Talks between
Thailand and Cambodia this weekend on a simmering border dispute are unlikely to yield substantive results, observers say, citing a lack of faith and even a 'trust deficit' in bilateral negotiations.

Phnom Penh's attempts to 'internationalise' the issue are also unlikely to be welcomed by Bangkok, according to analysts.
On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province, which borders Cambodia's Preah Vihear province.
Thailand, meanwhile, has stated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law and existing agreements with Cambodia.

The two neighbours have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission (JCB) set to be held in Phnom Penh on Saturday.

Embassy contacts Hong Kong-based influencer's ‘kidnapped' father in Cambodia
The French embassy in Cambodia has said that it has been in contact with the father of a Hong Kong-based influencer who posted on social media that he had been kidnapped and his family and lawyers could not contact him. The embassy's comments on Friday came a day after influencer Stephanie Cheng sought public attention for her father's case and wrote multiple Instagram posts, saying he had been kidnapped ahead of a meeting with officials to expose a high-level fraud case. She said her father, Chi Gian Cheng, a French citizen, was taken at Phnom Penh International Airport on Wednesday before his scheduled meeting with a Cambodian minister the following morning. She said he planned to discuss a financial dispute he had with a senior official in the Ministry of the Interior, who was accused of defrauding him. 'The timing and nature of the arrest make it clear that this is not a coincidence. It is a deliberate political manoeuvre to protect the accused official and silence the victim,' Cheng said. The French embassy in the capital Phnom Penh issued a statement on Instagram, saying that it was 'closely monitoring Mr Chi Gian Cheng's situation'.

Advertisement The agreement, Trump said, would cover numerous points of contention, including shipments of rare earth minerals, student visas and tariffs. China, meanwhile, has been reticent to comment on the talks' outcome, with representatives only saying they would submit a report for President Xi Jinping's approval. Here, we summarise the latest developments in the ever-changing trade relationship between the world's two largest economies. What did Trump say – and not say? Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Wednesday to share initial details from the intensive discussions in London, stating a US-China accord was 'done'.
