North Coast teacher makes global debut in local film
Lloyd Primary School teacher Sfiso Fakazi (51) has made an international breakthrough from the classroom to the silverscreen with the local film Treasure Hunt.
The film will be screened at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami Beach, Florida, from June 11-15.
Before his leap onto the international stage, Sfiso had been dedicated to teaching Creative Arts since 2007. His passion for the arts has opened doors to acting roles in some of South Africa's most popular TV shows, including Uzalo, Imbewu, Sibongile and Dlamini and Disaster Holiday (now streaming on Netflix).
In Treasure Hunt, he plays a supporting role as a jewellery shop owner who encounters a young thug attempting to sell a stolen necklace.
Treasure Hunt, written and directed by filmmaker Chim Onyebilanma, follows the gripping journey of a reformed ex-convict who discovers a stash of jewellery hidden in a rubbish bin – only to find himself pursued by dangerous criminals.
Shot in Embo, a small township nestled within the Valley of a Thousand Hills in KwaZulu-Natal, the film captures the tension and texture of township life while telling a story with universal appeal.
The film features some of South Africa's top talent, including Moopi Mothibeli, Muzi Mthabela, Trevor Gumbi, Zane Meas and Samukele Mkhize, with cinematography by renowned international filmmaker Isaac Alongi.
Beyond acting, Sfiso also serves as a co-ordinator for the KwaDukuza circuit's quiz, drama and indigenous competitions. He sees this opportunity as a beacon of hope for his pupils, to show them that thier dreams are within reach.
'I am beyond excited to rub shoulders with acting giants in the film industry and to be an example to the pupils I teach. You can do it all if you set your mind to it. Working hard and training hard is the way to go,' he said.
Sfiso spent about a month on set, managing the delicate balance between his responsibilities as a teacher and the demands of filming.

Unpacking sisterhood and social struggles in Tyler Perry's 'Straw'
Teyana Taylor stars as officer Kay Raymond in Tyler Perry's new movie, 'Straw'. Image: X Last week, I had the pleasure of virtually interviewing Teyana Taylor and Sherri Shepherd, who are part of the principal cast of Tyler Perry's thriller, 'Straw'. Now these phenomenal women are legends in the industry - and not just for acting. Taylor is a respected singer, songwriter, model, dancer, choreographer and music video director, while Shepherd is also a daytime talk show host as well as podcaster and comedian. Engaging with them, even briefly, was mind-blowing. Especially with it being about a project that undeniably carries Perry's signature ability to portray poignant stories of socioeconomic hardship. He's proven his Midas touch in his popular "Madea" franchise and 'Good Deeds'. 'Straw' dropped on Netflix yesterday. It centres on Janiyah Wiltkinson (Taraji P. Henson), a single mother with a sick little girl, who is having the worst day. Her landlord is threatening to throw her out if she doesn't pay her overdue rent. Her manager at the local grocery store where she works as a cashier fired her for taking longer than she promised, as she had to rush to her daughter's school while on duty. Amid trying to get back to work, a cop hits her car and blames her for it while also threatening to kill her. As she pleads for her salary, so she can pay her rent and give her child $40 for school lunch, two thugs arrive to rob the store. What follows is a series of unfortunate events and misunderstandings that lead to her being wanted for murder. She doesn't help her situation when she holds a teller at gunpoint to cash her cheque - a situation which mushrooms into a tense standoff with law enforcement. Sherri Shepherd as Nicole in 'Straw'. Image: Chip Bergmann/Perry Well Films 2/Courtesy Netflix ©2025 On the actresses' thoughts on the strong social aspect of the script and their respective roles, Shepherd, who plays Nicole, the kind-hearted bank manager, said: 'You know, when I read the script, the part that I loved is that it had a social aspect to it, because I think that's what people are going to connect to. 'Taraji's character, Janiyah, couldn't catch a break. She played by the rules, and they weaponised those rules against her. And I think that people have had those days, or you know somebody who's been through that. 'And because of that, hopefully, the person (watching) will leave with a lot more empathy and compassion than when they started.' Taylor, who is cast as Detective Kay Raymond, agreed wholeheartedly with Shepherd's sentiments. Interestingly, this isn't the first time Taylor is working with Perry. 'Actually, my first movie ever was with Tyler Perry, so being able to work with him on his project was really like a family reunion, and we had a blast. 'You know, being able to be directed by him is always amazing, and he created such an amazing and safe space, putting me in a position to have the opportunity to get to work with Sherry and Taraji has been amazing. 'I'm just so happy to be a part of it,' she shared. Taraji P. Henson as Janiyah Wiltkinson in 'Straw'. Image: Chip Bergmann/Perry Well Films 2/Courtesy Netflix ©2025

