Saina Nehwal confirms split from husband Parupalli Kashyap, says 'Life takes us in different directions'
New Delhi: Olympian bronze medallist Saina Nehwal declared separation with husband Parupalli Kashyap on Sunday. The 2012 London Olympic medalist shared the news on social media.
'Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We're choosing peace, growth, and healing – for ourselves and each other. I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time,' Saina wrote on her Instagram story.
Saina and Kashyap got married in 2018.
Saina and Parupalli trained at Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad. Whereas Saina gained fame and popularity with her fantastic game and Olympic bronze Parupalli found his way of getting it by winning the gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
She was the second Indian Woman to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari.
Saina in 2015 created history as she became the first Indian woman who achieved World no.1 ranking in women singles badminton.
There is still no official statement by Parupalli concerning the separation.
In 2024 Saina had revealed that she was battling arthritis and would shortly have to give a call on the future of her badminton career.
'The knee is not very good. I have arthritis. My cartilage has gone to a bad state. It is very difficult to push for eight-nine hours,' Said Nehwal on the 'House of Glory' podcast by great Gagan Narang, who was India's chef-de-mission in Paris Olympics 2024.
'How will you challenge the best players in the world in such a state? I think I will have to accept it somewhere. Because two hours of training is not good enough to play with the highest level of players and get the desired results,' she added.

England's cricket captain forgot the rules, was churlish, but some Indian fans read too much into it In The Godfather, Don Corleone famously talks about an offer the other side cannot refuse. In the fading lights of Manchester, Ben Stokes made a cricket's version of that offer. The England skipper wanted to 'declare' India's innings. But the cessation of a Test cannot depend on the needs and desires of one captain. It must follow the Laws of Cricket, or, to be specific, ICC's match playing conditions, where Clause 12.7.6 clearly states: 'On the final day, if both captains (the batsmen at the wicket may act for their captain) accept that there is no prospect of either side achieving a victory, they may agree to finish the match after.' Simply put, calling off a game must be mutual. The consequent acts of petulance by Stokes and his teammates were downright unsportsmanlike. The match referee should look into it. Such innocence about the game's laws has happened before. In Bangalore, 1983, Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas and his side left the field, leaving Gavaskar stranded on 86. Umpires had to bring them back. Gavaskar scored his 28th century. In those pre-internet days, the incident didn't degenerate into an online scrap. Sunday night, some Indian fans saw evidence of colonial 'hangovers' in Stokes. Wrong. Stokes is a New Zealander by birth, and England's 'bazball' progenitor coach Brendon McCullum is a bona fide Kiwi. Pak teams will come for Asia Cup, Junior World Cup in India: HI
Dilip Tirkey CHENNAI: After weeks of uncertainty surrounding their participation and mixed signals, it is now official that the Pakistan hockey team will take part in both major tournaments – the Asia Cup and the Junior Men's Hockey World Cup — in India. The Asian meet is set to be held in Rajgir from August 27 to September 7, while the Junior World Cup will take place from November 28 to December 10 across two venues: Chennai and Madurai. Confirming the development, Hockey India (HI) treasurer and president of the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu, Sekar J Manoharan, told TOI that both the senior and junior teams from Pakistan have applied for visas. 'Pakistan's teams will definitely be coming. They've already submitted visa applications. The senior men's team has applied with a contingent of 18 players and seven support staff,' Sekar said after the inauguration of the Sub-Junior Men's National Hockey Championship here on Monday. Sekar also mentioned that the Indian junior team will arrive in Chennai in the first week of October for its preparatory camp. Earlier, there had been indications that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) might not send teams for the upcoming tournaments in India. It was speculated that the PHF had written to the FIH (International Hockey Federation) and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF), expressing their reservations over sending the teams to India. HI President Dilip Tirkey said the federation has not received any official communication yet. 'We too are hearing these talks, but we haven't received any news from the Pakistan team officially yet. If we do receive it, we will take it up with FIH and they will decide how to go about it,' Tirkey told TOI. 'Selectors told to act if form dips' The India men's team endured a poor campaign in the recent FIH Pro League, finishing eighth and suffering seven straight defeats. Reacting to the dismal performance, Tirkey said the federation is in talks with head coach Craig Fulton and the selectors. 'The Pro League is very important for us. And now, we have more important tournaments coming up. If we see players who are not performing well and are unable to deliver, it's on the selectors to take a call. And if there is a fall in form for some players who have been playing for a long time, we've told the selectors to watch out and take action.' Govt backing key to hosting big events After Chennai successfully hosted the Asian Champions Trophy in 2023, Tirkey said HI is confident of staging more marquee events here, thanks to strong support from the Tamil Nadu government. 'TN govt supported us very much last time when we hosted ACT. And where there's full support from the govt, we get the confidence to host international and domestic competitions. This is why we are hosting the Junior World Cup here. The Indian government knows how important security will be, so it will be given accordingly,' said Tirkey.
