Centre, Delhi & local bodies working as one team, true strength of a triple-engine govt: CM
In a bid to enhance the last-mile connectivity in the city, the Delhi government on Friday flagged off 400 electric buses under the Delhi Vehicle Interconnector (DEVI) scheme.
'The Central government, the Delhi government, and local bodies are working as one team — this is the true strength of a 'triple-engine' government. We are united in our commitment to transform an unorganised Delhi into a better city. Today is a proud moment for all of us as we launch 400 new DEVI electric buses on Delhi's streets,' said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta as she inaugurated the buses at an event held in Kushak Nallah Depot in Seva Nagar in New Delhi. She added that DEVI buses are a major step towards addressing the challenge of last-mile connectivity in the Capital.
The event was attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State for Road Transport Harsh Malhotra, Delhi ministers Pravesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, among others.
The city will get 2,080 e-buses by the end of this year, the CM asserted.
Underlining that 45% of pollution is caused by vehicular emissions, Gupta said, 'The solution cannot only rely on public transport, but private vehicles must also be converted into electric vehicles. To encourage this shift, the Delhi government will soon introduce a new EV policy with attractive rebates and incentives for private vehicle owners.' Last year, the previous Aam Aadmi Party government had launched a trial for Mohalla buses to ensure better connectivity.
The BJP, however, after coming to power in February, renamed the Mohalla Bus Service as DEVI buses. 'Delhi has always been blessed with the divine grace of Maa Durga. Despite many disasters and challenges, this city has always stood resilient and continued to grow. It is in the honour of this spirit of faith and strength that we have named these new electric buses DEVI,' said the CM.
The electric buses are equipped with advanced features like CCTV cameras, a live tracking system, and panic buttons. The buses also have facilities for the differently-abled.

Delhi CM inspects slum clusters in north-west Delhi
Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday inspected several slum clusters in northwest Delhi's Shalimar Bagh and other assembly constituencies and inaugurated development projects aimed at improving the living conditions of thousands of residents in Nehru Camp, Haiderpur, and Ekta Camp in Pitampura. Denying claims made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, she also said that no slum will be demolished without first providing permanent housing to its residents. 'No slum will be demolished without providing proper housing to its residents. We will not let anyone spread fear and rumours. FIRs will be filed against those spreading false information about demolitions,' she said. This came even as AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj held meetings on Sunday with residents of JJ clusters in Adarsh Nagar and Model Town, claiming that residents were terrified and unsure when the bulldozers would reach their doorsteps. 'We discussed in depth how the newly elected BJP government in Delhi is demolishing the jhuggis of thousands of downtrodden and working-class families, rendering them way the BJP-led Delhi government is targeting jhuggi settlements one after another, it seems the party does not want poor and working-class people to live in Delhi,' Bhardwaj said. He added that the AAP would protest against the demolitions in JJ clusters of Delhi at Jantar Mantar on June 29 and appeal to the central government to take appropriate action on this issue. Gupta said that most anti-encroachment actions are court-directed and aimed at removing illegal obstructions that affect public movement or traffic. She said that redevelopment of all slums in Delhi will be carried out in a phased manner. 'It is our responsibility to ensure that they enjoy the same facilities as other citizens of the city. Proper sewer lines and drainage systems will be installed to resolve the problems of waterlogging and unhygienic conditions. Continuous supply of clean drinking water, construction and improvement of roads, and adequate street lighting will also be prioritised,' Gupta said. She added that to promote public health and sanitation, community toilets and bathing facilities will be constructed at key public locations, with an emphasis on their regular maintenance. A robust solid waste management system will also be installed and vehicles will be deployed to ensure timely and efficient waste disposal. Gupta also launched several civic works on Sunday, including the construction of Jan Suvidha Kendras, road improvements, drainage upgrades, and the creation of safe recreational spaces for children. Gupta also laid emphasis on sanitation infrastructure, announcing a 24-seater public convenience centre at Nehru Camp, Haiderpur and inspected another proposed 20-seater facility near U and V blocks of the JJ Cluster. 'The Jan Suvidha Kendra at Nehru Camp will directly benefit women, children and senior citizens who have long suffered due to lack of access to safe toilets,' Gupta said. She added that these facilities are critical not only for convenience, but also for public health and dignity. 'This is an important step toward our vision of 'Swachh Delhi, Swasth Delhi',' she said. Accompanied by local MLAs and officials from the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Gupta also inaugurated CC pavement work in Ekta Camp, Pitampura. 'For too long, people here have walked through muddy, uneven lanes. These new pavements are not just about roads — they're about restoring dignity and safety,' Gupta said. The CM's inspection also included on-ground reviews of pipeline laying work, road resurfacing, and park maintenance. She promised that clean, well-lit parks equipped with swings and play areas would be created or restored in these densely populated neighbourhoods.