Netflix hikes package prices: How much you will now pay
Netflix subscribers are facing higher monthly bills as the global streaming giant implements price increases from June. Image: Netflix South African Netflix subscribers are facing higher monthly bills as the global streaming giant implements price increases across three of its four subscription tiers. The changes, which began rolling out in May 2025, are now in full effect for most users. The new pricing structure sees increases to the Mobile, Standard, and Premium plans, while the Basic plan remains unchanged. This marks Netflix's second price hike in South Africa since its 2016 launch. When South Africans connect, we don't just network; we build a community. The Lekker Network is a professional network where every conversation starts with, 'How can I help you?' Come join us & be a part of a community of extraordinary Saffas. New Netflix South Africa pricing: Mobile : R59/month (up from R49) – +20% : R59/month (up from R49) – Standard : R179/month (up from R159) – +13% : R179/month (up from R159) – Premium : R229/month (up from R199) – +15% : R229/month (up from R199) – Basic: Remains at R99/month Subscribers were notified via email and in-app messages depending on their billing cycles, with the updated prices applying from their next payment date in June. While Netflix has not released an official media statement regarding the change, a note on its website reads: 'Plans and pricing may change as we continue to improve our service and add more TV shows and movies. Adjustments can also happen in response to local market changes, such as changes to local taxes or inflation.' The price hikes come at a time when South African consumers are increasingly sensitive to cost-of-living pressures, with many streaming platforms competing for attention in a saturated market. MultiChoice also upped prices Earlier this year, MultiChoice implemented its own price and product adjustments for DStv and Showmax, signaling a broader industry trend of rising subscription costs as content providers invest more in technology, content rights, and user experience. The unchanged Basic plan offers some relief to budget-conscious subscribers, while the Mobile plan -aimed at single-device viewers – is still Netflix's most affordable option, albeit now 20% more expensive than before. Dorpse July raises not only funds but spirits too
The Rotary Club of Krugersdorp and Friends of Emergency Services (FES) took hands to raise funds by racing fictitious donkeys at their annual Dorpse July. • Also read: Rotary Anns gather for annual conference One of the directors at FES, Angie van den Berg, said this was their second Dorpse July, which is a beloved Donkey Derby event and was once again a wonderful success. 'This year it was held in support of FES, where the event brought together around 120 attendees for an evening of fun, laughter, and giving back to the community,' she said. Angie added that the fundraiser aided vital emergency services needs in the area. Funds will be shared between Rotary and FES to directly support their ongoing community work. 'The atmosphere was relaxed and joyful, with attendees enjoying every moment of the derby. One of the highlights of the evening came when guests spontaneously stepped forward to make additional donations; a heartwarming gesture that reminded us all of the power of community and the importance of the cause,' she explained. The Krugersdorp News attended the evening, where stick horses were used as the racing donkeys. Participants could then bid on the donkey to cross the finish line. The winning bidder could then get on one of the multi-coloured donkeys they won, and two pairs of dice were thrown. One dice determined the colour of which donkey moved forward, and another dice determined how far he would move. There were prizes for the winners of the race, as well as for people who bet on the winning horse. The evening concluded with an auction, with all proceeds to benefit organisations. 'The Dorpse July is now a staple annual event, and we're already looking forward to an even bigger and better derby in 2026! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and contributed – your support makes all the difference,' Angie concluded.
