Penn Badgley looks somber as he breaks his silence on Gossip Girl costar Michelle Trachtenberg's shock death

Daily Mail24-04-2025

Penn Badgley 's triumphant appearance Wednesday at the You season five premiere took a somber turn when he opened up about the loss of his former Gossip Girl costar Michelle Trachtenberg.
Badgley, 38, looked stone-faced as he said the loss of his old friend at just 39 was 'surreal' while chatting with E! News.
He was weighing in just a week after the Buffy The Vampire Slayer actress' cause of death was finally revealed, following her death on February 26.
Badgley said it was Trachtenberg's lighter qualities that he most remembered after her passing.
'What I remember of her is she was incredibly quick to laugh,' he confessed on the red carpet at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
'She was really joyous. We all have our ups and downs, our lights and shadows, but she had this — I mean, she was mature, but she had this childlike, joyous laugh,' he continued.

Sadly, the actor admitted that he and Trachtenberg hadn't run in to each other 'in over a decade, but he still spoke fondly of her and praised her 'really pure heart.'
'It's surreal,' he said while looking stunned. 'Really surreal, really saddening.'
Trachtenberg played the recurring character Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl, while Badgley was part of the main cast as Dan Humphrey.
Georgina, a former friend of Blake Lively's character, was introduced in the first season, when she had a brief fling with Dan.
The two continued to have romantic entanglements on and off throughout the series' six seasons, though Georgina's infatuation with Dan also covered for her desire to use him to manipulated her friends and enemies.
Trachtenberg's cause of death was revealed on April 16, after her family relented on their desire to have her autopsy results withheld, which they attributed to religious beliefs.
The Harriet The Spy star was determined to have died due to complications from diabetes mellitus, according to a statement from the New York City's Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
Officials cited lab results in declaring their findings to Dailymail.com. It was not immediately clear if the entertainer, who had struggled with health issues in the timeframe prior to her passing, had type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

In the timeframe prior to her death, Trachtenberg underwent a liver transplant, a procedure often sought out by people who have severe liver issues, with some as a result of longtime alcohol use (the most common reason people get liver transplants in the US, studies indicate).
Trachtenberg's cause of death was classified as 'natural,' medical examiners said in their latest report.
Authorities with the New York Police Department told Dailymail.com in February that they were summoned to a Manhattan apartment in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, where Trachtenberg was 'unconscious and unresponsive.'
Following Trachtenberg's tragic passing, authorities told Dailymail.com about the course of events that unfolded.
'On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at approximately 08:01 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an aided individual at 1 Columbus Place, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct,' police said in a statement,' police said.
They added, 'Upon arrival, officers observed a 39-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the victim deceased.
'Criminality is not suspected. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.'
Trachtenberg was romantically involved with boyfriend Jay Cohen, a partner at The Gersh Agency who is focused on film and distribution. They had been seeing one another since 2020 and would compliment one another on social media frequently.
The entertainment industry professional after his partner's passing told DailyMail.com that 'the family will not be commenting on the tragedy.'
Trachtenberg generally was not one to speak publicly on her private medical battles.
Badgley looked more jubilant when he was focused on celebrating his hit show's fifth and final season.
He was joined by his pregnant wife Domino Kirke, who highlighted her baby bump in a stunning crimson dress.
Badgley, who plays a charismatic serial killer on You, looked stylish in a medium-brown double-breasted suit that he wore unbuttoned.
He affectionately placed a hand on his wife's stomach as they posed.
Penn and Domino — who is the sister of Girls star Jemima Kirke — began dating in 2014 and tied the knot in 2017.
They welcomed their first child, a son named James, in August 2020, and the lovebirds announced they were expecting twins on March 1.

Blake Lively speaks out on Justin Baldoni's £294m defamation lawsuit dismissal

Blake Lively initially launched a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin Baldoni - who has strongly refuted the claims - after the pair worked together on It Ends With Us Blake Lively has spoken out for the first time since she was cleared in the $400million (£294million) defamation and extortion lawsuit filed by her It Ends with Us collaborator Justin Baldoni. The actress' powerful statement comes just hours after a judge dismissed Justin's case. Blake, 37, said on Instagram: "Last week, I stood proudly alongside 19 organisations united in defending women's rights to speak up for their safety. ‌ "Like so many others, I've felt the pain of a retaliatory lawsuit, including the manufactured shame that tries to break us. While the suit against me was defeated, so many don't have the resources to fight back." ‌ Blake initially launched a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin - who has strongly refuted the claims. However, he hit back with the $400million defamation claim against her, her publicist and husband Ryan Reynolds, all of whom have dismissed the accusations. But after the judge chucked out Justin's claims, a source close to the Los Angeles-born actress said: "Today's opinion is a total victory and a complete vindication for Blake Lively, along with those that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties dragged into their retaliatory lawsuit." The row happened after Blake and Justin, 41, starred together in It Ends With Us, a romcom released last year. The alleged sexual harassment occurred during production for that film, which Justin directed. But now, speaking after the dismissal, Blake added she was "more resolved than ever to continue to stand for every woman's right to have a voice in protecting themselves, including their safety, their integrity, their dignity and their story". The Gossip Girl actress, who has four children with Ryan Reynolds, "With love and gratitude for the many who stood by me, many of you I know. Many of you I don't. But I will never stop appreciating or advocating for you." Last month, Blake's pal Taylor Swift was dragged into the scandal when she was officially subpoenaed to appear as a witness. The pop star was delivered a legal notice by Justin's lawyer Bryan Freedman - a decision which had been slammed by her team as a tactic to create clickbait. In a move that appeared to please Blake and Taylor, it was confirmed Justin would no longer be calling on the Bad Blood hitmaker to appear as a witness. Bryan Freedman had claimed Blake had called on "her high-profile friends" including Taylor to "manipulate Justin at every turn." Taylor, who is close friends with Blake, licensed her hit song My Tears Ricochet to be used in the film but was not involved in the making of It Ends With Us, said her reps. Justin has denied all allegations brought about by Blake.

