Operation Bluestar anniversary: Radical outfits raise pro-Khalistan slogans

Hindustan Times06-06-2025
Amritsar, Pro-Khalistan slogans were on Friday raised by supporters and activists of radical Sikh outfits at the Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of Sikhs, while a peaceful bandh was observed around the Golden Temple and interior walled city on the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar.
Dal Khalsa activists were seen holding placards bearing portraits of slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and also Khalistani flags.
The entire periphery of the Golden Temple near THE Akal Takh echoed with pro-Khalistan slogans.
Pro-Khalistan slogans were raised by activists of outfits, including the Dal Khalsa, former MP Simranjit Singh Mann-led Shiromani Akali Dal , his associate and former MP Dhian Singh Mand, at the Akal Takht.
Operation Bluestar was a military operation carried out in 1984 to flush out militants from the Golden Temple.
Officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, while reading 'ardas' , said all Sikh outfits should unitedly apply untiring efforts for the release of 'Bandhi Singhs' .
Bandi Singhs are those Sikh prisoners, who parties like Shiromani Akali Dal and other Sikh bodies claim, were in jails even after completion of their sentences.
Harjinder Singh Dhami, who is president of the apex religious body of the Sikhs the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee , honoured the family members of Sikh leaders, who were killed along with Bhindranwale in the Golden Temple complex during the Army action in June 1984.
As per tradition, it was the Jathedar Akal Takht who every year honours the families of those who were killed in the army action, but this year it was done by the SGPC president.
Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma had earlier opposed the recent appointment of Gargaj as officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht in violation of 'maryada' and 'panthic traditions'.

Flood-hit Fazilka, Ferozepur still battling ‘yearly nightmare', farmers seek permanent solution

The flood situation in Punjab's border districts of Fazilka and Ferozepur continues to remain grim with vast stretches of farmland submerged for over a week now. While the government maintains that the situation is 'under control,' villagers are anxious as their standing crops have already been destroyed. In this backdrop, Fazilka MLA Narinder Pal Singh Sawna has stepped up efforts to seek relief for farmers, including early compensation and long-term flood control measures. On Wednesday, MLA Sawna visited villages Muhar Kheewa and Muhar Jamsher in Fazilka, accompanied by officials. These villages are worst hit as crops are submerged in water. Muhar Jamsher is surrounded by Sutlej from three sides and Pakistan from the fourth side. The MLA later met Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal in Chandigarh to press for a permanent solution to the Sutlej creek flooding in Fazilka. The MLA pointed out that while one side of the Sutlej creek has an embankment, the other side remains unprotected, causing water to overflow into farmlands and villages year after year. 'This has become a yearly nightmare for farmers. A permanent solution is the need of the hour,' Sawna told the minister, adding that the Bhagwant Mann-led government is known for resolving long-pending issues and must address this one firmly. Goyal assured him that the department would prepare a concrete plan to provide lasting relief to farmers of Fazilka. Sawna also met Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian, demanding early compensation for crop and house damage in border areas. He particularly highlighted the plight of cultivators farming on tenancy or informal arrangements, who often remain outside the compensation ambit. 'Most farmers here are small and own very little land. Even that gets destroyed in floods. They must be supported,' he said. Mundian assured that the government would act in the interest of farmers. This is the first time that an AAP legislator has formally raised the issue of early compensation with the revenue minister, even as Opposition parties like Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Congress, and BJP have been consistently targeting the government on this front. In neighbouring Ferozepur district, Deputy Commissioner Deepsikha Sharma visited embankments at Dheera Gharan and Aalewala villages to review strengthening measures, accompanied by SDM Gurmeet Singh. She said the river level had risen slightly but was continuously receding. Officials, with the help of villagers, reinforced embankments at Tendi Wala village using soil bags on Wednesday morning. 'Both villages are surrounded by water from all sides.. water on roads has receded, but still existing, hence commuting via roads is risky in these villages,' Iqbal Singh Mallah, Nambardar of Muthianwala, Jamabega and Balamega villages, said. Villagers of Dheerakara and Aalewala requested a special camp for veterinary medicines, following which instructions were issued to the animal husbandry department, the Deputy Commissioner said. She added that the district administration was maintaining close contact with residents of all riverine villages from Harike Headworks to Guru Harsahai. Medical camps were also being organised in Kutboodeen Wala, Nihala Lavera, Navi Gatti Rajoke and other villages to provide basic health services. 'There is no need to panic,' Sharma assured. Despite official assurances, farmers are increasingly frustrated over the delay in compensation. 'There is no hope that crops will be saved … So what are they waiting for? Can't they award us compensation as CM Bhagwant Mann had promised that compensation will be awarded even before girdwari?' Avtar Singh, former sarpanch of Kamalwala 324 village (Muthianwala) in Ferozepur district, asked. The release of water from dams in Himachal Pradesh has further raised concerns downstream in Punjab. Floodgates of Bhakra were opened on Tuesday, releasing water in a phased manner, while Pong dam discharged an additional 6,000 cusecs into the Beas river on Wednesday morning, taking its total outflow to 72,000 cusecs. Officials said heavy rainfall predicted in Himachal between August 23 and 25 necessitated the move. This is the first time in two years that the floodgates have been opened. Punjab had last witnessed devastating floods in 2023. With fresh inundations this year, farmers in Ferozepur and Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Pathankot etc are once again staring at heavy losses, demanding not just timely compensation but also a permanent solution to the Sutlej's fury. The water level at Bhakra dam rose by one foot on Wednesday, reaching approximately 1,666 feet at 11 am compared to 1,665 feet at the same time on Tuesday. The Pong dam level, however, remained steady at approximately 1,383 feet. At 11 am, the inflow at Bhakra was recorded at 59,000 cusecs against an outflow of 40,000 cusecs, while Pong dam registered an inflow of 37,000 cusecs and an outflow of 60,000 cusecs.

