Both habeas petitions — one concerning Lanez's driver not testifying and another tied to a new statement from a security guard for Kelsey Nicole Harris during trial — were denied.
While these specific claims will not move forward, Lanez's main appeal remains active and is scheduled for oral argument next Monday (August 18) in Los Angeles.

Little League World Series pleads for fans to not bet on games involving children
Gambling has become ubiquitous at nearly every level of every sport these days. The organizers of the Little League World Series would like it to stay away their tournament. With the LLWS in full swing, Little League International released a statement Thursday stating there is no place for sports betting on its games or any other youth competition. The full statement: While Little League® International continues to monitor the complexity and ever-evolving world of sports betting, we feel strongly that there is no place for betting on Little League games or on any youth sports competition. Little League is a trusted place where children are learning the fundamentals of the games and all the important life lessons that come with having fun, celebrating teamwork, and playing with integrity, and no one should be exploiting the success and failures of children playing the game they love for their own personal gain. The 2025 Little League World Series is currently taking place with its championship game scheduled for Aug. 24. While no major sportsbooks offer odds on a tournament that features children ranging from 10 to 12 years old, the same is not true for unregulated, overseas sportsbooks. The brand manager of one such firm, in its fourth year of offering LLWS odds, told the Patch it will see more bets on Little League games than "any professional tennis or soccer match over the next two weeks." The floodgates opened for sports betting with a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2018, with each state allowed to determine the legality and advertisements flooding the media environment. MLB, the NFL, the NBA and many more leagues all have official gambling partners. The transition has definitely not been without incident. Setting aside the ethical concerns of gambling addictions and personal bankruptcies, problems in baseball have included players sidelined for allegedly tipping the scales on micro-bets involving their pitches and horrific death threats against players they supposedly let down. It's understandable why Little League doesn't want that influence to reach its players, with all of its advertisers banned from using any sort of gambling imagery. Still, the bettors are clearly out there.

These three new Game Pass games are worth cancelling your weekend plans to play (August 15-17)
The entire internet is currently obsessed with the Battlefield 6 beta, and this is the last weekend you can jump in and see what all the fuss is about. But you might be setting yourself up for disappointment since that game won't be hitting Xbox Series X until October, so you might as well rip the band-aid off now and see what new games have been added to Game Pass. Don't think of this as a consolation prize, either, because I would cancel my plans to play any of these games this weekend regardless. There's an amazing co-op shooter to test your teamwork in, a new roguelike just begging to be broken, and a surprise return of two amazing retro titles. Aliens: Fireteam Elite We all know and love Left 4 Dead, but aside from Back 4 Blood from many of the original developers, not that many games have attempted to iterate on that survival co-op formula. Not only does Alens: Fireteam Elite pull it off, but the Aliens franchise is a perfect fit for it. And with Alien: Earth hitting streaming this month, why not fully engross yourself in the world of Xenomorphs? Squads of three Marines will fight their way through four campaigns on planet LV-895 against waves of Xenomorphs, Prowlers, Spitters, and more. There are 7 classes to pick from and level up, with tons of weapons and ways to customize your character. This isn't a walk in the park, so make sure you and your friends are well prepared or you might end up saying…game over, man. Sorry. Recommended Videos Aliens: Fireteam Elite is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC. 9 Kings If you've never heard of 9 Kings, you're not alone. This roguelike kingdom builder came out earlier this year and completely flew under my radar until I saw it was coming to Game Pass as an Early Access game. The game is played on a grid where you place cards to build your kingdom, grow an army, and survive through as many decades of time as possible. Each King you can play as comes with their own unique deck of buildings, troops, and so on, but you can collect more cards by defeating rival Kings. Like any roguelike, 9 Kings is all about systems and synergies, allowing you to make completely busted runs. 9 Kings is available now on PC. Heretic + Hexen At the beginning of this month, only the two games I talked about above were scheduled to be coming to Game Pass, but we got a welcome surprise when Heretic + Hexen dropped with no prior warning onto the service. Anyone who was playing games back in the early '90s will at least recognize these names, but for everyone else, this is a remastered package of Doom-style FPS games originally made by Raven Software. Unlike many direct clones of that age, these two games had a distinct theme, the ability to aim vertically, character classes, and even an inventory. Between all the content of the originals, plus two new episodes added with this release, you're getting 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps, so there's plenty to dig into. Heretic + Hexen is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.

Federal judge sentences California man to 9 years for role in murder-for-hire plot
A federal judge sentenced a California man to nine years in prison for his role in a 2023 murder-for-hire plot, prosecutors announced Thursday. Jagninder Singh Boparai, 49, of Manteca, had been convicted of conspiring to use interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire, the U.S. Attorney's Office Eastern District of California said. Boparai was among three men who conspired to murder another man they were involved in a dispute with, court records show. The other two co-conspirators were 47-year-old Ramesh Kumar Birla, Jr., of the Bay Area city of Dublin, and 51-year-old Shaminderjit Singh Sandhu, of the Central Valley city of Tracy. Prosecutors said that, in February 2023, Boparai met with someone he believed to be a hitman at a Starbucks in Manteca. That individual was actually a confidential informant for the FBI. Boparai told the individual that his first job was to assault a different person the trio also had a dispute with, to prove his trustworthiness. Once complete, Boparai said he would give him another job. The day after that meeting, the two met again, with Boparai offering the informant $6,000 for the assault. That March, Boparai met with the informant again, this time accompanied by Birla and another individual. Prosecutors said Boparai gave the informant $1,000 as a down payment for the assault. At a later meeting, the informant showed Boparai a staged photo depicting the supposed assault, with the victim lying on the ground covered in blood, dirt and bruises. Prosecutors said Boparai told the informant he liked the photo and offered two more jobs — one being a commercial robbery and the other involving making a person "disappear." "This defendant met on five separate occasions with a person he thought to be a hitman and provided payments for the services he desired in order to 'teach a lesson' to two of his enemies," U.S. Attorney Eric Grant said. "Fortunately, there was no hitman, and today's sentence teaches a lesson that the U.S. Attorney's Office will use all its tools to bring to justice those who endanger the safety of the public." Later that March, Boparai gave the informant a $10,000 down payment for the hit, while Sandhu provided the informant with the victim's address. Prosecutors said Boparai told the informant the victim needed to disappear without any evidence. Sandhu and Birla met with the informant on March 24, 2023, instructing him to kill the victim and take his remains to Mexico in a suitcase, prosecutors said. Boparai, whom Sandhu and Birla told the informant was out of town, was observing the meeting from a nearby car. Exactly one week later, Boparai, Sandhu and Birla were arrested and have remained in federal custody ever since. Sandhu has previously pleaded guilty to the same charge as Boparai. He is set to be sentenced in November and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Charges remain pending against Birla. He is next scheduled to appear in court in October.