Billi FitzSimons is continuing to follow in her mother Lisa Wilkinson 's footsteps. Showing no nervousness over her debut national television appearance, Billi even had a 'fun fact' to offer viewers about the news. 'The fun fact of the day is that the New York Times has not lost a defamation lawsuit in more than 50 years, which for a media organisation of that size, is quite extraordinary,' she said. Billi rounded out her appearance with news that Aussie actress Sarah Snook won the best performance by a leading actress Tony for her turn in A Picture of Dorian Gray. 'Does this mean that she could be on track for an EGOT?' Billi opined. 'She has won an Emmy now the Tony. Could she also win a Grammy and an Oscar to get that coveted final big award? I mean, it's not one award - it's four awards but that status, I guess.' Billi's foray into breakfast television comes after she was promoted to editor-in-chief of The Daily Aus in 2024. 'I'm looking forward to growing our diverse content offerings, including podcasting, polling, video and newsletters,' she said when she announced her new role. Her mother got Billi her first job as a writer on news website Mamamia when she was still at university by calling in a favour with her old protégé Mia Freedman 'We have big plans this year, and I can't wait for you to see what we have in store.' Billi's mother started editing women's magazine Dolly at the age of 21, where she reportedly tripled the circulation. After this impressive feat, she was personally approached by billionaire news magnate Kerry Packer to head up women's lifestyle magazine, Cleo. Lisa went on to forge a successful career in television journalism, hosting the Today show and later becoming a panellist on The Project. However, her career has stalled amidst the ongoing fallout of her controversial interview with former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins, and has not been seen on TV in over a year. 'Billi had a job after school taking orders at Dominos Pizza for about four years from 14 or so, so she took pocket money as a bonus!' he said.

Justin Baldoni's lawsuit against Blake Lively dismissed by judge

US District Court Judge Lewis Liman's decision is the latest development in the bitter legal battle surrounding the dark romantic drama that includes Lively suing Baldoni in late December. Baldoni and production company Wayfarer Studios countersued in January for 400 million dollars (£294.9 million), accusing Lively and her husband, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds, of defamation and extortion. The judge ruled that Baldoni cannot sue Lively for defamation over claims she made in her lawsuit, because allegations made in a lawsuit are exempt from libel claims. Judge Liman also ruled that Baldoni's claims that Lively stole creative control of the film did not count as extortion under California law. While Lively was accused in the lawsuit of threatening to refuse to promote the film, Wayfarer does 'not allege facts showing that Lively had an obligation to promote the film or to approve marketing materials', Judge Liman wrote. Baldoni's legal team can revise the lawsuit if it wants to pursue different claims related to whether Lively breached a contract, the judge said. It Ends With Us, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestselling 2016 novel that begins as a romance but takes a dark turn into domestic violence, was released in August, exceeding box office expectations with a 50 million dollar (£36.8 million) debut. But the film's release was shrouded by speculation over discord between Lively and Baldoni. The judge also dismissed Baldoni's defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, which had reported on Lively's sexual harassment allegations. 'Today's opinion is a total victory and a complete vindication for Blake Lively, along with those that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties dragged into their retaliatory lawsuit, including Ryan Reynolds, (publicist) Leslie Sloane and The New York Times,' Lively's lawyers, Esra Hudson and Mike Gottlieb, said in a prepared statement. The lawyers said they 'look forward to the next round' of seeking lawyers' fees, treble damages and punitive damages. A spokesperson for The New York Times said they were 'grateful to the court for seeing the lawsuit for what it was: a meritless attempt to stifle honest reporting'. 'Our journalists went out and covered carefully and fairly a story of public importance, and the court recognized that the law is designed to protect just that sort of journalism,' Charlie Stadtlander said in a statement. Lively appeared in the 2005 film The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants and the TV series Gossip Girl from 2007 to 2012 before starring in films including The Town and The Shallows. Baldoni starred in the TV comedy Jane The Virgin, directed the 2019 film Five Feet Apart and wrote Man Enough, a book challenging traditional notions of masculinity.
