How to get around London without the tube network
Five lines on the Underground network are delayed and part suspended or entirely suspended, while three Overground lines – Mildmay, Suffragette and Weaver – are all suspended.

If you are unsure what buses to take, there are detailed maps dotted around bus stops across the city.
Alternatively, apps like Google Maps and Citymapper will offer up the best ways to get to your destination.
Nearly all of London's bus stops also operate night, so you can make sure that you will get home even if you're delayed several hours this evening.
Walking is another great way to get around the capital without having to go on the Tube.
On sunny days like this, it is a great excuse to get out and stretch the legs after a hard day at work.
While London is obviously too big to explore on foot entirely, it is a great way of getting from one place to another if you don't have to travel far.

Uber boat is often used by tourists as a way to get across London and take a more scenic route to places such as Greenwich, the O2 andTower Bridge.
The Thames Clippers boats run regular services between Embankment, Waterloo (London Eye), Blackfriars, Bankside (Shakespeare's Globe), London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Greenwich, North Greenwich and Woolwich piers.
You can also use pay-as-you-go with your Oyster or contactless bank card or buy tickets from machines at the stops.
If you don't fancy walking, cycling is another great way to get around the city.
The public bike-hire scheme Santander Cycles are an easy way for commuters and tourists to get around the city quickly if you don't want to be stuck in traffic.
Other brands that also have bikes available include Lime Bikes, Dott and Human Forest.
To find out where you can rent a bike, you can visit TfL's website.
Make sure you remember to properly return your rented bikes to a docking station otherwise you could face fines or block pavements for pedestrians, parents with prams and disabled people.
One London council has already threatened to ban the bikes after people routinely left them scattered across pavements in the area.
Black cabs are a great way to get around as drivers have their own specialised knowledge of the capital.
You can tell which cabs are available for hire when the yellow sign above the windshield is lit. Just stick your arm out to signal one to stop for you or head to your nearest taxi rank. More Trending
Make sure that you are standing in a safe area and when flagging a cab down as they won't be able to stop on a yellow line or a red line on the road.
Fares are metered, with the initial charge of £3.80 rising by increments of 20p over distance travelled or time taken.
The outage is understood to have been caused by a power outage in south west London that happened at 2.30pm.
Delays and line suspensions are still ongoing.

The Scottish beach just outside of Edinburgh named 'best in the country'
August is officially here, which means we are in the final stretch of summer. Don't fret, though, as you still have plenty of time to make the most of the season. When the weather is nice, nothing hits quite like a day at the beach. While there is certainly no shortage of fabulous bays in Scotland, the Daily Record's latest Walk of the Week was just named the best in the country. Gullane Beach is a sandy bay in East Lothian, around 20 miles out of Edinburgh. It is one of the most renowned beaches along the East Lothian coast. On Wednesday, July 30, holiday rental portal Holidu analysed Google Maps user data for over 9,500 beaches to reveal the most loved UK beaches for 2025. Gullane topped the list for Scotland with a rating of 4.8 out of five. Also known as Gullane Bents, the bay is family -friendly and is a popular destination for activities such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. If it is a more relaxing day out you are looking for, it is also perfect for sunbathing as you listen to the soothing sounds of the waves. The experts praised Gullane for its magnificent views out over the Firth of Forth and its golden sands. It was also singled out as a top destination for golf lovers, with famous courses such as Muirfield and Archerfield Links just a short walk away. Meanwhile, after you are done soaking in the views on the beach, the town of Gullane offers a variety of popular food and drink venues. Among these is The Bonnie Badger pub and restaurant with rooms, where you can enjoy delicious seafood dishes. Holidu wrote: "Gullane Beach in East Lothian, Scotland, is a true Scottish standout, uniquely blending stunning natural beauty with a world-renowned golfing backdrop. This expansive golden sand beach offers breathtaking panoramic views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh and Fife. "However, what truly sets Gullane apart is its direct adjacency to some of Scotland's most prestigious golf courses like Gullane Golf Club and Muirfield, making it a unique destination where the pristine shoreline meets legendary fairways." The exact amount you save depends on the amount of money you earn. An employee earning £40,000, for example, would pay £2,94 in National Insurance contributions over a year while someone earning £20,000 only has to pay £594. The average weekly wage in the UK is £687, then the average grandparent over 60 stands to save £1,851.20 through NI exemptions. Discounted travel, £1,084 Over 60s can get discounted travel which helps to save on everyday costs. In England, pensioners are given a free bus pass. In Wales and Scotland, there are free bus passes are also given to over 60s. Transport for London also offers residents in the capital an Older Person's Freedom Pass and the 60+ Oyster card, which gives you free travel on any TfL service from Monday to Friday. Since bus prices vary across the UK, so does the amount you stand to save but an annual bus pass in London costs £988. Meanwhile, a senior railcard saves you can average of £96 annually and costs just £30. When combining the railcard and bus pass savings, pensioners could save a massive £1,084. Free eye test, £25 Anyone over the age of 60 is entitled to a free eye test, every two years. All you need to do is book your appointment as normal and tell members of staff you are eligible for a free test. Over 60s can save £25, while ensuring that they have good eye health. Pension credit, £3,900 Pension Credit tops up the income of people on the state pension who need it. You'll only qualify if your income is below a certain threshold. However, for those who claim the help is worth an average £3,900 a year. And it's not just the extra income that comes in handy, those on Pension Credit can then unlock further freebies and discounts. Crucial to claim Pension Credit if you can HUNDREDS of thousands of pensioners are missing out on Pension Credit. The Sun's Assistant Consumer Editor Lana Clements explains why it's imperative to apply for the benefit.. Pension Credit is designed to top up the income of the UK's poorest pensioners. In itself the payment is a vital lifeline for older people with little income. It will take weekly income up to to £218.15 if you're single or joint income to £332.95. Yet, an estimated 800,000 don't claim this support. Not only are they missing on this cash, but far more extra support that is unlocked when claiming Pension Credit. With the winter fuel payment - worth up to £300 now being restricted to pensioners claiming Pension Credit - it's more important than ever to claim the benefit if you can. This is because the BBC is a publicly-owned broadcaster. Most people need to pay but anyone over the age of 75 - who also claims Pension credit - can have the charge waived. This could save you £174.50 a year. Discounted broadband, £142.92 People who claim their Pension Credit can often qualify for cheaper broadband. The cheapest plans available to pensioners cost just £14.99 a month, compared to the huge average cost of £26.90. Over the span of a year, this means you stand to save £142.92. Discounted water bills, £400 Social tariffs are available to those on low incomes to help them save on their water bills. Providers offer different discounted rates, with some giving you money off the regular plan and others offering a lower cost service. Bills under social tariffs for water are often no more than £200 a year, with the average water bill at more than £600, you stand to save £400. Get in touch with your water provider for more information. Free NHS dental treatment, £26.50 Anyone who claims Pension Credit is entitled to free NHS dental care. Make sure to phone your dentist before hand to check whether you are eligible. If you are, you could save £26.50 for a routine check up. Some dental work, such as dentures, cost up to £3.19 though - meaning you could save hundreds. Free passports, £94.50 Passports are offered for free by the Home Office to anyone born before September 2, 1929. Although that means most people who are eligible for the discount are in their late 90s, it still allows Brits the chance to save £94.50. Using the fast track service will still incur a charge though so give it plenty of time if you need to renew. Discounted days out, £24 People of an older age are often able to claim special discounts which can help them save money on days out. Also, you can even save on Interrail passes - which let you travel around Europe for free - by getting 10 per cent off. Also you can get cheap cinema tickets. Empire has special Senior screenings for over-60s every Wednesday morning and tickets cost £4.50. Odeon also holds weekly Silver Cinema screenings for over-60s with ticket prices starting at £3.50. Both cinemas also provide free refreshments too. Plus, Vue cinemas senior screenings are discounted for over 60s and include a cup of tea and a biscuit. Showcase offers senior admission every Monday to any standard film starting before 12pm and it costs £5. You can find your nearest branches using the locator tool on the website. Existing National Trust members aged 60 who have been a member for the last three years or more can get 25% off the price. This means that you'll pay £72 for individual senior annual membership instead of £96 for an adult membership, saving £24.

