Passenger rail service coming to Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru line by next year, says transport minister
JOHOR BARU, May 9 — Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) and Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) will introduce passenger services on the Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru line by next year at the latest.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the new service is expected to start within six to 12 months, taking into account the need to build new passenger stations along the line.
'Throughout this year, we can find at least three locations (stations) to drop off and pick up passengers,' he told reporters after officiating the reopening of the track for cargo service operations for the Kempas Baru-Pasir Gudang route, near here today.
He said the Transport Ministry will carry out studies and discuss with the state government to get suitable locations for the stations.
Loke said that for a start, the passenger services would use existing KTMB coaches and that he would consider purchasing new coaches in the future.
'We want something that can be immediately implemented within a short period. We want this project to be implemented promptly, so we will discuss with the Finance Ministry for approval and use RAC resources to finance this project,' he said.
Meanwhile, Loke said that the Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru line has been reopened after being closed since last October for work to upgrade the 39.9-kilometre (km) track, encompassing three main sections, namely Kempas Baru-Seelong, Seelong-Johor Port and Johor Port-Pasir Gudang.
He added that the upgrading work involved repairing railway structures, building new drainage systems, replacing track and gravel and improving the signalling and safety systems, with a total project value of RM55 million.
'With the reopening of the track for the Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru cargo service operation, KTMB will increase container handling from 140 20-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) per day previously to at least 420 TEUs per day, which is a three-fold increase.'
'Previously, KTMB only made two trips a day, but after the reopening, KTMB will have cargo trains making at least six trips daily,' he said.
He said that customers can also increase their container transfer activities not only from the Pasir Gudang Port to the Tanjung Pelepas Port but also to other ports in Peninsular Malaysia, including the Kuantan Port via the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), Port Klang, Penang Port and even out of the country via Thailand and to China. — Bernama

Chan Loong Wei said the upcoming state assembly is the right platform for the Warisan rep to voice out any issues he has with the project as an elected representative. 'If he is genuinely curious or wishes to seek accountability, I challenge him to raise this matter in the upcoming state assembly sitting,' he said in a statement. Chan, who is Phoong's political secretary, said Esteel Enterprise is a company that is owned by a credible Singaporean businessman, who also owned a Top 100 Private Company in China in 2023. 'They (Esteel) have real credentials and real capital. In fact, their acquisition of Southern Steel Bhd in Penang in October 2024 was widely reported in Sin Chew Daily and other business media,' he added. He said that Phoong remains committed to driving inclusive economic growth, creating decent-paying jobs for Sabah youths and turning the state into a competitive, investor-friendly region. Earlier today, Chong slammed Phoong's explanation of the delays in the Esteel Enterprise steel project, calling it 'misleading and irresponsible'. He also asked how such a major project could be announced in November 2022 without confirmed approvals, especially given the federal moratorium on manufacturing licences for the steel industry at the time. Chong called for the state government to disclose all agreements and terms involving Esteel Enterprise, saying the public deserved full transparency on a project of such scale. He also questioned the delay in implementation, noting that the manufacturing licence was only approved in January 2025, more than two years after the project was announced. On Monday, Phoong said the delay in the RM31 billion steel project was due to setbacks in obtaining the necessary approvals and securing a supply of natural gas. He said the initial projection for Esteel Enterprise's factory to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year was based on the assumption that approvals would be obtained without delay. However, he said Putrajaya's two-year moratorium on manufacturing licences for steel-related industries created complications, with special approval only granted on Jan 24, 2025.

Fahmi, who is leading the Malaysian delegation for the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Ministerial Meeting, said the gathering is a vital platform for formulating joint policies and strategies towards an inclusive, sustainable, and secure digital development in the Asia-Pacific region. 'At the same time, it acts as a stage for multilateral cooperation in the region, which is the fastest-growing in terms of technology, while also supporting developing countries in technical, capacity-building, and ICT regulatory aspects,' he said in a Facebook post today. Cops bust lab producing drug-laced vape liquid, 2 Taiwanese arrested

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Two Taiwanese nationals operating a laboratory processing drug-laced vape liquid in Kuala Lumpur were arrested on Wednesday, say police. Bukit Aman narcotics criminal investigation department (NCID) acting director Mat Zani @ Salahuddin Che Ali said they also seized drugs worth RM3.29 million during a raid on a condominium in Brickfields, Bernama reported. He said in the raid at 10.30pm, police found 20 five-litre plastic containers (jelly cans) and six 0.5-litre plastic bottles containing amphetamine vape liquid. In addition, police also found various types of equipment for processing drug-laced vape liquid, such as a mixer, heating machine, weighing scale, sealing machine, three glass beakers, one plastic funnel, and 95 empty cartridges believed to be for filling the drug-laced vape liquid. 'Initial technical analysis found that this syndicate is believed to be processing vape liquid containing amphetamine (fluoroamphetamine, paramethoxyamphetamine) which has psychoactive and toxic effects similar to the drug ecstasy on its users. 'The adverse effects of consumption include seizures, liver failure, extreme body temperature, psychosis, brain damage, emotional disturbances, extreme addiction, and even sudden death due to heart attack or respiratory failure,' he was quoted as saying during a press conference at the federal police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today. Salahuddin said both suspects, aged 30 and 35, served as chemists and obtained the ingredients for the drug from China. He said that to ensure their drug-laced vape liquid processing activities were not detected, the syndicate used condominiums with complete security to process and package the illicit substances. 'This premise was rented at RM4,100 per month, and it is believed that they change processing locations every three months, bringing in chemists from Taiwan and recruiting local workers to mislead the authorities. 'Both suspects also played a role in guarding the vape liquid processing site and delivering the drugs to customers. They entered our country using a social visit pass and had entered the country twice, at the beginning of this year and early this month,' he said. He stated that the amphetamine drug-laced vape liquid was sold to the local market at RM180 per cartridge and internationally at around RM400 per cartridge. Salahuddin said urine screening tests found both suspects negative for drugs but they were found to have a criminal record in their home country. 'We have checked the criminal records of both suspects through our cooperation with Taiwan's ministry of justice investigation bureau and criminal investigation bureau to trace their past records and assist in the full investigation of this case. 'The results revealed that the first suspect had previously driven under the influence of alcohol and drugs, while the second suspect has a criminal record involving various cases, including murder, drug trafficking, and firearms,' he said, according to Bernama. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Salahuddin said action is also being taken under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988, with the seizure of a Honda AFS125 motorcycle belonging to the first suspect, valued at RM7,000.
