Streaming surpasses broadcast and cable TV viewing in US for first time
LOS ANGELES, June 17 (Reuters) - Streaming services, which have been steadily gaining in popularity, have finally dethroned broadcast and cable television in the U.S., winning more viewers in May than broadcast and cable combined, audience measurement firm Nielsen reported on Tuesday.
Nielsen, in its monthly report The Gauge, said streaming captured 44.8% of total TV usage in the U.S. in May, highlighting the growing dominance of streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab over the past four years.
Google's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab YouTube alone accounted for 12.5% of all television viewing in May, representing the largest audience share for a streaming service. Free ad-supported streaming services, such as Paramount Global's (PARA.O), opens new tab PlutoTV, Roku Channel (ROKU.O), opens new tab and Fox's Tubi, also have gained popularity, collectively capturing 5.7% of TV viewership, Nielsen reported.
Broadcast accounted for 20% of TV viewership in May, while cable accounted for 24%, Nielsen said.
The rise of streaming, which received a big boost during the COVID pandemic when people were forced to seek entertainment at home, reflects the broader transformation in media consumption, as viewers increasingly favor on-demand content over traditional TV schedules. The trend is reshaping the television landscape, with implications for advertisers and content creators alike.

Teddi Mellencamp celebrates health achievement amid stage four cancer battle
Teddi Mellencamp celebrated new hair growth in an emotional post on social media Monday. The former reality star, 43, who has been enjoying a new romance amid her cancer battle, shared the new using some before and after photos or her shaved head. 'Today was the first day I noticed a real change in my hair regrowth,' the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum wrote. Mellencamp, who was diagnosed with stage four melanoma said, 'Cancer comes with so many emotions: anger, sadness, loneliness,' she wrote. 'I feel like I live in a fog, and I can't help but beat myself up on all of the ways I am falling short. I just desperately want to be back to my usual self,' she explained. 'So this little bit of hair growth, this change from May 12th (second slide) to today, June 16th, made me smile. It's amazing what my body can do.' The photos clearly show the amazing change that took place during the dates Mellencamp referred to. Her scars from the surgery to remove four tumors from her brain were clearly visible. Fans who were going through or had gone through something similar offered their support. 'I totally get what you are going through,' wrote one. 'I too am going through the fight of stage 4 melanoma and I have all the feelings you feel it's terrible ... you just want to be your old self... keep up the fight ...immunotherapy is amazing ... ❤️' 'My hair looks exactly the same after 6 months of grueling chemo, prayers for us both ❤️,' shared another fighter. 'Praying I know it all to well but… I just had my first haircut in over a year of growth ! Our bodies are amazing and you are doing amazing!' a fellow survivor shared. While Teddi continues moving through the health ordeal, she has also met someone special. recently exclusively caught sight of Teddi in a clinch with her a new beau, and she has since confirmed she has a man in her life. Mellencamp, who is separated from her husband Edwin Arroyave, defended her right to date on her Two T's in a Pod podcast with fellow 'Housewife' Tamra Judge in their June 11 episode. 'People have been coming for me about fostering a dog, and they've been coming for me for dating,' she said of the criticism she has received for these decisions. '[They say], "The only thing she should be worried about right now are her kids and staying alive."' 'If you want to date… life doesn't stop because you have cancer,' Judge asserted. 'Yeah. And if I want to put myself in a situation where I'm staying busy so I'm not getting depressed, why have a problem with that?' the personal trailer asked rhetorically. 'Clearly, I'm not going on dates while my kids are sitting here, looking up, waiting to hang out with me.' Mellencamp, who is a talented equestrian, has also kept up her practice of riding her horse when she feels up to it. 'The most 'normal' I feel is on a horse,' she wrote on social media.
