have been sighted in Periyattumalai in Coimbatore division after a decade, according to the second synchronized survey of Nilgiri tahrs in Tamil Nadu which concluded on Sunday. habitat recovery
.
Under the
Project Nilgiri Tahr
(launched in 2023), the four-day synchronized survey of Nilgiri tahr -- the state animal -- was conducted in 176 survey blocks of 14 forest divisions across the state. Herds were sighted with kids, according to a press release.

The survey included the collection of tahr pellets for parasitic and carnivore's scat for understanding the parasitic species presence and its life cycle in association with Nilgiri tahr.
Seven tahrs were sighted in the lowest elevation (240 m MSL) survey block in Peyanar Varaiyattu Mottai. This is one of the finest cliff and escarpment terrain blocks where tahr is using a dry thorny landscape.
'In the Mangaladevi survey block in Megamalai division, where the species was believed to have moved out, pellets of tahrs were recorded. Thus, the presence of the species is ascertained with evidence,' said M G Ganesan, project director, Project Nilgiri Tahr, who led the survey.
The collected pellets and carnivore scat samples in ethanol vials are to be sent for laboratory analysis, especially parasitic analysis in the Wildlife Division at TANUVAS (Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University).
Good population was sighted at Grass Hills National Park in Valparai and Mukurthi National Park in the Nilgiris. These two meta populations are vital for maintaining these fragile grasslands, said Supriya Sahu, additional chief secretary, department of environment, climate change and forest.
She said, 'Pavetta oblanceolate, a critically endangered flora species, was recorded in Anamalai during the survey.'
Ganesan said, 'After digitization, processing and interpretation of data will be done with research personnel and experts'.
Experts from TANUVAS, project scientists and a team from WWF participated in the survey with 800 field staffers covering a 2,000km distance.

‘Ist-ever' raptor survey in Pithoragarh records 24 species
Pithoragarh: The Uttarakhand forest department and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-India) jointly conducted a "first-of-its-kind" raptor survey in the Pithoragarh district, recording a total of 24 species. A follow-up survey focusing on the higher Himalayan region is planned for the near future, officials said on Wednesday. This initial phase of the survey was carried out from May 22 to 30 and covered areas below 2,500 meters in elevation. According to Abhimanyu Singh, divisional forest officer (DFO), Pithoragarh, the survey team included four members from WWF-India along with frontline forest staff including forest guards, foresters, and deputy rangers. "During the survey, 24 species of raptors were documented, including eagles, kites, falcons and buzzards," Singh said. Among the species observed were five resident vulture species, notably the critically endangered White-rumped Vulture (Gyps bengalensis) and Red-headed Vulture (Sarcogyps calvus). Their presence reaffirms the conservation significance of the Pithoragarh landscape for these apex avian predators, officials said. "This survey forms an important part of a broader initiative to establish robust baseline data on raptor diversity, distribution, and habitat use across the state. The findings will support future efforts in raptor conservation and behavioral studies," Singh added The next phase of the survey, focusing on areas above 2,500 meters in the Byas, Chaudas, Darma valleys and Milam region of Munsyari, will be conducted soon. "Raptors in the higher Himalayas differ significantly in terms of habitat, food chains and behaviour compared to those in lower elevations," the DFO said.

Application forms for veterinary science programmes to open today
The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has called for applications to its undergraduate veterinary programmes for the academic year 2025-26. The forms will be available on the university website from 10 a.m. on Monday till 5 p.m. on June 20, the admissions committee chairman has said. Candidates may log in to to apply. For online applications, guidelines, number of seats reserved for NRIs (Non-Resident Indians)/wards of NRIs/NRI sponsored and foreign nationals quota, candidates may visit There are 660 seats in seven colleges across the State. Admission to the programme is based on marks scored in Class 12. Aspirants must have taken biology, physics, and chemistry in Class 12. The marks scored in these subjects are used to calculate the cut-off for 200 marks. The university allocates 15% (60 seats) of the total seats to the Veterinary Council of India for students from other States. The university also sets aside 7.5% of the total seats for students who studied in government schools in the State. Students can opt for BVSc, Food Technology, Dairy Technology, and Poultry Technology. The duration of the course is five-and-half years for BVSc, including one year of internship, and four years for programmes. BVSc is offered in Madras Veterinary College (120 seats); Veterinary Colleges in Orathanadu, Namakkal, and Tirunelveli will admit 100 students each, The veterinary colleges in Salem, Theni and Tiruppur will each admit 80 seats, subject to approval by the Veterinary Council of India. A total of 100 seats are available in programmes of which 7.5% of seats are reserved for students from government schools. As much as 15% of the seats for (Food Technology - 40), Poultry Technology - 40) and (Dairy Technology 20) are reserved for candidates selected by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. To be eligible for B Tech programmes students must have stunned mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology.

Mangrove belt takes root along Buckingham Canal in Chennai
For years, the Buckingham Canal along East Coast Road, like much of Tamil Nadu's ecosystem, suffered from neglect and the spread of invasive species — most notably prosopis juliflora, which had overrun its banks. Now, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department has launched an initiative to restore a stretch of the canal by establishing a green belt of native mangrove species along its edge. 'A flourishing new mangrove forest has come up near Buckingham Canal in Kazhipattur in Chennai. Under the Green TN Mission,TN Forest Department had planted 12,500 mangrove seedlings from 5 different species last year,' wrote Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to Departments of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests in social media platform X. While overall mangrove cover in Tamil Nadu has increased over the past decade, as highlighted in a report by the Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management, Anna University, coverage in Chennai and Chengalpattu has always remained comparatively low, when measured against coastal districts like Cuddalore and Thiruvarur. To address this and recognising the role of mangroves as natural 'bioshields' in coastal zones, the Forest Department initiated restoration efforts by first removing the invasive prosopis near Navalur, behind the Hiranandani apartment complex. V.A. Saravanan, Chennai District Forest Officer, said to ensure the right foundation for the mangroves to flourish, soil and water samples were gathered and handed over to Sathyabama University. There, scientists examined the land's pH, salinity, and texture. A mangrove expert from Muthupet, Sankar, was also roped in. Following a site assessment, he confirmed the suitability of the area and recommended appropriate species based on the site's salinity and tidal conditions. Since mangroves require regular exposure to saline water, 87 channels, each 3 metres wide and 1 metre deep, were dug to allow tidal flow into the plantation site. Additionally, a 'fish bone' model was implemented, consisting of seven feeder canals connected to 80 distribution canals. This system enables the controlled movement of saltwater through the site to support mangrove growth, said Mr. Saravanan. A total of 12,500 mangrove saplings across six salt-tolerant species were planted: Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera cylindrica, Avicennia marina, Aegiceras corniculatum, Excoecaria agallocha, Acanthus illicifolius. The DFO said that maintenance of the mangrove forest will continue for six more months.
