AKPS confirms autogate glitch affecting KLIA, JB checkpoints, blames ‘data integration disruption'

PUTRAJAYA, July 19 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has today confirmed a technical disruption affecting the autogate system for foreign visitors at major national entry points since yesterday. AKPS also assured local travellers that the autogate system for Malaysian passport holders remains unaffected and fully operational. 'Preliminary investigations indicate that the issue stems from a data integration disruption, which has caused delays in the cross-checking process within the MyIMMS system. 'As a result, the autogate system for foreign visitors is currently inoperative,' it said in a statement here. To alleviate congestion, it said all manual counters have been activated, and extra personnel deployed to manage traveller flow and maintain orderly queues. This comes as the disruption has caused congestion and long queues at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2, as well as the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complexes at Sultan Iskandar Building and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor Baru. The disruption reportedly started around noon yesterday, affecting 200 autogates nationwide. The Star previously reported that authorities have yet to determine the cause of the failure and are investigating possible sabotage or hacking. Since June 2024, autogate access has been extended to visitors from 63 countries, as well as diplomats and their family members. Malaysia has since deployed the QR code system at major entry points starting January this year to cut down on waiting time for foreign visitors.

Cops arrest 65-year-old man over fatal Johor restaurant shooting

JOHOR BARU, July 16 — Police have arrested a 65-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting at a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah earlier this year. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the foreign national was detained by an investigation team in the city at 4.30pm yesterday. 'The suspect is currently in police custody and has been remanded for seven days until next Tuesday to assist in investigations. 'The arrest is the latest development in the investigation into his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting,' he said in a statement today. The incident occurred on January 8, when a 40-year-old man was shot dead while dining with friends at a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah. Following the murder, police launched a series of operations in March, during which a 64-year-old man was shot dead. Police also seized two pistols, ammunition, drugs, and an air pistol from the suspect. Later that same month, nine male members of a secret society, aged between 36 and 66, were arrested to assist in the probe. All were later released. Police believe the shooting was linked to secret society activity, with revenge considered a possible motive.

Johor police seize ecstasy, marijuana worth RM3.55m in major drug raid, arrest local man and two Vietnamese women

JOHOR BARU, July 14 — Police seized various types of drugs worth RM3.55 million and arrested a local man and two Vietnamese women in special operations conducted on July 10 and 11. Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the three suspects, aged between 32 and 39, were arrested during separate raids conducted by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department of the state police and the Johor Baru Selatan district police. He said the syndicate, which is believed to be active since April this year, used gated and guarded residences to store and process the drugs before distributing them to the local market. According to him, the drugs were seized following the arrest of the local man by a roadside, which then led the police to raid a rented room in a shophouse here. 'The suspect also led the police to conduct raids at three luxury condominium units, also rented by him, where more drugs were seized and two Vietnamese women were arrested,' he told a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters, here today He said that in total, the police seized 20.7 kilogrammes (kg) of powder, suspected to be ecstasy, 18.49 kg of marijuana, 154.25 grams of ketamine and 141 grams of erimin 5 pills, as well as various equipment for processing and repackaging drugs, as well as RM800 in cash. He said the current drug trafficking trend also appears to be shifting towards marijuana flowers, based on recent seizures. 'This may be because marijuana flowers have a higher hallucinogenic effect due to their purity, besides being more expensive, with an estimated market value of RM36,000 per kilogramme,' he said. Kumar said all the suspects, who tested positive for methamphetamine, were on remand until July 17, and the case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. — Bernama