Sukhbir vows to uphold panthic ideals, flays rebel SAD, AAP govt

Sangrur: Shiromani Akali Dal ( SAD ) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday said panthic ideals and principles were paramount for him and he would never compromise on the prestige of the panth for power. He also said Punjab had always been "most important" for him. Addressing a gathering at the party conference to mark the 40th death anniversary of Harchand Singh Longowal at the latter's native village in Longowal, Sukhbir said he had made his stand clear to leaders like Prem Singh Chandumjra, Parminder Singh Dhindsa and Surjit Singh Rakhra. "These leaders wanted to force me into compromises so that they could become MPs and ministers, but I told them that resolving the issues of the quom (community) and Punjab were most important for me and unless these matters were addressed I would never agree to their requests," said Sukhbir. The SAD president said he would lead the fight to secure the rights of Punjab from the front and would never bow down to the Centre. The Akali leader asserted that he needed the people who had come to the conference and not the leaders who left the party for their selfish interests. Targeting the rebel faction of the SAD, Sukhbir said: "A nawan chulha dal has been established in the state which is getting cooking gas free of cost from the Centre to divide the Punjabis". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Pointing to jailed MP Amritpal Singh, Sukhbir, without taking his name, said similarly a self-proclaimed leader who had come from Dubai and donned the 'bana' of a Sikh and whose own family members were drug addicts deceived Punjabis into voting for him in the last parliamentary elections. Sukhbir also led a blistering attack on Bhagwant Mann, saying that he had not only failed as a CM but also as a leader from Sangrur district. He said the CM had not found the time to even visit this district and address the grievances of its people. "Tell me if Bhagwant Mann has established even one road, school or irrigation canal in this district," he asked, adding even promises like establishing a medical college at Mastuana Sahib remained a "pipe dream". He also highlighted how Mann had become a "mere figurehead" with Arvind Kejriwal assuming all powers in Punjab and even taking up residence in "new Sheesh Mahal" at Mohali. Similarly, Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain, who have also shifted to Chandigarh, have taken control of all the ministries, claimed Sukhbir. He also slammed the AAP govt for going back on all the promises made to the people. Sukhbir reminded the AAP govt that the SAD had always kept its promises and made the state power surplus, instituted old age pension and 'Shagun' scheme, besides creating expressways crisscrossing the entire Punjab. Assuring people that the SAD would address their concerns and safeguard their future, Sukhbir said: "Once our party forms a govt in the state it will change the requisite laws and ensure govt jobs are given to the Punjabis only." "The AAP govt twisted laws to hand over 50% of all new govt jobs in the state to the outsiders from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan. Outsiders will be banned from purchasing land in the state and all new industries will have to employ 80% Punjabi employees," he added. Senior party leader Daljit Singh Cheema spoke on how repeated central govts had gone back on commitments made to Sant Longowal under the Rajiv-Longowal accord, including denying Punjab its capital of Chandigarh. He also condemned a proposed legislation under which any chief minister or minister facing charges with a minimum five-year jail term would lose their chair if they were arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days. He said the legislation hit at the foundations of democracy as now central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate would make or break the CMs and ministers. Kneecap rapper in court on terrorism charge over Hezbollah flag

