Axiom-4 launch: Crew safety paramount, Isro insisted in review meets

CAPE CANAVERAL (FLORIDA): Hours after SpaceX revealed late Monday that it had detected multiple snags in the Falcon-9 rocket that was to launch the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) crew aboard the Dragon spacecraft, a series of meetings unfolded Tuesday and in all of them, Isro asserted that crew safety was paramount. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is part of the Ax-4 crew and is set to become only the second Indian to go to space. As part of the launch preparation, all nine engines of the first stage were to be tested together. During one of those tests, it was found that a control actuator had a glitch, and during static test fire, a liquid oxygen (LOX) leak was detected. Once this information came out on Monday, Isro was part of a meeting with all the stakeholders, where it strongly articulated its concerns about astronaut safety and wanted detailed discussions before greenlighting the launch. "That Isro team was led by chairman V Narayanan helped, given his experience, especially with cryogenic propulsion systems. After all, he helped build it for India. Isro had requested that all issues with the rocket needed to be 'resolved' before they went ahead with the launch," a source said. When contacted, Narayanan told TOI: "All I can say at this juncture is that for India and Isro, the safety of our astronaut and crew is paramount. Mission partners have decided to correct the leak and carry out necessary validation tests before clearing for the launch." When SpaceX vice-president of build and flight reliability, William Gerstenmaier, first revealed the information about the leak during a mission readiness review late on Monday, the issue was not categorised as something concerning. He said it would be resolved and the rocket would be ready for launch. However, after subsequent meetings between all partners involved in the mission, SpaceX and the other partners decided to scrub the launch, seeking "additional time for teams to repair the LOX leak.

District election office highlights actions for model code of conduct enforcement and expenditure monitoring in Ludhiana West byelection.

Ludhiana: The district election office on Wednesday reported a sweeping crackdown on poll code violations and reinforced expenditure monitoring in assembly constituency-64 (Ludhiana West), as part of efforts to ensure a free and fair byelection. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In an official statement, the administration said that enforcement of the model code of conduct —in effect since May 25 under (ECI) directives — is confined strictly to the Ludhiana West constituency. Ten round-the-clock teams have removed nearly 9,700 unauthorised campaign materials so far, including 9,398 from public spaces and 293 from private property. Of these, 656 violations were recorded in the first 48 hours of enforcement. The municipal corporation is forwarding political advertisement bills regularly to the expenditure monitoring cell to ensure accurate tallying against candidates' limits. The spending cap remains at ₹40 lakh for each candidate, as stipulated under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Expenditure oversight is being led by ECI-appointed observer Ashok Kumar Indana, a senior IRS officer. As part of a three-stage scrutiny process, 12 out of 14 candidates submitted their expense records during the first inspection held on June 9. Notices were issued to the two absentees. Further inspections are scheduled for June 13 and 17. The district has deployed 12 flying squad teams (FSTs) — operating in three shifts, exceeding the minimum required number — for rapid response to violations. Officials said public participation through the cVIGIL mobile app has been robust, with 538 complaints received and addressed within the mandated 100-minute response window. The election office has called on all stakeholders to rely solely on verified sources for information and continue using the cVIGIL app, available on Android and iOS, to report any breaches in real time. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to conducting the by-election with "absolute integrity, transparency, and adherence to the law." MSID:: 121779613 413 |