Free bus travel for over 60s update as calls for London scheme to be extended to rest of England
A huge campaign is being waged to try to get people in England the same concessionary travel as those in London do A proposal has been put forward to extend the free travel system, currently available to all individuals over 60 in London, across the entire country. A significant campaign is underway to provide the same concessionary travel benefits to people in England as those enjoyed by Londoners. At present, the devolved governments in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland offer free bus travel to individuals from the age of 60. However, in England, it's up to local authorities - many of which are grappling with severe funding issues - to provide this service. As a result, most people only receive their free pass at the age of 66. This means that free travel for those aged 60 is only available in a few areas, such as Merseyside and London. In these locations, individuals can travel for free on transport services using an Oyster photocard. Unlike much of the rest of England, London residents enjoy free travel on buses, the Tube, trams, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line (excluding between West Drayton and Reading) and most National Rail services in London. They can travel for free on TfL services anytime Monday to Friday, except between 04:30-09:00, and can travel for free anytime at weekends and on bank holidays. A massive petition calling for free travel for all over 60s in England has just wrapped up on the Parliament website - attracting more than 100,000 signatures. This means MPs should now debate the issue, which could pile additional pressure on the Department for Transport (DfT) to outline its stance and specifically address the concerns raised. A date hasn't been fixed but is expected to be revealed shortly. The petition states: "We call on the Government to extend free bus travel to all people over 60 years old in England outside London. We believe the current situation is unjust and we want equality for everyone over 60. "Currently, people in England who do not live in London are not entitled to free bus travel until they reach the state pension age, which we believe has changed dramatically. As people get older some over 60s drive less and less, therefore we believe we need equality on public transport. It would mean England had the same provision as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland." This week brought fresh developments as Tory Nick Timothy questioned Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander in writing about whether people who benefit from the London free travel scheme could use it elsewhere in the country. This could have major ramifications as any nationwide scheme might lead to the concession being more broadly available. Mr Timothy posed a question to Ms Alexander, asking: "What assessment she has made of the potential implications for her policies of passengers with a London Freedom Pass being able to travel for free in areas where the eligibility for free travel is set at an older age." Simon Lightwood, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, responded that it was up to local authorities to decide whether to allow free travel earlier. He explained: "The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) provides free off-peak bus travel to those with eligible disabilities and those of state pension age, currently 66. In London, the Older Person's Freedom Pass is eligible to all London residents over the age of 66, which is the statutory eligibility for the ENCTS as set out in legislation." He further clarified: "This therefore means that there would be no instance where a passholder of London's Older Person Freedom Pass would be using their pass in an area where the eligibility for free travel is set at a higher age." He added: "Residents who live in a London borough and are aged 60 or over are eligible for the 60+ London Oyster photocard. This concession enables passholders to travel for free on Transport for London (TfL) services and cannot be used to board services outside of London, with the exception of a small number of National Rail services connecting into London. This is an additional concession, funded and delivered at the discretion of TfL."