Delhi: Vasant Kunj tunnel work likely to start in 2026
The construction of a new underground tunnel connecting Shiv Murti–Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj in south Delhi is likely to begin early next year, with all clearances for the project in advanced stages, officials said on Sunday. The five-kilometre-long tunnel will redefine commute in the congested parts of south Delhi, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday. The tunnel will be built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. The tunnel is part of a larger infrastructure push under the 'double engine government', Gupta added. 'This tunnel is the foundation for the Delhi of the future. We are committed to making Delhi congestion-free and clean. The construction of this tunnel will reduce the burden on roads, eliminate traffic signals and save fuel,' Gupta said. The tunnel will provide a seamless, signal-free connection between south Delhi and Dwarka-Gurugram, easing pressure on key stretches such as Nelson Mandela Road, Mahipalpur, Rangpuri, and the chronically jammed National Highway 48 near Dhaula Kuan and Rao Tula Ram Marg, officials said. According to officials, the tunnel will consist of two underground tubes — one for each direction — with three lanes each, allowing for six-lane traffic movement beneath the city's surface. Apart from decongesting existing road networks, the tunnel is also expected to play a critical role in pollution mitigation by offering a faster, signal-free route and reducing idling time for vehicles, officials said. Gupta described the project as a symbol of effective Centre-state coordination, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari for their support. 'The national capital is now reaping the benefits of double-engine governance,' Gupta said. Earlier this week, the Delhi government had announced that six major infrastructure projects worth ₹24,000 crore have been approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Officials involved with the project said the tunnel will be equipped with modern safety and operational technologies, including electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, CCTV surveillance and emergency exits. Once constructed, the tunnel is expected to connect central and east Delhi to multiple major highways such as the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, NH-48 (Delhi-Jaipur Highway), and NH-709B (Delhi-Dehradun Expressway), via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway. In December 2023, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) had submitted a report to MoRTH saying that residents of south Delhi had raised concerns that the tunnel could have an adverse impact on forest and environment, and possibly damage houses in the area. According to a previous report of the ministry, the tunnel will pass through 5.825 hectares of area, which comes under the southern Ridge, and another 1.68 hectares of a deemed forest, for which permission has been applied under the Forest Conservation Act (FCA), 1980 for felling of 417 trees, against which compensatory afforestation will be done. In November 2022, the Delhi's Ridge Management Board (RMB) cleared the project, and further recommended it to the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), which cleared it in June 2023, and the Supreme Court gave the final approval in October last year.

Ludhiana West bypoll: Arora faces criticism for forgetting name of freedom fighter
As campaigning continues for the Ludhiana West byelection that to be held on June 19, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate and Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora is facing strong criticism from opposition parties for not remembering the full name of freedom fighter Kartar Singh Sarabha during a public speech. The incident happened on Saturday during an AAP public meeting held in Sarabha Nagar, a prominent area in Ludhiana named after Ghadar movement hero Kartar Singh Sarabha. Shopkeepers in the area have long demanded that the local market should be renamed in his honour. During an event, in which chief minister Bhagwant Mann was also present, MP Arora in his speech referred to the revolutionary as 'Shaheed Sarabha Singh', forgetting his full name — Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha — who was executed by the British at just 19 and admired by Bhagat Singh. A video of the speech has gone viral, showing MP Arora struggling to recall the name and being corrected by others on stage. MP Arora then said, 'I am sure CM saab will announce it soon and Sarabha's statue has already been ordered. It will be installed soon.' Following the video, opposition leaders sharply attacked the AAP. Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira posted on X (formerly Twitter), 'This proves AAP is full of fake revolutionaries. Their candidate doesn't even know who Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha is. Leaders like Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann are using our martyrs' names for politics.' The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also expressed outrage. Harjinder Singh Bobby Garcha, president of the Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Foundation and SAD spokesperson, called it 'extremely shameful'. He said, 'How can someone who doesn't even know our martyrs protect their legacy or serve Punjab and Punjabi culture?' Garcha further warned that if MP Arora does not apologise publicly, the foundation will protest his campaign. He also claimed AAP is bringing outsiders into Punjab who have no knowledge or respect for the state's culture and history. 'This shows the real face of AAP. They are insulting Punjab's martyrs and traditions,' Garcha added.
