Amazon Doubles Down on Dual Streaming Strategy in India With Prime Video and MX Player

Yahoo27-06-2025
In a wide-ranging conversation at the APOS summit in Bali on Wednesday, senior regional executives from Amazon laid out their vision for the company's twin-pronged streaming strategy in India, where the tech giant operates both the subscription-based Prime Video platform and the ad-supported service Amazon MX Player. The dual-service approach, they argued, is key to capturing India's vast and varied entertainment consumer base.
'India is a really heterogeneous and diverse country with customers having very different needs,' said Gaurav Gandhi, vp of Prime Video for Asia Pacific and MENA. 'Prime Video caters to customers who are subscription-ready, who have actually transitioned to streaming as their first or only choice of entertainment. Amazon MX Player is aimed at customers who are now transitioning from traditional media — TV or they are not subscription-ready yet — though they are still seeking high-quality premium content.'

Prime Video, which has achieved some local hits like The Family Man, Paatal Lok, and Made in Heaven, also isn't neglecting the big screen, still an essential entertainment pillar in cinema-mad India, which famously produces more movies per year than any other nation. The company is currently preparing for a bigger push into theatrical production through Amazon MGM Studios. Starting in 2026, the studio will release four to six original Indian films in theaters annually. The next Amazon MGM Studios feature, Anurag Kashyap's Nishaanchi, is slated to hit cinemas this September. The plan builds on Prime Video's past co-productions with leading Indian studios.
Nikhil Madhok, head of originals for Prime Video India, described the platform's creative strategy as 'premium, nuanced, and cinematic,' arguing that the company invests in production values and themes for its series to rival feature films — in order to cut through a content landscape that's hyper competitive. He cited shows like Khauf, a horror series that doubles as a meditation on urban trauma, and Dupahiya, which taps into nostalgic yearnings for rural India.
'We were very clear from the start that the local content in India had to be highly differentiated from television, but at the same time, when it lands up on the service, sitting next to our international content, it must be equally compelling, if not more,' Madhok explained.
Meanwhile, Amazon MX Player, which reaches over 250 million monthly users — many of them mobile-first— has carved a niche with local scripted and unscripted fare, dubbed international content, and escapist franchises like Hustler and Aashram, the latter of which has netted more than 200 million views.
Amazon acquired the MX Player service, a former rival, from India's Times conglomerate last year — in a deal pegged at about $100 million by local press — and promptly merged the service with its AVOD platform Amazon miniTV to create Amazon MX Player.
Amogh Dusad, head of content for Amazon MX Player, revealed plans for the service to boost its efforts in the buzzy micro-drama category. As part of a new initiative titled MX Fatafat, the company will produce a slate of serialized micro-dramas optimized for smartphones. Each series will comprise 80 to 100 episodes of one to two-minute vertical videos, ideal for brief moments of consumption throughout the day.
'MX Fatafat is a fresh approach, requiring unique writing and production methods, and we are looking forward to launch it later this year,' Dusad said.
The panel, moderated by Media Partners Asia executive director Vivek Couto, also touched on Amazon's broader investments in India's surging creator economy. Gandhi noted that over half of Prime Video's current originals feature first-time talent, and the company is actively co-producing short-form content with emerging creator voices through MX Fatafat.
With continued investment across both services, Gandhi stressed that Amazon remains bullish on the long-term potential of India's hyper-competitive streaming market, which has seen local champion JioStar emerge as the dominant player in recent months.
'It's still early days for streaming in India,' Gandhi said.

