49ers hold virtual meeting with projected Day 3 WR prospect Kyle Shanahan may love
There's nothing that immediately jumps off the page with University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Konata Mumpfield.
He measured in at the combine at 5-11, 186 pounds. He doesn't have particularly long arms and his athletic testing was unremarkable. However, watching him play football makes it clear why the San Francisco 49ers wanted to hold a pre-draft meeting with him. They did so virtually according to the Draft Network's Justin Melo.
Mumpfield doesn't bring any of the measurables we typically associate with strong WR prospects, but that makes what he does on tape more impressive. He is open a lot thanks to some nasty route running that highlights his game. When he is forced to make contested catches he does so more effectively than his frame suggests he might, and his body control shines on throws down the field. Mumpfield also has a really good feel to find soft spots in zones when lining up both outside and in the slot.
After one year at the University of Akron where he hung up 751 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman, Mumpfield transferred to Pitt where he put together a consistently strong three seasons. With the Panthers he caught 154 passes for 1,940 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has experience lining up at various spots in Pitt's offense. According to Pro Football Focus, he played in 744 snaps in the slot and 899 out wide.
Between his route running prowess and toughness, it's easy to see where the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan might love to take a late-round flier on a receiver with a ton of experience pro-ready tools.

Washington Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore may be entering a make-or-break season.
Washington Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore may be entering a make-or-break season. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders made a trade with the New Orleans Saints back in November of 2024 to acquire veteran cornerback Marshon Lattimore. While he was only able to play in two games for his new team, he will play a key role for them in 2025. Advertisement And this season could be a very important one for the 29-year-old defensive back. In a recent article by Nick Shook, he picks some players who he believes are entering "make-or-break" seasons, and one of the players he lists is the Commanders veteran. "This is about earning the final year of his contract," Shook wrote. "Lattimore moved to Washington as a coveted trade acquisition but struggled to find the same form with the Commanders, posting some truly dreadful Pro Football Focus grades in the postseason. There's reason to believe a full year with Dan Quinn will fix things, and Lattimore is under pressure to do so this fall because the Commanders can cut ties with zero financial penalty in 2026." Lattimore will be a free agent after the 2026 season, so if he plays well in 2025, then he could lined up for quite the pay day when the time comes. Advertisement The veteran cornerback played 10 games in 2023, but he still racked up eight passes defended and 48 total tackles. The Commanders are hoping to compete with the likes of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East this season, so Lattimore will be looking to help the team's defense do just that. Cleveland Browns Cornerback Denzel Ward Ranked Top 10 in NFL
Cleveland Browns Cornerback Denzel Ward Ranked Top 10 in NFL originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are hoping for a much-improved 2025 over an abysmal 3-14 campaign from a season ago. Advertisement They've added some pieces on offense and defense this offseason through free agency and the NFL Draft, and hope they can find the piece at quarterback that fits best. But that's not to say there's not already talent on the roster, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Star defensive end Myles Garrett was just made the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL ... ever. And he'll be playing with one of the best cornerbacks in the league once again next season. Pro Football Focus just ranked the top 32 cornerbacks in the NFL, and the Browns' Denzel Ward showed in the top 10 at No. 10. 10. Denzel Ward, Cleveland Browns "Ward is another player who has struggled to stay healthy but, when at full strength, is one of the best in the NFL. Advertisement "In 2024, Ward was on a torrid forced-incompletion-rate pace until he faded at the end of the season. He still led the NFL with 17 forced incompletions, and his 80.4 PFF coverage grade in man and zone-match coverage was tops in the NFL." Ward was originally drafted by the Browns in the first round at No. 4 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. Across his seven seasons in the league, Ward has made four Pro Bowls and posted 322 total tackles with 264 solo and 11 for loss. He's added six QB hits and half a sack, with 17 interceptions, including two for touchdowns, four forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries with two for touchdowns. Jets Urged To 'Tap Into' One Key Justin Fields Trait
Jets Urged To 'Tap Into' One Key Justin Fields Trait originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets' offense under new offensive coordinator Engstrand will look vastly altered from last season. Advertisement New voices, a new scheme, and most importantly, a new quarterback make for a different-looking unit. Justin Fields has been handed the starting role and comes to the Big Apple looking to ignite and save his NFL career after four seasons of so-so production. One weapon Fields possesses is his ability as a runner, with rushing totals of 1,143 yards in 2022 and 657 in 2023. Last season, before he was benched for Russell Wilson, he had five rushing touchdowns and 289 yards in his six starts. For Pro Football Focus, Engstrand utilizing Fields' running ability has to be done regularly. "New York finally moved on from the failed Aaron Rodgers experiment and replaced him with Justin Fields on a two-year, $40 million contract," Pro Football Focus writes. Advertisement "Fields has never been a top-20 quarterback in PFF overall grade in any of his four seasons, but he's still only 26 years old and will be reuniting with Garrett Wilson, whom he threw passes to at Ohio State. With an underwhelming receiving corps outside of Wilson, the Jets would be wise to tap into Fields' rushing ability as much as possible." Quarterback Justin Fields warms up© Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images With a solid group of backs behind him in Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, Fields won't have to shoulder all the rushing duties, and Garrett Wilson, Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, and rookie Mason Taylor are options in the passing game. But for most, the Jets' offense should be a run-first unit, and Fields will/should play a big role in that. Advertisement We know how devastating he can be as a runner, and even NFL Network's Brian Baldinger stated how dangerous Fields looked running the football at OTAs. There are a lot of ways for Engstrand to go with how he should run his offense, and Fields, as a genuine runner, has to be one of them.
