
Sunken coastline and higher flooding risks: Scientists chart a worst-quake scenario
The Cascadia subduction zone might not be on the minds of most Californians, but it was for more than a dozen geologists and other scientists in a recent study analyzing flood risks along the Pacific coast.
Sea-level rise is the typical focus of such studies, but the authors focused on another hazard that experts say is a matter of when, not if: a megaquake.
According to the study, when the next magnitude 8-plus temblor occurs along the Cascadia subduction zone, which stretches from Northern California up to Canada's Vancouver Island, it could cause sudden subsidence (aka land sinking) of 1.6 to 6.6 feet, dramatically heightening flood risk.
'Earthquake deformation modeling and geospatial analysis show that [land sinking] from a great earthquake at Cascadia today could double the flood exposure of residents, structures, and roads,' the authors wrote.
The study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, concluded that the worst-case quake scenario would expand the area at risk of flooding by 116 square miles. That's 2½ times the size of San Francisco, The Times' expert earthquake reporter Rong-Gong Lin II noted in his coverage this week.
'Traditionally, scientists and government officials have focused on climate-change-driven sea-level rise to calculate the projected increased risk of coastal flooding,' Ron explained, 'But the study argues that neglecting the role of major earthquakes would be shortsighted.'
Some parts of the Pacific coastline are already sinking, 'amplifying local relative sea-level rise (RSLR),' the authors noted. That includes California's Humboldt Bay area, which is sinking at the highest rate along the whole Pacific coastline, according to the study.
The Humboldt Bay region, which includes the area around Eureka and Arcata, was identified in the study as especially prone to major land sinking in the event of a megaquake. Several other communities along the Oregon and Washington's coastline were also highlighted.
This from the study caught my eye: Some areas along the Pacific coastline are actually rising slowly due to how the tectonic plates are moving. For now, that's a bit of a buffer against sea-level rise, but it won't last much longer, the authors wrote.
'By [about] 2030, rates of climate-driven sea-level rise are expected to outpace gradual uplift,' the study states, adding that over the 70 years after that, sea levels are projected to rise roughly 1 to 3 feet.

Michigan's only rattlesnake is inbreeding
While sexual reversal, genetic gambling, or evolving to reproduce later into life make the animal kingdom incredibly resilient, it's difficult to outrun inbreeding. Or out-slither it, in the case of the only rattlesnake species found in the state of Michigan. A 15-year study found that farms, buildings, and roads are making it difficult for the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus) to find a mate. The most inbred snakes had some serious problems not only producing viable offspring, but in simply surviving year-to-year.. The findings are detailed in a study published August 18 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). 'These are fairly large and stable populations of Eastern Massasaugas,' study co-author and Michigan State University conservation biologist Sarah Fitzpatrick said in a statement. 'The fact that we're detecting problems from inbreeding in these populations is concerning, given that many other populations throughout the Midwest are much smaller and even more fragmented.' Checking fitness As venomous snakes, Eastern Massasauga rattlesnakes aren't necessarily the most popular animal. Yet the reptiles are a keystone species of wetland food webs throughout the Midwest. The snakes hunt mice and rats that could run rampant in nearby homes and barns if not kept in check. According to study co-author Meaghan Clark, if the rattlesnakes disappeared, the entire balance of the ecosystem would be disrupted. These rattlesnakes are considered timid, and don't stray too far from the wetlands where they were born. They will typically only wander to explore a nearby habitat and find a mate before they head home. However, increasing human development is likely keeping Eastern Massasaugas even more homebound. When it's eventually time for the snakes to choose a mate, they are more likely to end up with a snake that is related to them instead of one from a distant population. [ Related: The last woolly mammoths were impressively inbred—but that's not what killed them. ] 'They're very vulnerable to even minor disturbances to their habitat,' said Fitzpatrick. 