Hundreds of supporters of Irish rap band Kneecap protested outside a London court on Wednesday (August 20, 2025), as one of the band members appeared charged with a terrorism offence for allegedly supporting Hezbollah. Liam O'Hanna, 27, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was charged in May accused of displaying a Hezbollah flag during a London concert in November. Also Read | Kneecap ignites Glastonbury with anti-Starmer, pro-Palestine set amid censorship and political backlash He arrived at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London with other band members to cheers from a sea of supporters brandishing banners and chanting "Free Palestine" and "Free Mo Chara". Wednesday's hearing dealt with legal arguments, with the defence team seeking to have the charges thrown out on a legal technicality. The court adjourned the case until September 26 for a decision. Since the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah was banned in the UK in 2019, it has been an offence to show any support for it. In recent months, Kneecap has grabbed headlines for provocative statements denouncing the war in Gaza and against Israel. The hearing comes amid a growing UK controversy over government moves to prosecute those deemed to show support for banned organisations. More than 700 people have been arrested, mostly at demonstrations, since the Palestine Action group was outlawed in early July under the Terrorism Act 2000. The government ban on Palestine Action came into force days after it took responsibility for a break-in at an air force base in southern England that caused an estimated £7.0 million ($9.3 million) of damage to two aircraft. The group said its activists were responding to Britain's indirect military support for Israel during the war in Gaza. Supporting a proscribed group is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Provocative There has been huge support for Kneecap and O'Hanna, Liam Og O hAnnaidh in Irish, from the band's fans since his first court appearance in June. Mary Hobbs, 31, from Belfast told AFP on Wednesday: "I'm glad I could make it. I took a day off just to be here." "The charges are ludicrous, ludicrous. The justice system is just broken when you have things like this happening." Prosecutor Michael Bisgrove told the previous hearing the case was "not about Mr O'Hanna's support for the people of Palestine or his criticism of Israel". "He is well within his rights to voice his opinions and his solidarity," Bisgrove said. Instead, the prosecutor said, the case was about O'Hanna wearing and displaying "the flag of Hezbollah, a proscribed terrorist organisation, while allegedly saying 'Up Hamas, up Hezbollah'". After Wednesday's hearing, Mr. O'Hanna thanked the crowds outside the court for their support, and urged everyone "to continue to speak about Palestine" and what is happening in the conflict with Israel. The raucous punk-rap group has denied the accusations and said the video that led to the charge was taken out of context. Daring provocateurs to their fans, dangerous extremists to their detractors, the group's members rap in the Irish language as well as English. Formed in 2017, the group is no stranger to controversy. Their lyrics are filled with references to drugs, they have repeatedly clashed with the UK's previous Conservative government and have vocally opposed British rule in Northern Ireland. Last year, the group was catapulted to international fame by a semi-fictional film based on them that scooped multiple awards including at the Sundance festival.
