Wimbledon star's response speaks volumes after being told to retire immediately

Fabio Fognini took reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz to the limit in their first round clash at Wimbledon, before the veteran Italian eventually fell to a five-set defeat
Fabio Fognini made the most of his Wimbledon farewell as he took champion Carlos Alcaraz to five sets underneath the baking Centre Court sun. And as he was urged to end his final season immediately by John McEnroe, the Italian admitted he perhaps could call it a day straight away.
On the hottest opening day in Wimbledon history - as temperatures reachd ea sweltering 32 degrees - Alcaraz was almost caught cold by a 38-year-old who is due to retire at the end of the year.

The second seed eventually came through a marathon encounter 7-5 6-7 (5) 7-5 2-6 6-1 in an energy-sapping four hours and 37 minutes as the former world No.9 rolled back the years.

Fognini went through his array of flicks and tricks as he enjoyed what was his final appearance in SW19. He almost embarked on a lap of honour after coming out on top in one mesmerising rally which left Alcaraz, 16 years his junior, leaning on his towel box gasping for breath.
And after tennis icon McEnroe stated this could well be the perfect moment to end his career, Fognini appeared in two minds.
"It's tough for me to speak, believe me," said Fognini after his encounter with Alcaraz. "But, yeah, I think this is probably the best way to say [goodbye] to Wimbledon, and maybe to tennis.
"That's what I'm thinking now. I am happy, for sure. I have a lot of emotions coming to my mind."
Fognini, whose best run at a major came in a run to the 2011 French Open quarter-finals and is one of very few players to hold multiple victories over Rafael Nadal on clay, has announced he plans to retire at the end of this year - although he has not yet said exactly when he will walk away.
McEnroe shared his thoughts on the BBC, revealing that he has actually spoken to the Italian's wife about his tennis retirement. He said: "This was the perfect ending for Fognini. Luckily for Alcaraz, towards the end of the fourth set, the crowd realised that Fognini was playing unbelievable.

"Carlos looked more tired than Fognini even though there's a 16-year age gap! What in the hell is going on here? So the crowd started rallying behind Alcaraz and that picked him up a little bit. I almost hope that [Fognini] doesn't play anymore because I'm not sure he can play any better than that.
"I played Flavio Panetta in seniors mixed doubles at the French [Open] and she thinks it's time for Fabio to be at home more with the kids. I think she is ready for her husband to be home more."

While Fognini's wife may want him to retire, Alcaraz is less certain that the Italian should be walking away from the game.
"I don't know why this is his last Wimbledon because with the level he is playing he can play for another three or four years," said Alcaraz. "Fabio is a great player and has shown his level and talent throughout his career.
"I'm sad it's probably his last Wimbledon but I'm happy to have shared the court with him."
Alcaraz will face British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in round two and added: 'I saw his name when he qualified for the first time, he's in the second round so he's at a level. I will have to bring my best tennis to the match.'

Nick Kyrgios claims Emma Raducanu is in a Wimbledon love triangle with two stars

Emma's love life has become the talk of WImbledon and now Nick Kyrgios couldn't resist stirring the pot Nick Kyrgios has mischievously claimed Emma Raducanu is in the middle of a 'love triangle' with fellow tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper. The Aussie tennis ace made the bold comment with a grin while speaking on talkSPORT, where he's now working after being dropped by the BBC. ‌ Emma and Carlos have been the subject of light-hearted romance rumours recently, after the pair were spotted together multiple times from practice courts at Wimbledon to courtside support at the HSBC Championships. ‌ The two 22-year-olds, who are set to play mixed doubles together at the US Open, also recently joined forces as brand ambassadors for Evian but when asked about the buzz around their friendship, Emma laughed it off and made it clear there's no romance involved. 'I'm really happy to be playing with him… we're just good friends,' she said. That didn't stop Kyrgios from stirring the pot this week, cheekily telling listeners: 'I don't know, I think it's a love triangle! Draper, Alcaraz, Raducanu. They're fighting over Raducanu I think, I'm not sure.' Referring to Emma's smiley Wimbledon appearances, he added: 'I think the outside [she looks happy]. I don't know who's making her happy. The tennis world loves a love story, they love to try and put two [players] together. But Emma is number one British female player at the moment, she's doing fairly well. 'Obviously, winning a grand slam at 19 is never easy, it comes with a lot of expectations from the outside world. But, you know, as long as she's happy." Earlier this week, Emma kicked off her Wimbledon 2025 campaign with a solid 6-3 6-3 win over fellow Brit Mimi Xu. She's now set to face reigning 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova in the next round. ‌ Meanwhile, Jack Draper begins his tournament against Sebastian Baez, and Emma is already off the mark after a tough battle with Fabio Fognini. During a pre-Wimbledon press conference, Emma once again dismissed the swirling romance rumours with a laugh. Speaking about her upcoming doubles pairing with Alcaraz, she said: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian.' ‌ 'Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' READ MORE: Emma Raducanu addresses Carlos Alcaraz romance rumours with four-word answer When the inevitable question about romance came up, she smiled and replied: 'We're just good friends.' The moderator swiftly wrapped up the topic, with Emma joking: 'Way to wrap up!' ‌ Speaking fondly about their four-year friendship, she explained: 'I've known him for years and actually in Wimbledon 2021, it was kind of the first time I started getting to know him… I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round and it was like a big win, his breakout kind of win on a big stage… we were staying in touch for the whole time and yeah, it's nice.' She added: 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. 'I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young… when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection.' While the so-called 'love triangle' remains nothing more than playful tennis gossip, it's safe to say Nickhas successfully stirred the Wimbledon pot.

