From Embo to Miami: SA film Treasure Hunt set to close American Black Film Festival

The feature film Treasure Hunt by Chim Onyebilanma has been selected as the closing film for the American Black Film Festival. It will be screened on 14 June at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The production features established actors, such as Moopi Mothibeli Muzi Mthabela and Trevor Gumbi alongside local talent, Melissa Mkhize. Onyebilanma's organisation has spent five years training young people through short films and masterclasses with professional actors before producing their first feature. A film made in a humble studio tucked away in Embo, KwaZulu-Natal, has secured a coveted screening slot at one of the world's most prestigious film festivals. Treasure Hunt, the debut feature film from CAP Studios, has been selected to close the 2025 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami Beach, Florida, next month, a platform that has launched numerous Oscar-winning films and filmmakers. 'I think they're honouring us by giving us the slot,' says writer-director Chim Onyebilanma during our interview. The film tells the story of a reformed ex-con (played by seasoned actor Moopi Mothibeli) who finds a stash of jewellery while scavenging through bins in wealthy neighbourhoods. He then gets caught in the crosshairs of criminals, determined to retrieve his find after he turns it in to the police. But beyond its crime thriller elements, the film delivers a powerful message about integrity. 'This guy in this story is a man of integrity, and because of his integrity, he decides to take the treasure he saw to the police,' says Onyebilanma. 'He's a man who has nothing but a big treasure of integrity inside of him, compared to others who have a lot, but they are empty inside. It's a twist on society. He says his passion for movies started from the first movie he watched and just like that, the power of cinematic storytelling lit a spark in him. 'The fact that you can come together and tell a story is what pushes me. The whole world is about storytelling. Human beings and humanity are moved by the stories, and the most powerful stories are visual stories. Filmmaking is where you can tell visual stories, and you can use this to move the heart, you can move the emotion, and you can actually bring change.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Treasure Hunt film (@treasurehuntmovie) The film was created by a non-profit organisation, Chibi Archives Production NPC, known as CAP studios, which is primarily focused on empowering local youth through arts education. 'We are actually an NGO which works in the area of the arts to empower youths here. And at the same time, we produce movies,' Onyebilanma says. 'This is our first full-length feature film. We have done short films which have won awards, but nothing of this size.' The production has attracted an impressive cast of established South African actors, including Moopi Mothibeli, who was in the lead role alongside Muzi Mthabela, Trevor Gumbi, Zane Meas, and Samukele Mkhize. 'A blessing to us' Securing Mothibeli as the lead came through an unexpected connection. After struggling to find the perfect actor, Onyebilanma's assistant remembered a talented performer from his university days. 'Moopi was a blessing to us,' the director says. 'He's the hero of this, not just the film itself. He's the hero of this production. That's why I'm trying to make sure I get to Miami with him. He gave 110%.' The film also showcases talent nurtured directly through the studio's programmes. 'The second-most prominent role was taken up by one of our people, Melissa Mkhize,' Onyebilanma says. 'You wouldn't know her because she's just one of our young people here. But like they said, even people like Moopi, and the others said this lady is at par with these people who are out there well-known.' According to him, the team is waiting to hear if KZN Film will sponsor Mkhize's trip to Miami - her first journey outside South Africa. The film was shot entirely in and around the township, with locals offering their homes, cars, and talents to make it happen. 'Our studio is right in the rural area. You would drive through all the bushes before you get to where we are,' Onyebilanma says. 'We weren't looking at international festivals, we're looking at South Africa... But because we aimed for the sky, we got to hit the sky.' The production has received an unexpected boost when Hollywood cinematographer Isaac Alongi volunteered his services after reading the script. 'This man volunteered. He is a Hollywood cinematographer from Kansas,' Onyebilanma recalls. 'When he saw the script, he said, 'If you can convince me, you have professional actors and good locations, I will come down.' And we convinced him that we had, and he came down, which really helped our youths.' 'We need more resources' For Onyebilanma, the film represents more than just a creative achievement. It's a statement about the possibilities for black filmmakers in South Africa despite significant challenges. 'Filmmaking for everybody, but especially for the blacks in South Africa, is very challenging. It's challenging on various levels,' he says. 'Filmmaking is an expensive hobby if you call it a hobby. It's an expensive thing.' 'We need more resources released for this segment. I would love for people reading this to consider going to our website and getting in touch about helping us with our coming production.' He says another challenge is distribution, admitting that not everyone can get their films at film festivals. According to him, distribution into theatres proved difficult because 'the theatres are not open to markets, especially films made among blacks, because they're asking who will watch them'. However, he believes the industry is changing as emerging filmmakers take bolder risks. 'What is changing is there are people who are getting bolder and saying, you know what, just like we are also doing, you could never do this project except by faith. Let's get out there. If we sink, we sink.' Looking ahead to the festival, Onyebilanma's team is preparing to make the most of the opportunity. They plan to attend workshops, connect with distributors, and showcase what South African filmmakers can achieve. 'We're going to go for all the training, get ourselves equipped because there will be some seminars and workshops for filmmakers,' he says. 'We want to get all the knowledge we can connect as much as we can.' Treasure Hunt, produced by Frances Dlongolo, Kike Adeniyi, and Chim Onyebilanma, will screen on Saturday, 14 June, at 20:115 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

KZN's locally shot Treasure Hunt selected for screening at prestigious US film festival

A locally shot movie, Treasure Hunt has been selected to be screened at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami Beach, Florida. Image: Supplied KwaZulu-Natal film company's debut feature film, Treasure Hunt, has been selected for screening at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami Beach, Florida. KZN's CAP Studios, a pioneering film company based in Embo in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, said it was excited about the recognition. The screening will take place on June 14 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Florida. The film company said the ABFF is a prestigious Academy Award-qualifying festival that celebrates Black talent in film and television. 'The American Black Film Festival is an incredible platform for us to share our story with a new audience,' CAP Studios founder Chim Onyebilanma said. Onyebilanma, who wrote and directed Treasure Hunt, confirmed that he will be attending the movie premiere in Miami, saying, 'My tickets and visa are ready!' Veteran actor Zane Meas on the set of Treasure Hunt which has been selected to be screened at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami Beach, Florida. Image: Supplied He said the selection was testament to the hard work and dedication of their entire team and he mentioned the contribution of Happiness Mpase, the associate producer. "We are proud to be representing South Africa and our community on the global stage.' The film is about an ex-con who finds stolen jewellery—and the criminals who want it back. But beneath the crime story lies a powerful message about choices, redemption, and second chances. The movie was also filmed in the heart of the Valley of a Thousand Hills and the company said the locals offered their talents, homes and cars to make it happen. Veteran actor and broadcaster Zane Meas, who stars in the film, praised its message. 'Treasure Hunt is a movie about making the right choices in life and a movie I believe that people would love,' he said. The production brought together a cast of renowned South African actors including Meas, Moopi Mothibeli, Muzi Mthabela, Trevor Gumbi and Samukele Mkhize. They collaborated with young local talent from Embo, highlighting the rich potential within underrepresented communities. Adding international expertise to the film's production was celebrated cinematographer Isaac Alongi, who served as Director of Photography. The executive producers included Onyebilanma, Frances Dlongolo and Kike Adeniyi. Onyebilanma added that lead actors Moopi Mothibeli and Melissa Mkhize, who hails from the Embo community, are also hoping to join him at the festival, pending finalisation of funding.
