Former BYU QB Jake Retzlaff reportedly to transfer to Tulane
The former BYU quarterback has committed to Tulane, according to a report from ESPN on July 21.
The move comes 10 days after Retzlaff left BYU rather than sit through a planned seven-game suspension for a violation of the school's honor code, which prohibits premarital sex.

Retzlaff had been accused in a lawsuit in May of raping a woman in 2023. Retzlaff denied the allegation and the lawsuit was dismissed on June 30, with the parties jointly agreeing to dismiss with prejudice.
Given the severity of the allegations Retzlaff faced, Tulane spent more than a week doing background on the transfer quarterback and had the school's Title IX office review the move, according to ESPN. The report added that Retzlaff will join the Green Wave as a walk-on, as he was unable to enter the NCAA transfer portal given when he left BYU.
Retzlaff threw for 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season and ran for 417 yards and six touchdowns. He helped lead the Cougars to an 11-2 record and a No. 14 ranking in the final US LBM Coaches Poll.
At Tulane, he'll aim to win the starting job vacated by Darian Mensah, who transferred to Duke after leading the Green Wave to the American Athletic Conference championship game last season. Retzlaff is one of four transfer quarterbacks on the roster, joining Brendan Sullivan (Iowa), Kadin Semonza (Ball State) and Donovan Leary (Illinois). On3 Sports reported that Retzlaff has not been promised the starting job.
Coach Jon Sumrall had originally brought in TJ Finley from Western Kentucky, but the well-traveled quarterback entered the transfer portal in April after he was arrested after police linked the license plate of a truck he was driving to a stolen car in Atlanta (Finley's attorneys claimed he was victim of a scam after buying a used truck through a social media marketplace).
After going 9-5 in Sumrall's first season, Tulane is expected to be one of the best teams this season outside the power conference level, which could put it in contention for a designated spot in the College Football Playoff.

Disney DIS is riding high as its direct-to-consumer (DTC) streaming platforms — Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — reshape its growth trajectory. Alcantara, Cabrera both in top 30 of ESPN's top MLB trade prospects
Before their appearances on the mound versus the San Diego Padres on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, Edward Cabrera and Sandy Alcantara's trade rumors continue to swirl around the league. In ESPN's most recent trade deadline predictions, both Marlins pitchers cracked the top 30 most likely to be dealt — Alcantara landing at No. 4 and Cabrera at No. 18. But Marlins teammate and All-Star Kyle Stowers said they try not to let the speculation get to them on the field. 'Obviously, it's a part of the business,' Stowers said. 'But I think it can be more exhausting to try to play the hypotheticals... At the end of the day, what's going to happen will happen.' Sandy Alcantara, the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, has consistently struggled this season, raising questions about his future with the team. After his most recent start against the Kansas City Royals on Friday, his ERA lands at a whopping 7.14, and his inconsistency has fueled the speculation surrounding his name. ESPN currently gives him a 50% chance of being traded, a number that seemed unthinkable just a season ago. 'He has been tinkering this season to try to get his pitch mix and locations right in hopes of regaining his former glory,' wrote ESPN insiders Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan. Cabrera, on the other hand, has been a bright spot in an otherwise up-and-down Marlins rotation. Despite dealing with minor injuries and making three fewer starts than Alcantara, he's posted a 3.61 ERA and leads the team with 86 strikeouts. ESPN pegs his trade likelihood at 30%, but with a fastball topping out at 97 mph and a diverse pitch mix that troubles both lefties and righties, he's seen as one of the more valuable young arms on the market. For the Marlins, they could get a serious payout for him with three more years under team control. 'Cabrera has premium stuff, and he's got a lot of weapons,' General Manager Clayton McCullough said earlier this season. With just days remaining before the trade deadline, the upcoming series against the Padres could play a critical role in determining both pitchers' futures. Their performances could raise — or lower — their trade value. Either way, this could very well be the last time we see Cabrera and Alcantara wearing a Marlins uniform.

Former UNC pitcher named amongst ESPN's Top 50 MLB Trade Deadline candidates
Athletes will struggle, even at the professional level. Just ask Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen, the former UNC standout who is mired in the worst season of his MLB career. Gallen, who finished top fiv ive in NL CY Young voting for the 2023 MLB season, currently sports a 7-10 win-loss record with a 5.40 earned run average. Despite striking out 110 batters, good enough for 30th amongst all pitchers, Gallen just gave up six runs in a Saturday loss to the sub-.500 Los Angeles Angels. Sometimes, players just need a change of scenery to rediscover their talent. Such could be the case for Gallen, whom ESPN recently named a Top 50 Trade Deadline Candidate. "Gallen was excellent for the past three seasons but now, in a contract year, is posting career-worst numbers in almost every category," Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan wrote. "His stuff looks similar, but he's allowing much more damage when hitters make contact. That said, his strikeout-to-walk ratio is back to normal in his past five starts, at 29-to-5, despite a 6.04 ERA in that span. Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said the team does not plan to deal away players at the deadline, but if Arizona doesn't make a run, it could reap a huge return with all its impending free agents." Arizona is in a comfortable spot itself, sitting at .500 and eight games out of first place in the NL West, with a deficit even closer in the wild card race. I'm sure the Diamondbacks want the former Diamond Heel for their playoff push – and they have until July 31 to decide. Gallen compiled a 14-13 win-loss record at North Carolina, compiling a 3.36 ERA and striking out 231 batters. Gallen was part of Arizona's World Series run in 2023, starting Game 1 as its staff ace, then followed that season up with a 14-6 campaign in 2024. Will Gallen stay put in the desert or join a World Series contender? You'll know by Thursday, July 31, better known as the trade deadline.
