Social media has been buzzing with conversations around Indians and civic sense, or the perceived lack of it. A now-viral, undated video of the Mauritius metro, built by an Indian company, has reignited debate over why similar infrastructure often falls short within India. Many online users have pointed to corruption and poor civic habits as key reasons behind the disparity.
An X (formerly Twitter) user shared a video of the Mauritius Metrolite Project, which was reportedly sponsored by the Indian government and built by Indian multinational Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The user captioned the post saying, 'Mauritius Metrolite Project is sponsored by the Govt of India and built by an Indian Company, L&T."
The video showed a metro train arriving at a station in the capital city, Port Louis, after which passengers wanting to board the train queued up on either side of the doors, waiting for others to alight. The metro seemingly ran parallel to a road, as spotted in the video.
As soon as the video, posted on July 2, gained traction, many users began commenting on how the Mauritius metro looked cleaner than the metro services of India, especially its capital city, Delhi. Some even commented that corruption and appeasement in India stunted its growth and infrastructural development.
Commenting below the post, a user wrote, 'Looks cleaner than Delhi Metro." Another user pointed out, 'Corruption + Appeasement Politics have put India beyond repair."
A user said corruption in India was the main culprit and added, 'Our infrastructure is not at par. Some bridges collapse after a few days of inauguration." A fourth user echoed a similar sentiment and wrote, 'Indian infra without corruption and with some civic sense can still work."
'This is an example of how Indian engineering can transform an urban landscape. It also shows what we could achieve in India if we had better civic sense and maintenance," another user commented.
Meanwhile, a user expressed bewilderment that L&T had built the system and wrote, 'The same L&T who has gone to court for being removed from a project as the project has been awarded to a company that has given money to the government via electoral bonds?"

PM Modi welcomed with Bhojpuri Chautaal in Trinidad & Tobago

Port of Spain/New Delhi, July 4 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with exceptional warmth by the Indian diaspora and given a colorful traditional Indo-Trinidadian welcome on his arrival here. PM Modi reached Trinidad and Tobago late on Thursday marking the start of the second leg of his five-nation tour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand welcome as the Indian diaspora presented a folk programme upon his arrival, marking the second leg of his five-nation tour. He also met members of the Indian community and praised their contributions to the country's development during his first official visit to Trinidad and Tobago. As the Prime Minister, who is on a two-day visit to Trinidad and Tobago, arrived at Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain, he was greeted with a traditional performance of Bhojpuri Chautaal, an expressive folk music form from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The performance highlighted the cultural ties between the Caribbean nation and India, especially through the Indian diaspora that has kept its cultural roots alive. PM Modi shared his appreciation for the performance by posting on X, "A cultural connection like no other! Very happy to have witnessed a Bhojpuri Chautaal performance in Port of Spain. The connection between Trinidad & Tobago and India, especially parts of eastern UP and Bihar, is noteworthy." He further wrote, "Bhojpuri Chautaal echoes in Trinidad & Tobago!". Applauding the contribution of the Indian community to the country's development, PM Modi highlighted that the diaspora had not only achieved success in various fields but also remained deeply connected to Indian culture. This visit is particularly significant, as it marks Modi's first official trip to the Caribbean nation since becoming Prime Minister. It is also the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999. In a special gesture symbolizing the close ties between the two countries, PM Modi was warmly received by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and several members of her Cabinet at the airport. He was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour and welcomed with more cultural performances. PM Modi also addressed a large gathering of the Indian Diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago. The event was attended by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Members of her Cabinet, Members of Parliament and several other dignitaries. PM Modi also spoke about the deep historical ties between the two nations, noting, "Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's ancestors hailed from Buxar, Bihar. Kamala ji herself has visited the village. People consider her a daughter of Bihar." The Prime Minister also shared a symbolic moment when he spoke of bringing water from this year's Mahakumbh, the world's largest spiritual gathering, to offer to the Ganga River in Trinidad. China tells India to stop interfering in matters related to Tibet, Dalai Lama succession

China hopes India will stop using Tibet issues to interfere in domestic affairs and avoid affecting the development of ties, its foreign ministry said on Friday. A senior Indian minister said on Thursday only the Dalai Lama and the trust he set up have the authority to identify his successor as the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism, in a rare comment contradicting China's long-held position. Beijing says it has the right to approve the Dalai Lama's successor as a legacy from imperial times. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bargain Prices on Unsold Container Houses in Leyte - Check Them Out! IOC Slams Government Over Doping, Governance Failures as Ahmedabad's 2036 Olympic Bid Stalls: Report

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government's hopes of India hosting the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad were met with a wake-up call from the International Olympic Committee, according to a report by Indian Express. The Indian delegation which visited the Swiss city of Lausanne to make this ambitious pitch on July 1 was headed by Gujarat's home and sports minister Harsh Sanghavi and Indian Olympic Association president, the former athlete P.T. Usha. It had senior bureaucrats from the Gujarat and Union governments along with "private consultants and corporate executives," according to the report. Yet, the IOC, Indian Express learnt through an unnamed source, asked India to settle its own issues like those of governance at the IOA, a rampant doping problem and India's poor show at Olympics games. The latest Olympic games in Paris, India managed six medals despite a much-touted Rs 470-crore Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). 'It has been communicated very candidly that while India can continue preparing for its bid to host future Olympics, the country has to address these issues first. This was, in a nutshell, the big takeaway from this meeting,' the official who was privy to the discussions told The Indian Express. The delegation's statement did not mention the "wake-up call" but said that the team 'explored the opportunity and feasibility of hosting a future edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games' without specifying the target year. Usha did not respond to Indian Express's request for comment. 'It has been made clear to us that the IOA must get its house in order before serious talks regarding hosting the Olympics take place. That's the starting point,' the unnamed official said. Administrative hurdles plague Indian athletics with the IOC suspending key grants to India since October 2024 over India's inability to be on the IOC's page on sponsorship deals and tackling alleged financial mismanagement. The tussle within the IOA over the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as the Chief Executive Officer is also one of the enduring reasons why Usha has been under pressure from the IOC. India has also topped the world doping charts. The latest World Anti-Doping Agency figures of 2023 finds that the maximum number of positive cases in terms of numbers and percentage are India's. India's positivity rate for banned substances stood at 3.8% – 214 Adverse Analytical Findings (AAF) from 5606 samples.
