Entry from RM2: Johor's Royal Botanical Garden to reopen Aug 31 as key tourism draw for 2026
Menteri Besar Johor Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi expressed his gratitude to His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia for the reopening of the Johor Royal Botanical Garden.
He was also grateful to the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail who agreed to upgrade the garden as one of the main tourism landmarks in the state of Johor.
'I would like to share the news that the entire Johor people have been waiting for. The Johor Royal Botanical Garden will open to the public starting August 31, 2025!' he said in a Facebook post today.
He said the garden will be open to visitors every Wednesday to Sunday from 8am to 6pm, while it will be closed every Monday and Tuesday for maintenance purposes.
Entrance ticket prices are set at RM2 for Malaysian citizens and RM30 for non-citizens, while entry is free for children aged five and below and holders of Disabled Persons (OKU) cards.
Onn Hafiz said the Johor Royal Botanical Garden was first developed in 1864, and is now back with a new look that is more beautiful, organised and reflects the natural heritage that is the identity of the state of Johor.
Covering an area of more than 126 acres, the garden now features 12 Special Gardens with more than 583 species of flora and almost 145,000 trees. It is the result of close collaboration between the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG), Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu), Pengerang Municipal Council (MPP) and Pontian Municipal Council (MPPn).
'Hopefully this effort will revive the memories and sentimental value of the historical locations that are part of the identity of Johor Bahru City. God willing.

Soon – licence for short-term stays
SHORT-TERM rental accommodation (STRA) operators will soon be required to obtain a business licence from local authorities to register as tourist accommodation premises, said the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister. Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the matter was agreed upon by the ministry and the Housing and Local Government Ministry to improve regulatory control over STRA and tourist lodging premises. 'This is crucial as licensing and enforcement of accommodation premises come under the respective state's local authorities,' he said in a written reply to Rodziah Ismail (PH–Ampang). Rodziah wanted to know why the launch of the STRA guidelines had been delayed, and for a revised timeline to ensure smooth preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026. She also asked how the government planned to align STRA regulations with the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482) to avoid overlapping jurisdictions. Tiong said the ministry has completed a preliminary review of Act 482 and aims to table the amendments in Parliament by year-end or early 2026. The proposed amendments followed 54 engagement sessions involving nearly 1,000 participants, including representatives from various ministries, agencies, NGOs and industry players, including those from Sabah and Sarawak. The proposed changes include improvements to licensing processes, introduction of insurance protection, stronger enforcement, registration of digital platforms and setting up of a Tourism Tribunal. Tiong said the Planning Guidelines for STRA will soon be tabled for Cabinet's consideration. Once approved, it will be presented to the National Council for Local Government before being adopted by state governments and local councils.

Chinese tourists to get visa-free entry
South Korea will offer visa-free entry to tourist groups from China, for a temporary period from Sept 29 through June 2026, to boost foreign tourism ahead of an Asia-Pacific summit, the government said. The visa-free offer was first announced in March after China's decision last November to offer a visa exemption to South Koreans and foreign visitors from several other countries. It also comes amid expectations that ties between the two countries will improve under the new South Korean administration of liberal President Lee Jae-myung. The decision to introduce the measure ahead of a Chinese holiday period in early October will help boost the domestic economy amid a recovery in foreign visits, the tourism ministry said yesterday, after a meeting to revitalising tourism ahead of the Asia-Pacific summit. South Korea will host a summit of leaders from 21 economies for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum from Oct 31 to Nov 1 in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, a gathering where Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump might hold separate talks. — Reuters
