Pep Guardiola drops major hint about Rayan Cherki after tough debut

Daily Mirror19-06-2025
Rayan Cherki made his Manchester City full debut against Wydad AC as the Premier League side earned three points in the Club World Cup thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku
Pep Guardiola has hinted that the decision to bring Rayan Cherki to Manchester City was one made by the club, rather than him. The France international joined the Premier League side in a £34million deal ahead of the deadline to play in the Club World Cup.
But Guardiola has claimed he was happy to see Cherki's arrival from Lyon after the 21-year-old made his debut for City on Wednesday. The attacking star started the game as they got their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start against Wydad.

Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku both got on the scoresheet to secure three points for Guardiola's side in Group G. Though, the ex-Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss was left annoyed that Rico Lewis earned a late red card.

Cherki failed to impose himself on the game during his hour on the pitch however. The Frenchman lost the ball 10 times - more than any of his team-mates.
Guardiola nevertheless praised the attributes that Cherki can offer his side in the wake of Kevin De Bruyne's exit. Despite the City coach accepting that fully replacing the talismanic Belgian will be extremely difficult.
"Of course Kevin is difficult to replace we know that," he said. "For the quality he has, there is no doubt about it, but at same time the club decided on Rayan because he has incredible skills close to the box and great vision, pass in many things.
"It was just a first game with tough, tough conditions. I'm really pleased he came here."
In an interview with DAZN, Guardiola added: "Tijjani [Reijnders] played very well, Rayan [Cherki] had good moments. Everyone has to get to know us and see what happens."

While Cherki struggled to find his feet, Foden hit the ground running with a goal and an assist. The England international is hoping to bounce back from a tough 2024/25.
Foden said: 'It was a difficult season, I'm not going to lie. It was not the best. I got a little bit of time off, rested. Yeah, new start, new me.
'The hunger inside me is back and I want to prove people wrong. We want to try and put last year behind us and get back to how we used to. So, the determination is definitely there.'

Alexander Isak drops transfer bombshell with Liverpool keen on Newcastle star

Alexander Isak has informed Newcastle United that he wishes to leave the club in the current summer transfer window, according to reports. Rumours have spread like wildfire after Isak was not named in Newcastle's squad for their pre-season tour of Asia. The Daily Mail report that Isak has now told the club he wants to explore a move away – with the Newcastle hierarchy well aware of the situation. The Sweden international striker, strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, has stayed behind in Newcastle as his teammates travel to Singapore. Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last term, missed the recent 4-0 friendly defeat to Celtic due to being affected by transfer speculation. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. The 25-year-old also trained alone on Tuesday – but why has he missed the pre-season tour? And is he really joining Liverpool? Scroll on to find out… According to Newcastle, Isak is missing the 10-day tour of Singapore and South Korea because of a 'minor thigh issue'. The club believe that a long-haul flight would not help Isak in his recovery from injury, nor would playing three games in the space of 12 days, with Newcastle set to take on Arsenal, Tottenham and the K-League All-Stars. Newcastle have told Liverpool that Isak is not for sale – but it's believed that an offer of around £150m 'could see a move accelerate in the coming weeks' – and Arne Slot's side are still interested in a deal for the Swede. It's reported that the Magpies are already looking at potential replacements. Liverpool are still keen on Isak despite signing a different striker, Hugo Ekitike, from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m on Wednesday, according to The Times. It's thought that the Reds may have to offload a player before making a bid for Isak, such as Luis Diaz. Odds have been slashed on Isak moving to Liverpool this summer before September 2, 2025. Liverpool – 8/13 – 8/13 Any Saudi Pro League Club – 9/4 – 9/4 Arsenal – 13/2 – 13/2 Barcelona – 9/1 – 9/1 Real Madrid – 22/1 Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: 'Following news that Alexander Isak is open to a move away from Newcastle, odds on the centre-forward to join long-term admirers Liverpool have been slashed to 8/13 from 11/8. 'Elsewhere, Isak is 9/4 to join any Saudi Pro League Club, with Arsenal 13/2 among the outsiders to tempt the 25-year-old away from St James' Park.' Isak's agent Gonzalo Gaitan, meanwhile, has told Saudi Arabian newspaper Arriyadiyah that the player is assessing his options. 'We are indeed studying and analysing all options, and we may be close to finalising the next step for the player,' Gaitan said. 'Without revealing any details regarding whether Isak will transfer or stay with Newcastle.' It should be noted that Isak is also a target for a clubs in the lucrative Saudi Pro League – but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says there have been no concrete talks with the likes of Al Hilal so far. Isak and his camp previously made his demands clear over conditions for signing a new contract at Newcastle, according to talkSPORT. The Magpies are, of course, keen to keep hold of their superstar, with his current deal at St James' Park expiring in the summer of 2028. Isak was reportedly seeking £300,000-a-week to sign a new contract at Newcastle – which would've more than doubled his current earnings of £120,000-a-week – and would've broken the club's wage structure. But according to new reports, Isak and his camp do not want to commit to a new deal at Newcastle amid talk of a British record offer from Liverpool. After Isak was left out of Newcastle's 4-0 pre-season defeat to Celtic on Saturday, manager Eddie Howe said: 'I chose to send him home. 'The last thing Alex wants if he is not playing is to be sat in the stand and under that scrutiny, then if he wasn't going to play today, we mutually agreed he shouldn't be here. 'It was my decision. He travelled back to Glasgow with us, but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him. Both [Joelinton and Isak] are fit but not ready to play. Alex has trained and is fine but we didn't want to take the risk with him. 'Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal. I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him. More Trending 'We have a few of those players who are irreplaceable. Your top players are so hard to find, so hard to recruit and so hard to develop. So when you have them, you need to treasure them. Of course we're desperate to keep him as part of our team. 'I think it's difficult for me to ever give 100 per cent clarity on any player, I'd never do that. 'All I can say is Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players, the staff, the team. 'I've never had any issue with him and I'm confident he's going to be here at the start of the season.' Liverpool learn Alexander Isak's huge wage demands as Newcastle star rejects big offer