'Even a single road can isolate populations.' When animals reproduce with their relatives, it typically harms their babies' fitness. In biology, 'fitness' describes how successful an animal is at surviving, producing babies, and continuing on the species. Inbreeding can decrease fitness in what conservationists call inbreeding depression. However, it can be quite difficult to prove in wild populations, especially snakes with a venomous bite. Rattlesnake family trees In the study, Fitzpatrick's lab joined forces with long-term snake monitoring projects, partnering with researchers at Grand Valley State University, West Virginia University, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Every summer since 2009, scientists armed with snake tongs have trekked through wetlands to capture the elusive reptile. The team noted each snake's length, weight, and pregnancy status. They also drew blood so that they could extract DNA and sequence their genomes. That genetic information helped them track how many babies were born and survive into adulthood, but also allowed the team to reconstruct pedigrees and determine how closely any two individual snakes were related. The team ultimately traced the family histories of over 1,000 Eastern Massasauga rattlesnakes. Before being released into the wild, each snake was marked with a PIT tag, similar to a microchip that a pet might have. This tracking means that the team can track the snakes' survival, based on whether they were recaptured. They found that the most inbred snakes were 13 percent less likely to have surviving offspring and their annual survival rate was nearly 12 percent lower than the less inbred rattlesnakes. Numbers this high even surprised the researchers. 'This long-term field monitoring is the backbone of the study,' Clark said. 'Having people out each season catching these snakes made all of this possible.' The team hopes that this data informs conservation efforts that could help Eastern Massasaugas find mates outside their families. Some small changes, including road underpasses or habitat restoration in wetlands, could promote more connectivity between snakes that would boost the gene pool. Conservationists could also experiment with moving the reptiles to new habitats with more options for finding suitable rattlesnake mates. Solve the daily Crossword

Californians Say AI Is Moving 'Too Fast'
Hello and welcome to the Tuesday edition of In the Loop. I'm writing to you while looking out over the sunny city of San Francisco, where I'm spending the week on a reporting trip. If you're working on something cool here and want to say hi, feel free to shoot me an email at What to Know: Californians are fearful of AI Californians are more concerned than excited about the future of AI, by a margin of 55% to 33%, according to new polling shared exclusively with TIME ahead of its publication this Tuesday. Of the 1,400 adults polled, 48% said the technology was progressing 'too fast,' compared to 32% who said the pace was 'about right' and just 4% who said it was 'too slow.' And 59% of respondents said they believed AI would benefit the wealthiest corporations and households most, compared to 20% who said it would most benefit working people and the middle class. The poll was funded by TechEquity, a progressive non-profit. Support for regulation — The new data shows that 70% of Californians believe in the need for 'strong laws to make AI fair.' But the data also reveals high levels of skepticism that those laws will ever be enacted. 59% of those surveyed say they don't trust the California state government to control AI. Even more — 64% — said they do not trust the federal government. A picture emerges — The poll adds to a growing collection of data from around the world suggesting that ordinary people are worried about the impact of AI on their lives. In January, I wrote about a U.K. poll that showed 60% of Brits favoring a ban on the development of 'smarter-than-human' AI models. And in April, the Pew Research Center found that 43% of U.S. adults believed AI was more likely to harm than benefit them, compared to 24% who expected the benefits to outweigh the harms. Ground zero — California is emerging as a key battleground for efforts to legislate on AI, as the state where most top American AI companies are based. Last year a bill that aimed to regulate so-called 'frontier' models cleared the state legislature, only to be vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom. That hasn't stopped other efforts to regulate AI in the state, however. California 'is a place where you can still legislate and govern with a semi-functioning legislative process, which is not something you can say about D.C., particularly on this topic,' says Catherine Bracy, the CEO of TechEquity. 