Yankees avoid getting swept by Dodgers despite hitless night from Aaron Judge
Ryan Yarbrough limited baseball's best offense to four hits over six innings, Ben Rice hit a tiebreaking two-run homer and the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3 on Sunday to avoid getting swept for the first time this season.
The Dodgers outscored the Yankees 26-7 in winning the first two games of their World Series rematch, including an 18-2 rout Saturday. But right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the stalwart on a staff ravaged by injuries, labored from the start in front of 54,031, the largest crowd of the season at Dodger Stadium.
Yarbrough (3-0) allowed one run and struck out five in his fifth start of the year. He was a reliever for the Dodgers last season and received his World Series ring while in town.
Yamamoto (6-4) gave up a season-high seven hits while striking out two in 3 2/3 innings, both season lows. The Japanese right-hander permitted four runs and walked three.
New York's DJ LeMahieu had his first four-hit game since 2021.
The Yankees led 1-0 on Jasson Dominguez's RBI single in the first. Left fielder Andy Pages' throw sailed over the head of catcher Will Smith. Backing up Smith, Yamamoto made a pinpoint throw to second, but Kike Hernandez dropped the ball and Domínguez was safe.
Domínguez later left the game with a bruised left thumb.
Tommy Edman tied the game with a two-out homer in the second. After that, Yarbrough retired 13 of his next 15 batters. Pages and Max Muncy homered in the seventh.
The Yankees took a 4-1 lead in the third. Rice's 425-foot homer to center field scored Aaron Judge, who walked. Anthony Volpe singled, went to third on Austin Wells' single and scored on Yamamoto's wild pitch.
They extended the lead to 6-1 in the fifth on RBI singles by LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza off Lou Trivino. LeMahieu's RBI double made it 7-3 in the ninth.
Judge and Shohei Ohtani were hitless after becoming the first reigning MVPs in major league history to homer in the first inning of a game on Friday. Judge was 0 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts as the only Yankees player to go hitless. Ohtani went 0 for 4 with a strikeout. Key stats
The Yankees are 4-0 this season when facing a series sweep, having beaten Arizona, Detroit, Cleveland and the Dodgers. They're also one of three teams that hasn't been swept in a series of at least two games. ... Carlos Rodón was always known as an above-average MLB starter. After his impressive 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants, respectively, the Yankees decided to sign him to a six-year, $162 million contract in free agency. Rodón ended the season with a record of 3-8. Rodón spoke on The Show Podcast with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman about how mentally draining that season was for him. 'It was rough. Long drives home, a lot of time in my head, thinking about what's wrong, why can't I make this better.' Rodón said. 'I wish I was better at the time. But I wasn't. At that point, Rodón realized he needed to evolve in some way. One change he made was to his pitch arsenal. For most of his career, Rodón was known for just his fastball and slider. However, he has been able to add three new pitches: A curveball, a sinker, and a changeup. To most, that would seem difficult for a pitcher, let alone one who has been in the league for several years. But that is where Rodón's mental fortitude shone. 'I don't give up. I never really have,' Rodón said, 'it's just not in my nature.' That attitude helped him become a better player, and it has shown. Now with his new pitching repertoire, Rodón has had a stellar start to the season. He has the fewest Hits per nine innings in the American League. Lorenzo Musetti feared being defaulted after kicking ball at lineswoman
Lorenzo Musetti admitted that he was 'scared' about potentially being defaulted after accidentally kicking a tennis ball at a lineswoman during his win over Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals of the French Open. On Tuesday, the eighth seed Musetti held his nerve in treacherous windy conditions to close out a stellar 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over the 15th seed Tiafoe to reach the semi-finals in Paris for the first time in his career. The match, however, included a moment of jeopardy after he kicked a ball towards the back fence, which rebounded against the shoulder of an unflinching lineswoman. Musetti received a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. Alcaraz has now reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the last three years. Alcaraz had endured a complicated path to the quarter-finals, dropping a set in three of his four matches as his patience occasionally waned. Considering his wavering level, a quarter-final meeting with Paul was potentially dangerous. Paul is one of the best athletes on tour, behind Alcaraz himself, and he has made life hell for the Spaniard in the past with his own ability to seamlessly straddle defence and attack, as Alcaraz can. Bryce Harper returns to Phillies' lineup after missing 5 games with bruised right elbow
TORONTO (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper returned to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays after he missed the last five games with a bruised right elbow. Harper played first base and batted third in his first game since he was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of a game last week. The Phillies went 1-4 without Harper and fell out of first place in the NL East. Harper's elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2022 World Series, remains a sensitive area. In light of the injury, Harper plans to wear a protective guard on his right elbow upon his return. Harper is hitting .267 with eight homers and 33 RBIs in 54 games this season. Alec Bohm had shifted from third base to first base to replace Harper. Edmundo Sosa had taken over at third.