Jeff Bezos Pens Heartfelt Tribute After His Mom Jackie's Death At 78

Jeff Bezos has shared one of his most emotional messages yet. In a heartfelt social media post, the Amazon founder paid tribute to his mother, Jackie, who died peacefully at 78 after battling dementia. Bezos wrote with deep love and thanks, remembering the lessons she taught him, from becoming a mom at just 17 years old to inspiring decades of giving back. He said her final moments, spent surrounded by family, will stay with him forever. Jeff Bezos Pays Tribute To His Late Mom Bezos's mother, Jackie, tragically passed away in her Miami home on August 14, surrounded by the people who adored her. In the wake of the tragedy, Bezos took to Instagram to honor her legacy. He shared a photo of the 78-year-old alongside a lengthy tribute from Bezos scholars. In the caption, the 61-year-old remembered the woman who shaped his life with love, resilience, and endless encouragement. "Her adulthood started a little bit early when she became my mom at the tender age of 17. That couldn't have been easy, but she made it all work," Bezos began. He reflected on how his mother fully embraced the role of loving him with unwavering devotion, later bringing his father into their family and eventually adding his sister and brother to the group of people she cared for, protected, and supported. Bezos Says Jackie Died, Surrounded By Love The tech billionaire noted that this circle of love continued to grow throughout her life. He described Jackie as someone who gave far more than she ever asked for, with generosity and care at the heart of everything she did. Bezos then revealed the cause of Jackie's death, stating that she passed away after a "long fight with Lewy Body Dementia." However, according to him, she died while surrounded by her "children, grandchildren, and my dad." He said he believed she felt their love during her final moments and reflected on how fortunate they all were to have been part of her life. Bezos added that he would always keep her safe in his heart. Bezos's Wife Pays Tribute To Jackie Shortly after Jeff Bezos shared the tribute, fans and celebrities took to the comments section to extend their condolences. The businessman's wife, Lauren Sánchez, was not left out as she penned, "We will miss her so much. Love you." The helicopter pilot also reposted a tribute to Jackie from the Bezos scholars on her Instagram story. In their own tribute, the Bezos family foundation described Jackie as "a fierce advocate and supporter, filled with heart for others, and never accepting the status quo." They noted that her final days were a quiet close to a remarkable life that taught both friends and family "the true meaning of grit and determination, kindness, and service to others." Jeff Bezos's Mother Was A Loving And Sacrificial Woman The foundation provided further details about the unending love and sacrifices Jackie made for her family, especially her children. "She made countless trips to Radio Shack for Jeff, spent numerous hours supervising cheerleading practices with Christina, and hauled drums in the back of the family station wagon for Mark," they revealed. The tribute also explained that Jackie's care extended far beyond her own children, as she became a mother figure to many others over the years. Friends of her children often found her home to be a warm and welcoming place, where they always felt safe and valued. "She had a gift for making people feel like family," the post continued. Whether it was serving a plate of food, offering heartfelt advice, or simply listening, Jackie created an environment where everyone felt seen and cared for. Jackie's Invested In The Fight Against Cancer The tribute also noted that Jeff Bezos's mother's generosity extended far beyond the Bezos Family Foundation, as she dedicated herself to major charitable efforts in medical research and public health. She worked closely with Seattle's Fred Hutch Cancer Center, playing a role in advancing groundbreaking immunotherapy treatments that help the body fight cancer from within. Even after these milestones, her commitment to supporting such innovations never faded. Family was at the heart of everything she did. As a grandmother, she found pure joy in seeing her family expand, making sure her grandchildren inherited her values of kindness, strength, and togetherness. One of her most treasured traditions was "Camp Marmie," a lively summer gathering where her eleven grandchildren spent time exploring, solving challenges, and sharing laughter, creating lasting family memories. Unfortunately, in 2020, Jackie received her Lewy Body Dementia diagnosis, and thanks to her husband, Mike, and their children, she received constant love and support before her demise. Amid Jackie's death, the family has asked the public to "support a nonprofit organization that is meaningful to you or to perform a simple act of kindness in her memory."

'Alien' among us 👾

"In space, no one can hear you scream." That was the tagline of the original 1979 sci-fi classic "Alien." More than 45 years later, you're going to hear all the screaming because the long-running franchise is back in a whole new way – and on our home planet – in the new TV series "Alien: Earth." Even if Facehuggers and Chestbusters freak you out, that's a definite recommendation for this weekend, as is the new Spike Lee flick "Highest 2 Lowest," the iconic director's fifth collaboration with Denzel Washington and a remake of Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low." And we got any Losties in the Watch Party crew? Daniel Kae Kim is back in a Prime Video spy show. Now on to the good stuff: See a new take on an old fave with the sci-fi series 'Alien: Earth' The "Alien" franchise has gone a lot of different directions in five decades – not all of then stellar. Last year's movie "Alien: Romulus" went back to the roots of the OG films, and Noah Hawley's outstanding TV show "Alien: Earth" also does wonders with the series by taking the action from space to Earth with a crash-landed spacecraft (carrying nothing exactly pleasant) and corporations competing to unlock immortality. In her ★★★½ review, TV critic Kelly Lawler writes that the show harks back to the halcyon days of Ridley Scott's first movie with "eight episodes of terror, both comfortingly familiar and disturbingly novel." There is an interesting timeliness to "Alien: Earth," too: While the iconic "Alien" Xenomorph does show up, the series also explores powerful tech companies vying for dominance. "The show is about humanity being trapped between its monster past when we all were just food and its AI future, and in both cases, something's out to kill us," Hawley tells my bud Marco della Cava in a discussion of the drama's modern themes. Celebrate Spike Lee and Denzel Washington's reunion for 'Highest 2 Lowest' When Spike Lee and Denzel Washington get together, they don't miss. "He Got Game"? Best basketball movie ever. Washington snagged an Oscar nod for the great "Malcolm X." "Inside Man" was a standout heist thriller. "Mo' Better Blues" is a cool jazz flick. And their latest collab "Highest 2 Lowest" − which stars Denzel Washington as a music mogul with a moral dilemma – reunites them as older but wiser artists for a love letter to New York City, music and sports that proves each still has a lot of game. (Peep my ★★★ review.) If you're wanting to stick closer to home for new movies, there's a bunch hitting streaming services this week, including Netflix thriller "Night Always Comes" and "The Legend of Ochi." Plus: "Superman" is out in digital release now and that's a super-fun time. Stream Daniel Dae Kim's Amazon espionage show 'Butterfly' "Lost" fan favorite Daniel Dae Kim has a pretty exciting 2025, being named to Time's list of the 100 most influential people in the world and earning a Tony Award nomination for his role in the revival of "Yellow Face." But even though he's busy, Kim stopped by our New York City studio to chat with my man Ralphie Aversa about his new Prime Video espionage thriller "Butterfly." Kim plays a former U.S. intelligence agent living in South Korea when an enemy agent tries to kill him and has to confront his past to save his family. The opening of the show features Kim belting out The Killers' "Mr. Brightside," but in real life, the actor doesn't go near a karaoke mike. "I do love 'Mr. Brightside,' " he jokes. "It doesn't matter who starts it − everyone finishes it, and that to me is a sign of a good karaoke song." In addition to "Butterfly" and the aforementioned "Alien" show, the Kansas City Chief docuseries "The Kingdom" and a "Snoopy" musical make Kelly's roundup of streaming TV premieres this week.