'The federal government has made it clear that they are going to be completely hands-off, if not creating rules that unleash the industry even more,' Bracy says. '[So] it is incumbent on the states to pick up the slack and make sure that real people who are going to be impacted by these tools are protected.' Who to Know: Dean Ball, former White House advisor on AI For a stint in office, it was an unusually impactful one. Dean Ball joined the Trump Administration in April—headhunted based on an essay he had written titled 'Here is what I think we should do' about AI policy. What followed was a whirlwind five months in government, in which he played a key role contributing to the AI Action Plan, Trump's AI policy, which was announced in July. Earlier this month, Ball announced he was leaving the government to focus on his own research. Action planning — Trump's Action Plan won praise for its emphasis on bolstering U.S. energy grid capacity, plus onshoring datacenters and the production of the chips that power them. The document also urged U.S. companies to focus more on developing open-weight AI models, to prevent the world from coming to rely on Chinese models (which are currently the best in class). The document framed these recommendations, and more, in terms of the escalating AI race with China. Exit interview — In an interview with TIME, Ball emphasized the importance of AI to the Trump administration. 'AI is the President's number one technology policy priority, by a significant margin,' he said. At the same time, Ball says, there is a lot of skepticism inside the Administration toward AI industry projections that superintelligent machines are some two to five years away. 'The diffusion of AI is going to take a really long time,' Ball says. 'I've lived through technology revolutions before, where I was young and bright-eyed and thought it was all going to happen in two or three years. And it turns out a lot of it did happen, but it took 15.' AI in Action: Should you delete your old emails to save water? An official U.K. government document, published last week, has caught a lot of heat online for suggesting that users should 'delete old emails and pictures' to save water during a drought, because data centers 'require vast amounts of water to cool their systems.' It is true that many data centers use water for cooling, but let's get a sense of perspective here. Andy Masley, a blogger who has written several illuminating pieces about the energy and water expenditure of AI systems, ran the numbers. Fixing a leaking toilet, he wrote, can save 200-400 liters of water per day. 'To save as much water in data centers as fixing your toilet would save, you would need to delete 1.5 billion photos, or 200 billion emails. If it took you 0.1 seconds to delete each email, and you deleted them nonstop for 16 hours a day, it would take you 723 years to delete enough emails to save the same amount of water in data centers as you could if you fixed your toilet. Ancient Egyptian desert inscriptions may reveal oldest known reference to Moses, researcher says
A researcher may have uncovered the oldest written references to Moses, dating back 3,800 years and hidden in an Egyptian desert. The two etchings were found at Serabit el-Khadim, an ancient turquoise mining site in the Sinai Desert where Semitic laborers once worked during the Middle Bronze Age. Advertisement The Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions date back between 1800 and 1600 B.C. They were etched centuries before the earliest parts of the Bible were written, between the 10th and 7th centuries B.C. The two inscriptions, among many at the site, were first discovered in the early 1900s – but they're now being reanalyzed by an American-Israeli epigraphist named Michael S. Bar-Ron. The expert, who's also a graduate student at Ariel University, spoke with Fox News Digital about the discovery. Bar-Ron posits that the inscriptions read 'Zot M'Moshe' and 'Ne'um Moshe.' Advertisement The phrases may mean 'This is from Moses' and 'Declaration of Moses,' respectively. If verified, the inscriptions are the earliest written mention of Moses outside the Bible. 'I spent eight years actively involved in the painstaking, oft-frustrating reconstruction of some 23 wordy Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions,' the epigraphist noted. 'That is, based on the principles of the foremost greats in the field, and informed by the work of my distinguished colleagues in the field.' He also believes the 'Moses' inscriptions may have a common author, pointing to certain 'stylistic points' such as word usage. Bar-Ron's larger graduate thesis explores 'a Mosaic-type leadership' in the region at the time. He described the latest revelations about the inscriptions as 'nonessential icing on the cake.' Bar-Ron also noted that his findings will be peer-reviewed in the future; his research has already been edited over 100 times. 'If we were drawing such conclusions on the basis of one or two inscriptions, it would be weak,' he observed. 'Rather, they are based on what is understood across the full set found at Serabit el-Khadim.' More recently, a French expert identified ancient 'propaganda' praising Ramesses II, the Egyptian leader who may have challenged Moses.
