Microsoft Copilot is getting a face and it is going to age, says AI chief Mustafa Suleyman

Microsoft's AI assistant Copilot is no longer just a voice in your browser, it's getting a face. The company has begun testing a new feature called Copilot Appearance, which gives its generative AI chatbot a touch of personality, complete with expressions and gestures.Think of it as Copilot's coming-out party: the usually faceless AI now smiles, nods and reacts as it chats with you. Microsoft says it wants to give users 'a new, visual way to chat with Copilot,' and it's starting with an experimental roll-out through Copilot Labs.advertisementThe experiment adds a surprising amount of life to conversations. Alongside real-time facial expressions, Copilot now uses non-verbal cues to respond when you speak to it. That includes simple nods, a grin when appropriate, and a touch of character when giving an answer.
And there's more, voice mode is getting a memory upgrade, meaning the chatbot won't just hear your voice but will also remember your ongoing conversation. If that sounds a bit like talking to an animated character in a video game, that's very much the idea.At the moment, this new look is exclusive to the web version of Copilot. There's no sign yet of the feature coming to Windows or mobile apps, so you'll need a browser to meet the new face of Microsoft AI.For those who can access it, switching on Copilot Appearance is simple. Enter voice mode by clicking on the microphone icon, go to Voice Settings, and flip the toggle labelled 'Copilot Appearance.' From there, Copilot will react to your voice commands with all the enthusiasm of a newly hired assistant.Mustafa Suleyman, who leads Microsoft's AI division, explained the thinking behind these changes on The Colin & Samir Show this week. 'Copilot will certainly have a kind of permanent identity, a presence, and it will have a room that it lives in, and it will age,' Suleyman said. The aim, he suggests, is to make Copilot feel like more than a chatbot – more like a digital companion. Suleyman first teased Copilot's expressive side at Microsoft's 50th Anniversary celebrations earlier this year. Now, those early experiments have grown into a public test for users in the US, UK and Canada. This isn't Microsoft's first attempt at giving software a human touch. Long before Copilot, there was Clippy, the animated paperclip who cheerfully offered to help (whether you wanted it or not). Clippy went down in tech history as one of the most annoying assistants of all time – though some now look back fondly on its awkward charm.advertisementWith Copilot Appearance, Microsoft appears to be learning from its past. This AI isn't here to interrupt; it's here to engage. And so far, there's been no sign that it will sprout googly eyes and bounce across your screen. For now, Microsoft hasn't announced a timeline for a wider release, but given the company's big bet on AI, it's safe to assume this is just the beginning of Copilot's makeover.- Ends

Inside Jeffrey Epstein's New York lair: Hidden cameras in bedrooms, 'Lolita' and framed photos with billionaires

A new report has offered a closer look inside the Manhattan townhouse of disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, revealing a trove of disturbing and bizarre details about his private life and connections with powerful individuals. This undated trial evidence image shows British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell and US financier Jeffrey Epstein.(AFP) The New York Times published previously unseen photographs of the seven-story Upper East Side residence, which had long remained hidden from public view. The 21,000-square-foot property, estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars, was reportedly filled with unsettling art, surveillance equipment and personal memorabilia tied to global elites. Among the most notable items was a framed $1 bill signed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, inscribed with the message: 'I was wrong.' A first-edition copy of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, a controversial novel about an adult man's sexual obsession with a 12-year-old girl who repeatedly rapes her, was also displayed inside the home. Epstein's townhouse was outfitted with surveillance cameras, including several installed in bedrooms. The report noted that photos of prominent world figures lined the house, including Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, Pope John Paul II, Elon Musk and Bill Gates. A letter from filmmaker Woody Allen was also found, describing Epstein's dinner parties as reminiscent of Dracula's castle, which had 'three young female vampires who service the place.' Other elements found inside included eerie taxidermy animals, a sculpture of a woman in a bridal gown hanging from a rope and a painting of former President Bill Clinton in a blue dress and red heels. In the massage room were paintings of naked women and shelves stocked with lubricant, according to photos reviewed by The New York Times. Epstein regularly directed teenage girls to massage him while he was naked and masturbated in front of them, according to court records and interviews with victims, the report added.

Narayana Murthy, Late Ratan Tata and Azim Premji- File image (Left to right) Microsoft layoff: In a significant development impacting the employees of Microsoft across the world, global software technology giant Microsoft is laying off employees of Washington-based office. As per a report by the Seattle Times, the company continues to trim its workforce amid its massive spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure across the world. Here are all the details you need to know about the recent layoff from Microsoft. How many employees are fired in recent round? In the recent layoff, reports have it that Microsoft has laid off 40 Washington-based employees. Monday's layoffs, revealed in a state filing, are distinct from earlier global job cut announcements. In May, Microsoft said it would lay off over 6,000 employees, followed by another 9,000 in July. The company described Monday's job cuts as minimal. So far this year, Microsoft has eliminated a total of 3,160 positions in Washington, including the latest round. Why Microsoft is continuously firing employees? Earlier in July, it was reported that Microsoft is laying off 4 per cent of its workforce, or around 9,000 employees, in yet another round of job cuts this year. According to The Seattle Times, employees in Microsoft's Xbox division, known as Microsoft Gaming, are being hit hard by these layoffs. 'To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness,' said Xbox leader Phil Spencer in a message to the team. Which employees are being fired by Microsoft? The fresh job cuts come less than two months after Microsoft announced it was laying off more than 6,000 employees, followed by an additional 305 reductions in early June. Microsoft laid off 1,900 Activision Blizzard and Xbox employees in January 2024, followed by several game studio closures and job losses in May, and 1,000 job losses from its HoloLens and Azure cloud teams in June. Microsoft Layoffs 2025: Tech Giant Now Cuts 40 More Jobs Amid Record AI Spend

Microsoft laid off 40 employees in Washington state, adding to job cuts this year. Despite strong finances, the company invests heavily in AI, with $30 billion planned by 2025. Microsoft has laid off 40 employees in Washington state, adding to the series of job cuts it has made this year. This latest round of layoffs was disclosed in a state filing on Monday, even as the company continues to report strong financial performance and increase its investments in artificial intelligence, according to Moneycontrol. Despite these workforce reductions, Microsoft recently announced record-breaking quarterly revenue and profit, driven by strong growth in its cloud and AI businesses. The company has invested $88 billion over the past year to bolster its AI infrastructure and plans to spend an additional $30 billion by September 2025, the report stated. Microsoft had cut about 9,000 employees, or 4% of its workforce, in the latest round of job cuts. The third round of layoffs happened after 6000 job cuts (3% of its workforce) in May and over 300 sackings just a week earlier. The Bloomberg report had also mentioned that Microsoft has allocated a capital expenditure of around Rs 6.6 lakh crore ($80 billion) for the current financial year. A substantial portion of this budget will be dedicated to expanding data centre infrastructure, aiming to alleviate the strain on existing facilities that support AI services. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