On X, formerly Twitter, Alcaraz added: "38 years old? Congratulations on the incredible match! It was an honor to share this battle at Wimbledon with you!" The Spanish superstar always anticipated a difficult match, telling reporters: "I knew at the beginning that it was going to be really difficult playing against Fabio. Doesn't matter, I mean, it's his last year, his last tournaments. "The talent that Fabio has is immense. In every match he can show his best tennis. I think today he has shown one of his best tennis. But yes, really proud about getting through and give myself another chance to be better in the next round." Will Carlos Alcaraz make it three in a row at Wimbledon? Give us your prediction in the comments section. ‌ Fognini reciprocated Alcaraz's kind words, saying: "At the moment I think he's probably the best player in the world. He played against Jannik [Sinner] one month ago amazing final. So all the respect for him, yeah." Up next for Alcaraz is British qualifier Oliver Tarvet. The second-round match will be played on Wednesday, with the time and court yet to be confirmed. Tarvet, 21, is ranked 733rd in the world and earned his place in the second round by beating Switzerland's Leandro Riedi 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday. The Brit is relishing the chance to face Alcaraz and commented: "I'm quietly confident I can win against anyone. Alcaraz isn't an exception to that. "He's done an incredible amount in the tennis world. He's a difficult guy not to respect. I will just go out there and try and treat it like another match. At the end of the day, for me, I try and play the ball, not the player."

Nick Kyrgios stuns Grand Slam champion with Wimbledon move after BBC snub

Naomi Osaka jokingly said Nick Kyrgios should come and sit with her team at Wimbledon and had no idea that the Australian had taken up her offer and watched her first round win Naomi Osaka had no idea that Nick Kyrgios was in her box cheering her on in the first round of Wimbledon after jokingly inviting him - not expecting him to rock up. The Australian, who made the final at SW19 back in 2022, is not in action but is in London and observed as the Japanese star won in straight sets. Osaka has won two Grand Slams in the past - two in the US and two in Australia - but has not reached those heights for years. ‌ She remains one of the tour's bubbliest personalities and begun her grass court effort impressively, winning 6-4, 7-6 against Talia Gibson. In the lead up to the contest Osaka joked that she'd like to have Kyrgios in her box cheering her on. He ended up accepting her offer, even if she had no idea he was there. ‌ Osaka said: "Oh, my God. I jokingly told someone, Hey, I know Nick's around, maybe he wants to come to my match. But I was joking, 'cause I know we're, like, two completely different players. Honestly, I would have loved to come to his matches, because I know he's pretty fun. "Yeah, I think that's also a big part of why we're different is 'cause I know he kind of like tells his box what to do, and he probably would have noticed if I was in there. I kind of, like, zone out most of the time. That's a little embarrassing that he was there. I guess it is cool that he was there." She added: "No, I mean, I am really excited to play mixed doubles with him. I think he's obviously won a doubles tournament. Well, we've played last year. I think Fritz was being a little bit too serious on me. Yeah, I think it should be fun. I don't know. I feel like for me, I have always felt like I've always related to him in a weird way, even though we're completely different. I kind of understand some of the things that he does. I hope in some way maybe he felt I wouldn't be bold enough to say 'inspired', but I hope he could relate a little bit to the things that I do, too." Kyrgios been dropped for BBC's Wimbledon coverage this year amid huge backlash after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari. The Australian star worked as a pundit for the broadcaster during last year's tournament, a decision which caused outrage after he admitted assaulting Passari during an incident in 2021. He is not playing in London after he was ruled out of the competition due to injury after suffering a "small setback" in his recovery.
