East Lothian woman forced child to take cold showers and live in filthy home
An East Lothian woman assaulted and forced a young child to take cold showers during a seven-year campaign of abuse.
Stacey Peters, 31, also allowed the child to live in filthy conditions when the youngster stayed over at her former home in Musselburgh.
Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told the furniture and window sills in Peters' house were covered in cat excrement and the rooms were strewn with rubbish.
The court heard the property was 'not fit for a child to live in' and at one point was so dirty police were forced to seal the house off until improvements were made.
Prosecutor Xander van der Scheer told the court investigations began after the child disclosed to a teacher at their primary school that the woman 'hits her and [they] hit her back' when she stayed at the property.
The youngster showed the teacher scratches on their arm and the school's head teacher was informed and child protection procedures were put in place in November 2023.
The child was subsequently interviewed by social services where they said Peters would 'put [them] in a cold shower when [they] misbehaved' and she would also strike them on the bottom.
The child told the social worker they had to put packets of frozen vegetables on their behind to soothe the injuries. Police attended at Peters' home and found the flat to be 'full of rubbish and cat litter everywhere'.
Mr van der Scheer said officers found cat excrement on the furniture and window sills and a decision was made to seal the property off for cleaning after they deemed it 'not fit for a child to live in'.
The court heard on one occasion the child was found in tears while locked out and sitting on the doorstep of the property while Peters was inside.
The court was told the child does not visit or stay over at the woman's home anymore and is said to be 'scared' of her.
Peters, who has since moved to Whitecraig, East Lothian, pleaded guilty to wilfully neglecting the child in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health when she appeared at the capital court last month.
Court papers also state Peters forced the child to live in an environment detrimental to their health, on one occasion locked them out of the property, forced them to have cold showers and struck and scratched them, all between February 2016 and November 2023.

She returned to the dock for sentencing where lawyer David Allan, defending, admitted his client is facing 'a serious charge' and that 'the custody threshold has been met in this case'.
But Mr Allan said the social work report was positive and added: 'Ms Peters takes full responsibility for her behaviour and does not seek to minimise it in any way.'
Sheriff Fergus Thomson said: 'I have listened very carefully as to what has been said on your behalf and this is a sad situation altogether.
'These are serious offences but there is an alternative to custody here.'
Peters was placed on a community payback order where she will be supervised for the next 12 months and will have to carry out 90 hours of unpaid work in the community as punishment.

Edinburgh mum 'couldn't help but laugh' when seagulls dive-bombed her son
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An Edinburgh mum has shared the full video of the hilarious moment her son's lunch was snatched out of his hand by a seagull. The unfortunate incident took place on Musselburgh High Street when Nikki Reynolds was picking up her son, Sonny, from karate practice. The family lives in Bonaly but travels to East Lothian for training most days. Nikki caught some hilarious footage on her car's dashboard camera when Sonny was about to get in the car. Nikki told EdinburghLive: "He had been helping at his local karate club so went to Subway for lunch after and I was just outside waiting for him. "I saw him coming and glanced in the mirror wondering why he looked so confused. When he got in the car with his empty wrapper I was so pleased we have good dash cams on the car. "He literally had the one bite and it was gone. "I asked him what he was doing when he got in the car and he just chucked the wrapper down and said 'seagull took my subway'. I just couldn't help but laugh. And to be honest even now watching the video, it just makes me laugh. That's me laughing in the video [on TikTok] too." The video shows Sonny carrying his sandwich when a tenacious seagull dive bombs and snatches the meal right out of his hands. He appears stunned by the turn of events and halts in his tracks. Adding insult to injury, a flock of three more seagulls converge on the scene of the crime to squabble over the scattered chips on the ground. The hilarious clip wracked up over 615,000 views on TikTok. Nikki claims the seagulls in Musselburgh are notorious for wreaking havoc on locals. She said: "They are so bad over that way, I daren't get out the car sometimes as there's so many. But with the comments on TikTok I'm not the only one to think that." Locals took to the comments on Nikki's TikTok post to express their delight at the video. Some also compared notes on the notorious Musselburgh seagulls. (Image: Supplied) One said: "Musselburgh has some of the most ruthless seagulls in the country. Funny watching them terrorise all the kids down seeing the ducks". Another warned: "Beware lad, Musselburgh seagulls take no prisoners and D. G. A. F." A third viewer shared: "Absolutely awesome. The look on his face is priceless" while another joked: "A planned attack, they know who's never been attacked." Some even shared stories of similar experiences at the hands of local seabirds. A resident posted: "Sane happened to me, finished work and thought I'd grab myself a Greggs pasty. "I was walking along eating it when I could hear swooshing behind me! I turned to be me with the biggest seagull looking me square in the eye. It then took the pasty while I ran away screaming".
