AKPS confirms autogate glitch affecting KLIA, JB checkpoints, blames ‘data integration disruption'

Malay Mail4 days ago
PUTRAJAYA, July 19 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has today confirmed a technical disruption affecting the autogate system for foreign visitors at major national entry points since yesterday.
AKPS also assured local travellers that the autogate system for Malaysian passport holders remains unaffected and fully operational.
'Preliminary investigations indicate that the issue stems from a data integration disruption, which has caused delays in the cross-checking process within the MyIMMS system.
'As a result, the autogate system for foreign visitors is currently inoperative,' it said in a statement here.
To alleviate congestion, it said all manual counters have been activated, and extra personnel deployed to manage traveller flow and maintain orderly queues.
This comes as the disruption has caused congestion and long queues at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2, as well as the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complexes at Sultan Iskandar Building and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor Baru.
The disruption reportedly started around noon yesterday, affecting 200 autogates nationwide.
The Star previously reported that authorities have yet to determine the cause of the failure and are investigating possible sabotage or hacking.
Since June 2024, autogate access has been extended to visitors from 63 countries, as well as diplomats and their family members.
Malaysia has since deployed the QR code system at major entry points starting January this year to cut down on waiting time for foreign visitors.

Miri bridge will help city become San Francisco of Sarawak, says premier

(UKAS pic) PETALING JAYA : The RM450 million Miri Marina bridge will help turn the city into the San Francisco of Sarawak, says Abang Johari Openg. The Sarawak premier said the two-lane cable-stayed bridge would not only offer scenic views of the South China Sea but would reduce travel time between Pulau Melayu and the Marina to five minutes from the current half an hour. 'This landscape upgrade in Miri, with its iconic facilities and connectivity infrastructure, aligns with the city's image as the resort city of northern Sarawak, putting it on par with other tourist destinations,' Abang Johari was quoted as saying by the Borneo Post. He said this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre. The construction of the 650-metre bridge, styled after the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. It will take four years to complete. Separately, the Dayak Daily quoted Abang Johari as saying that the project is expected to boost tourism and the local economy as well as resolve congestion issues.

Malaysia records 16.9m tourist arrivals in first five months of 2025, a 20.4pc increase from last year

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Malaysia recorded an increase of 20.4 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals from January to May this year, with a total of 16.94 million visitors compared to 14.07 million during the same period in 2024. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the top five markets were led by Singapore, which remained the largest contributor with 8.34 million visitors, a 26.5 per cent increase compared to the previous year. 'Indonesia ranked second with 1.82 million visitors (up 10.3 per cent), followed by China with 1.81 million visitors, recording the highest growth rate of 38.8 per cent. Thailand saw 1.06 million arrivals (up 5.2 per cent), while India recorded 664,811 visitors, reflecting a strong recovery with a 32.0 per cent increase,' it said in a parliamentary written reply. The ministry added that arrivals from long-haul markets also showed strong performance, with Australia and the United Kingdom recording increases of 16.6 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively, amounting to 198,968 and 185,197 foreign visitors. 'The increase in foreign tourist arrivals clearly reflects the effectiveness of various initiatives undertaken by the government through strategic approaches, progressive policies such as the Visa Liberalisation Plan (VLP), provision of support and incentives to industry players, and the implementation of high-impact promotional campaigns, including digital promotions and strategic collaborations with online platforms and airlines,' the ministry said. The ministry was responding to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok Suh Sim, who asked for the breakdown of foreign tourist arrivals, by country, to Malaysia from January to June 2025 compared with the breakdown during the same period in 2024 and the projected breakdown of foreign tourist arrivals for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. The ministry said it is targeting 47 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2026, with a particular focus on key markets showing high growth potential. 'These target markets include Central Asia, the Middle East, Asean, Europe, and Oceania,' it added.
