the new nation, with messages of hope and service. A small announcement notes legendary singer late M S Subbulakshmi's special Independence Day performance on All India Radio. It is one of many details tucked into the pages that reward close reading. From railway timetables, to classifieds offering everything from typewriters to fountain pens, these advertisements, and announcements offer moments of quiet amusement and nostalgia. Only 5,000 copies of this collector's edition will be available. Priced at ₹500 each, it will be printed in the newspaper's current size. It can be purchased exclusively on Blinkit in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai from August 14, until stocks last.

Madras High Court backs Rajinikanth's Coolie in fight against potential leak and piracy; directs BSNL, Airtel, Jio to block websites streaming pirated copies
With just hours remaining for the first-day-first-show (FDFS) of director Lokesh Kanagaraj's Rajinikanth-led Coolie, one of the most anticipated Indian movies of the year, a 'Thalaivar fever' has gripped the country, and fans are all set to mark the occasion with customary excitement. Given that Coolie marks the first collaboration between one of the biggest stars in the country and one of the most successful filmmakers in contemporary Indian cinema, audience expectations are at an all-time high. In fact, the makers have already managed to ensure that the massive hype translates into box office business, with Coolie clocking far better advance booking figures compared to Rajinikanth's most recent films. As of 1 pm on Wednesday, the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial's advance booking gross stands at Rs 28.4 crore (Rs 37.31 crore including block seats), compared to Vettaiyan's (2024) Rs 15.22 crore, Jailer's (2023) Rs 18.24 crore, Annaatthe's (2021) Rs 23.25 crore and Darbar's (2020) Rs 23.7 crore. Thus, it is almost certain that the movie will deliver Rajinikanth's highest opening day collection. Now it remains to be seen if Coolie will be able to break the release day record set by 'Thalapathy' Vijay's Leo (2023), helmed by Lokesh himself, which opened to a thunderous Rs 148 crore worldwide. Meanwhile, production house Sun Pictures has gone all out to ensure that nothing impedes the expected smashing run of the big-budget actioner at the box office. Recently, it moved the Madras High Court as a precautionary measure to safeguard the movie from piracy. On Monday, The Hindu reported, the HC passed an order restraining 36 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) located across the country from permitting 'rogue websites' to stream pirated versions of the film. The ex-parte injunction was granted against ISPs like Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Bharti Airtel, Tata Communications, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communication, among others. It has mandated ISPs to prevent copyright infringement of the movie by blocking not only existing websites but also any future sites that might stream pirated versions of Coolie. The production company has also procured a similar order against five cable television networks. Also starring Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan and Sathyaraj, as well as Aamir Khan in a cameo role, Coolie boasts music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj. The movie will hit the screens on August 14.
