Russell Brand granted bail after first court appearance over sexual assault charges

Express Tribune02-05-2025

British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been granted bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on charges of rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault involving four different women.
The court appearance on April 29 lasted around 12 minutes, during which Brand confirmed his name, address, and age—49 as reported by the BBC.
Brand was photographed arriving in shades and a black shirt, looking composed as he stepped into the courtroom for the first time since the Metropolitan Police formally charged him following allegations brought to light in a Channel 4 and The Times exposé nearly two years ago.
The charges include:
Rape of a woman in Bournemouth in 1999, indecent assault of a woman in Westminster in 2001, oral rape and sexual assault in Westminster in 2004, and
a separate case of sexual assault in Westminster between 2004 and 2005.
Court documents also detail a disturbing 2001 incident where Brand allegedly 'grabbed [a woman's] arm and dragged her towards a male toilet,' among other actions.
Following news of the charges, Brand whose current residence is listed in Oxfordshire, previously addressed his followers on social media, stating:
'I've never engaged in non-consensual activity. I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.'
He also admitted:
'I was a drug addict, sex addict and an imbecile. But I was never a rapist.'
Brand is next scheduled to appear at The Old Bailey on May 30, where the legal proceedings will continue.

Migrants flee N Ireland unrest

Fireworks thrown at Riot Police illuminate the road during a third night of anti-immigration demonstrations in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. Photo: AFP Foreign nationals hid in wardrobes and attics to escape a wave of unrest which has rocked a Northern Ireland town, police said Thursday, calling for the protests to end and warning rioters they would face arrest. "Stop this violence," said Northern Ireland police chief Jon Boutcher. "We will come after you. We will arrest you. We will prosecute you successfully." He was speaking after three nights of unrest in the town of Ballymena, some 30 miles (48 kilometres) northwest of Belfast. The clashes erupted on Monday night after two teenagers were arrested for the alleged attempted rape of a young girl at the weekend. Police have not confirmed the ethnicity of the teenagers, who remain in custody and had asked for a Romanian interpreter in court. After another barrage of petrol bombs, bricks and bottles, the crowds eventually dispersed late Wednesday without a repeat of the chaotic scenes seen on Monday and Tuesday when houses and businesses in areas where Romanian families live were torched. A total of 13 people have now been arrested, and 41 police officers injured, though most of the injuries are not severe. Three teenage boys aged 15, 17 and 18 were due to appear in court on Thursday having been charged with rioting, said police. Boutcher described the riots as "wanton, disgraceful criminal behaviour that is absolutely race motivated", speaking at a news conference Thursday. Police had helped evacuate foreign national families hiding in attics and wardrobes in their homes "even though they had done nothing wrong", he said. "They are not criminals. They contribute positively to society here and are well integrated," he added. Clonavon Road, where most of the riots happened in a neighbourhood known for having a large population of eastern Europeans, was almost deserted on Thursday. Many of the houses were damaged, and British, English or Northern Irish flags hung from most windows, AFP reporters saw. Some had signs saying they were Filipino residents.

Comedian David Walliams sparks outrage with Nazi salute during BBC's Would I Lie To You? recording

Comedian David Walliams has sparked strong criticism, including from the BBC, after making Nazi salutes during a recording of the panel show Would I Lie To You? earlier this week. Walliams, also a former judge on Britain's Got Talent, performed the offensive gestures during a segment when another panellist joked about injuring their wrist while waving. According to The Times, Walliams mimicked the wave before raising his arm in the Nazi salute. The incident occurred at Pinewood Studios on Tuesday, where the Christmas special of the show was being filmed. Audience members were reportedly stunned by the gesture, with one journalist, Sebastian Topan, who was present at the recording, describing the atmosphere as 'uncomfortable and weird.' Topan told BBC News, "Some other panellist was talking when David Walliams started doing the Nazi salute... [There were] patches of quietened gasps and awkward half-laughs and broken clapping." Following the initial salute, Walliams reportedly repeated the gesture and added a sexual hand movement, further unsettling the audience. Host Rob Brydon informed Walliams that the show would be aired before the 9 p.m. watershed, suggesting the segment would be edited out. Banijay U.K., which produces Would I Lie To You?, condemned the act, stating that any attempt at humor involving such a 'deeply offensive gesture' is 'completely unacceptable in any context.' The company confirmed the segment would not be aired and apologized to the audience for any distress caused. The BBC also issued an apology, emphasizing that the gesture was 'completely unacceptable.' This controversy adds to Walliams' history of public backlash, as he left Britain's Got Talent in 2022 after a recording of him insulting contestants surfaced.