As Liverpool target Alexander Isak asks to explore a move away from Newcastle United, here's where his wage demands would place him in the Premier League's top earners list Alexander Isak's wage demands would catapult him into the ranks of the Premier League's most handsomely rewarded stars if he did ultimately sign a new deal with Newcastle United. The striker continues to be linked with Liverpool despite the champions' £79million signing of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. ‌ Isak has now reportedly told the Magpies he wants to explore a move away from the club. And amid speculation over his future, Eddie Howe chose to send the Swede home from the pre-season game at Celtic last weekend. ‌ It has also been confirmed he will miss the club's pre-season trip to Asia with a minor thigh issue. Social media clips have emerged this week of Isak training on his own, and it could be a case of 'when' not 'if' he leaves Tyneside. ‌ Isak's representative, Gonzalo Gaitan, revealed recently that he is "studying and analysing all options." He told Saudi publication Arriyadiyah: "We may be close to finalising the next step for the player. Without revealing any details regarding whether Isak will transfer or stay with Newcastle." Discussions regarding a fresh Newcastle contract for Isak have been ongoing. His existing deal, which doesn't run out until 2028, is understood to be valued at £120,000 per week. Nevertheless, according to talkSPORT, Isak's camp has been pursuing a package that would secure their client £300,000 per week. Such terms fall outside Newcastle's present pay structure, and The Times have reported the club were prepared to go up to £200,000-a-week, but that was not agreeable to the player. ‌ Isak's huge demands would ultimately elevate him among the Premier League's top earners. According to Spotrac, just five top-flight players earn beyond that amount. Heading the way is Manchester City's Erling Haaland on £525,000. Next comes Mohamed Salah (£400,000), his Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk (£350,000), Manchester United's Casemiro (£350,000) and Raheem Sterling (£325,000) of Chelsea. Meanwhile, Ekitike is reported to be on around £250,000-a-week at Anfield. ‌ Howe addressed rumours about Isak as he explained his decision to send him home before the Celtic game. He said: "It was my decision. He travelled back to Glasgow with us, but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him." The Magpies boss added: "Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal. I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him. ‌ "We have a few of those players who are irreplaceable. Your top players are so hard to find, so hard to recruit and so hard to develop. "So when you have them, you need to treasure them. Of course, we're desperate to keep him as part of our team. I think it's difficult for me to ever give 100 per cent clarity on any player, I'd never do that. "All I can say is Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players, the staff, the team. I've never had any issue with him and I'm confident he's going to be here at the start of the season." However, since those words, the landscape appears to have shifted, with Isak looking increasingly likely to be moving on, with Liverpool at the front of the queue for his services.
